Relocating to Mansfield - Help!

Laurasco87 · 07/04/2024 16:20

My partner has been promoted and we are going to relocate so he’s nearer his new office. His job is going to be in Alfreton but I have read not great things about that area. I am open to Mansfield or Derby or surrounding areas but would still need to visit family in both Leeds and Doncaster so not too far south! I am more concerned with a good/safe location than size of house and our budget is around £230,000.

We like rural areas but still want a social life! Currently have no children but that is in our future, and I am a primary teacher so will be looking for a job in that sector wherever we move to.

Can anyone give me any guidance on where to look at moving? It’s so hard doing everything from a distance!

Thanks in advance :)

I'm near Mansfield and it's not good, very run down with little to offer tbh. I'd probably look more towards Derby - Markearon maybe. My preference in that area would probably be Belper but it isn't great for a social life, although there are some decent places to eat.

Skillest · 07/04/2024 16:45

Yeah, urm... not Manfield.

How about Heanor or Smalley? Good secondary school. By choice I wouldn't go anywhere in the area though.

How far is he prepared to commute?

LIZS · 07/04/2024 16:46

Not Mansfield! There are so many better areas in Notts, Derbyshire and Lincolnshire.

Whinge · 07/04/2024 16:56

If you've managed to read some not great things about Alfreton i'm surprised you haven't heard anything negative about Mansfield. There are plenty of other areas to consider. Is your partner willing to commute to work and if so how far?

Longtimelistenerfirsttimecaller · 07/04/2024 17:02

How about going to the other side of Alfreton towards Matlock? Or down to Belper?

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 07/04/2024 17:14

Mansfield is not great moving to Mansfield www.mumsnet.com/Talk/property/4711863-considering-moving-to-mansfield post from last year here

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 07/04/2024 17:18

Sorry, bad link A thread from last year about Mansfield

Onedaylikethi5 · 07/04/2024 17:19

Belper, Matlock and the places in between.

Bobbybobbins · 07/04/2024 17:45

Definitely not Mansfield- personally I'd prefer to live in Alfreton! I'd look at Matlock, Belper, towards Sheffield maybe, Southwell.

TheIcecreamManCometh · 07/04/2024 18:29

Isn't Matlock famous for its heroin users?!
still took the kids last year

Cards on table, I haven't been back in ages but are Chesterfield or Newark any better to live? Mansfield Woodhouse? I went to Chesterfield last Summer and it seemed alright albeit a bit limited. Newark used to have a decent market (but so did Mansfield).
Mansfield was once voted the worst place to live in the UK and its crime rate is still shocking but it is well located to the M1, has some lovely areas to visit nearby (Creswell Crags, Hardwick Hall, Rufford Park, Newstead Abbey, Sherwood Forest), is an easy commute to Alfreton and Sheffield.
My hesitation would be the asbo rate, that it is now tory afaik (it was a labour stronghold for years), maybe a bit gammony (one of the highest Brexit votes in the country) and I wouldn't want to teach there (but I am secondary).

Skillest · 07/04/2024 19:14

If I was going to move to Mansfield, I would go the Newark side - Edwinstowe, Newstead Abbey, that sort if place. It's a bigger commute to Alfreton though.

Having just looked, Alfterton to Edwinstowe is not much different travel time as Alfreton to West Bridgford - where you really want to be.

You have to think about your budget though. £230K won't go very far south of the Trent. But it will buy you a decent sized home in the Mansfield area.

Laurasco87 · 07/04/2024 19:19

Wow, ok thanks guys. I’m guessing not Mansfield then haha. To be honest, I didn’t necessarily mean in the town centre, I figured there must be some surrounding areas that are ok? For instance, I currently live in Bradford and would warn people that the city of Bradford is horrific, but the village I live in on the outskirts is lovely.

We are both willing to travel 30-40 mins but personally I wouldn’t want to be sitting on a motorway for 40 mins!

Somewhere near junction 25 or 26 might be better.
Near to 25 Toton, Stapleford & Sandiacre have ok schools.
Nearer 26 Kimberley or Awsworth.

Yes agree with this

Gladespade · 07/04/2024 19:34

Definitely not Mansfield. Belper could be a good bet, nice town, with a good community feel, or (and I know many won’t agree) I like Chesterfield. The area to the west around Brampton is the best. You could definitely get a house for your budget and you’re really close to the Peak District and beautiful countryside.

dastidlydaschel · 07/04/2024 19:35

Closer to alfreton - Kimberley, giltbrook, newthorpe are ok and within your budget

Ilovemyshed · 07/04/2024 19:37

I would live in Bakewell 100%

Ilovemyshed · 07/04/2024 19:40

Oh sorry just seen your budget. Maybe Matlock / Darley Dale/ west Chesterfield then. Bakewell is too expensive.

Viewfrommyhouse · 07/04/2024 19:43

Absolute shithole, please don't.

LumiK · 07/04/2024 19:43

I’d definitely suggest Matlock, used to teach there, the school was lovely and I liked the town. Never saw any heroin users as mentioned further up!

You'll get bugger all worth looking at for £230k in Southwell.
