Relocating to Mansfield - Help!

Laurasco87 · 07/04/2024 16:20

My partner has been promoted and we are going to relocate so he’s nearer his new office. His job is going to be in Alfreton but I have read not great things about that area. I am open to Mansfield or Derby or surrounding areas but would still need to visit family in both Leeds and Doncaster so not too far south! I am more concerned with a good/safe location than size of house and our budget is around £230,000.

We like rural areas but still want a social life! Currently have no children but that is in our future, and I am a primary teacher so will be looking for a job in that sector wherever we move to.

Can anyone give me any guidance on where to look at moving? It’s so hard doing everything from a distance!

Thanks in advance :)

Heanor is lovely. Schools are good. Easy access to the Motorway too.

Toddlerteaplease · 07/04/2024 19:48

Southwell is along way in the other direction.

Isn't Matlock famous for its heroin users?!
still took the kids last year

Literally never heard or seen any evidence of this??

StMarieforme · 07/04/2024 19:50

Belper or Matlock on £230k?

savoycabbage · 07/04/2024 19:50

You will easily get a teaching job so that's a bonus.

I'd rather live in Alfreton than Mansfield. There's actually some perfectly nice parts. There is also a lovely infant school. I think associated junior school is good too but I've never been to it (I'm a supply teacher).

TheIcecreamManCometh · 07/04/2024 19:51

That was me - I didn't see a visible issue when I went there last Summer - I just know there used to be heavy addiction there as I knew someone in Probation Service.
That said, where I live now, there's always a small queue outside the chemist on a Friday waiting to pick up their methadone.
It's not on my direct doorstep (although it's probably about 5 minutes away!) so doesn't affect me.
Similarly, I could go back and live in Mansfield and not be anxious particularly - the two houses I posted upthread are good for the money and the areas I'd have checked out but not r.a.f as far as I can remember Wink

We liked Matlock and Bakewell as days out.
Abraham Heights is ker-ching now, mind.

There's some great houses in Broadmeadows in Alfreton and there is an other estate nearby on the other side of Birchwood lane that's lovely too.

I can't believe nobody has suggested West Bridgford yet.

Matlock and Belper are absolutely lovely but they are very expensive.

QualityDog · 07/04/2024 20:00

Sorry I missed your budget but I still recommend that area.

Mansfield district gets by far the most operation Encompass notification to schools than all other Nottinghamshire Districts.

For those unaware Operation Encompass are emails sent to school when police attend an incident of domestic violence involving the parent/carer of a child.

So, Manfield has far more children affected by domestic abuse than all of the rest of Nottinghamshire. Not just 'a but more' either. Mansfield District have far and away the highest numbers, by a long way.

I think that explains a lot about the types on communities in the area.

You'll get nothing nice there for £230k either, that's why.

I would live in Bakewell 100%

This.

I know! That's what I meant.

These bungalows are good for young couples. This one needs a renovation but there are good solid little houses. This one has quite a view.

dastidlydaschel · 07/04/2024 20:10

West Bridgford would be a painful daily journey to alfreton through traffic.
Plus you're not buying anything there for OP's budget. Unless you can afford one of the detached with a decent size drive (which are minimum of £500k) parking in WB is a pain.
I lived in WB when I was a student and personally think it's very overrated. It's very try hard yummy mummy and the night life is desperate divorcees generally.

Ilovemyshed · 07/04/2024 19:37

I would live in Bakewell 100%

Lovely place but horrendously busy at weekends, bank holidays, market day and the summer.
No train links either.

MissAtomicBomb1 · 07/04/2024 21:33

Would also recommend Belper. Also some of the outlying suburbs and villages: Allestree, Duffield (££ though) Little Eaton, Holbrook, five lamps area of Derby, all are a quick hop onto the A38 and would be less than 30 mins to Alfreton in rush hour.

fantaoranges · 07/04/2024 21:40

How about Swanwick (pronounced ("Swannick") Close to Alfreton and a good little place.

Patbutcherghosts · 07/04/2024 21:43

Mansfield is fine, lived here for over 20 years. Berry Hill or High Oakham are the places to be and tbh I’ve found everyone really friendly. ( I remember work colleagues faces when I said I was moving to Mansfield and many tried to put me off with negative comments -but I still went 😃and I now have children who are thriving at school)

CalmConfident · 07/04/2024 21:47

Alfreton, I’d stay Derbyshire side rather than Mansfield way!

Starlightstarbright3 · 07/04/2024 21:49

Belper is lovely but quite pricey just a little out Kilburn , smaller cheaper , Duffield , all tree are nice but quite expensive too . All close to A38.

FloofCloud · 07/04/2024 21:56

Matlock!
The other places around there aren't great TBH but Matlock is lovely! Or Critch

South Wingfield is a lovely village with a lovely pub, or surrounding, Crich, Holloway, Tansley, Ashover parish - if you want to be in Matlock direction. Still only a short commute to Alfreton.

If I was going to move to Mansfield, I would go the Newark side - Edwinstowe, Newstead Abbey, that sort if place. It's a bigger commute to Alfreton though.

Having just looked, Alfterton to Edwinstowe is not much different travel time as Alfreton to West Bridgford - where you really want to be.

You have to think about your budget though. £230K won't go very far south of the Trent. But it will buy you a decent sized home in the Mansfield area.

Edited

You won’t get a house in Newstead abbey for that budget. There are only about 40 properties in Newstead abbey and with the exception of a couple of converted stable type properties at about half a million most are well over £1.5m
