And the weird sofa facing the corner needs to go! Looks like a sofa equivalent of the naughty step

senua · 01/03/2024 18:54

Nobody has talked about the dumb waiter yet. Imagine being asleep in the master bedroom and somebody sets that off, rumbling up and down!
Where is the laundry done?

eacapade1982 · 01/03/2024 18:54

What the… I was expecting a shit hole but it is a lovely house! I’d get rid of the artificial grass and over time inject more colour into the decor but in general anyone who gets to live there is very lucky.

I was just about to mention the dumb waiter! After scrutinising the floor plan (I need to get a life) it travels from the kitchen to the garage. Why? Confused Who is living in the garage to receive whatever is in the dumb waiter??

Presumably it's so that you can offload the shopping from the car in the garage up to the kitchen.
And there's another thing: the master bedroom is over the garage, which usually makes a room cold. I hope that they really have got that sorted with their whizz-bang energy-efficiency.

Ah yes that makes sense now!

titchy · 01/03/2024 19:45

Make it a proper Huff Haus style house. Glass, metal. Landscaped garden. Could be lovely!

housethatbuiltme · 01/03/2024 19:59

When people say the 'naughty' sofa do they mean the love seat in the bedroom pointed towards the tv?

I tend to have my chairs face the TV too.

Shadowonasun · 01/03/2024 20:10

I really like the exterior. Heinous old-fashioned interior, but that can be changed. Absolutely hate gardens, gardening, plants, birds and all that shit, so the starkness/fake grass would be a plus for me.

nfkl · 01/03/2024 20:22

Would change a lot of things because they re not my taste (all the wood and fittings, front, tarmac, fake grass, have stairs from the balcony to the garden)
I m also not convinced by the living room layout, I would move the kitchen to the lounge, with a long counter sideways to face the main area.
The small garden could still be a dealbreaker, but the layout makes the most of the superb views, and this house could look truly magnificent

CoolShoeshine · 01/03/2024 20:28

Totally shocked this house is so decisive- I’m team love it!
Not much to do inside imo- just make it your own and a tad more homely. The proportions and light are fantastic. Yes to toning down or removing the wood but that’s not especially urgent.
Outside is quite incongruous with the beautiful setting, getting rid of the fake lawn would be a quick win, followed by the raised area with the shed. All you really need is a nice patio running the width of the property plus some grass and then let the field view be the main event.
the balcony is new looking and practical, I’d keep it as it will be a wonderful place to place lovely furniture and sit and enjoy the view. If you replace with wood it will require more maintenance.
Not sure about the front elevation though - perhaps paint the garage door, get a statement front door and some striking plants in pots and forget about it?

Wingsnfly · 01/03/2024 20:50

The house is lovely. Very light. I like the wood. The furniture is too bland though. It just needs a designer's touch, plants and proper grass in the garden.

TheNinthLock · 01/03/2024 22:02

DrSpartacular · 01/03/2024 15:33

It was built in 2013!

@CrispsnDips It's a bit too pastiche tbh, and will never look 'pretty'. But if it works for you then go for it, the views are fab.

2013? Crikey, what were they thinking? It’s quite a departure from 2013 styles.
in any case, remove plastic grass and add plants as a bare minimum!
I’d still happily live there though.

I see that the RM entry says that it was listed on 01/02/2024. I had a quick look at Google Streetview to see if it looks equally awful on there and noticed that it was also for sale then with a different Estate Agent - back in April 2023. In fact, you can look on the listing to see 'property sale history' and it has never sold to date.
If it's going to be your forever house then maybe you could make it work but otherwise you can tell (from the above and from comments on here) that you would have trouble selling it on.

@senua can buyers see how many times a house has been listed and not sold?
I've got my house for sale but I've listed it 3 times before and not accepted offers or sold because of various (legit) reasons.

Does that mean everyone's going to think my house is a turkey? (Sorry for the thread hijack)

Re this house, you need to go full on

www.themodernhouse.com

with it. The furniture does not match the house and I assume the EAs have gone nuts with the fishbowl lens because the spaces look very out of proportion. Was it a self-build or did an architect design it? If the latter can you look at other examples of their work and draw inspiration?

Neverpostagain · 01/03/2024 23:30

I love it! It's not a pretty house and never will be, so don't go down that road, but it's stylish and I'd want to dress the inside in keeping with the outside.

AndThatWasNY · 01/03/2024 23:43

AstroTurf is so fucking ugly!

Bringtheweatherwithyou · 02/03/2024 00:01

I love it!

The outside needs to be improved - just remove the steps leading to the astro turf and the turf itself, sow some grass and surround it with trees in the front to make it more private and mature looking. Not sure if its possible to increase the wall height and put it in large wooden gate to enclose it?

Inside is amazing. The size of the rooms!

If more than three people are going to move in, I'd probably look at some sort of slatted wooden screen to close off the sitting room/tv area a bit......open plan looks lovely but may not be very practical if everyone can hear everything in the same space.

CrispsnDips · 02/03/2024 06:59

Thank you so much for all the interesting (and sometimes hilarious) replies;
after loads of thought and your contributions, I would:

. demolish the bricks/steps going up to the front door

. create a new front door where the gym/storage area is
(thus creating a nice hallway)

. add a window where the original door is

. re-design the garden by removing shed, raised area and fake grass

. tone down the orange pine

. plant shrubs, trees at the front and gravel the driveway

. render the front, maybe an ash grey

This house was on the market for, I think, £750,000 (£125,000 more!!) last year and did not sell. The owners have now re-listed but it’s still hanging around a bit compared to other properties.

The location is wonderful with the River Nene nearby

Thanks again ☺️

So much potential! And the surrounds and view are fantastic!

no idea on the area, but looks like a decent price for a decent house! Heaps I’d do to it, first stop whitewash pine and dig up plastic garden…

your ideas sound fab!

goingslightlyinsane · 02/03/2024 07:47

I think if the house was white it would look nice.
I would get the whole thing rendered in white. Job done.

Nothingbuttheglory · 02/03/2024 08:16

Looks like bringing in the shopping from the supermarket would be an absolute pita.

Ginmonkeyagain · 02/03/2024 08:22

It looks very institutional. Deal with the orange wood and sort out the fugly garden.

Pacifybull · 02/03/2024 08:34

I like the general look of the house, but get rid of the Astroturf and it needs more plants, inside and out. The furniture is wrong. Main problems that would put people off are the upside down layout and the fact there’s no bath.

Why? That’s why there’s the dumb waiter from the garage to the kitchen.

River near by? Check your flood risk very very carefully. https://flood-map-for-planning.service.gov.uk/

I like it, it has huge potential. De orange the wood, furniture which doesn't clash and amazing views.
