I don’t think it was a house designed to be “pretty” , which is fine , it’s quite hotel like inside which will appeal to some and not others . I would have to get rid of that fake grass , but equally maybe it would appeal to others that like the more sterile look.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 01/03/2024 16:04

Wow. If I wanted to live there, I would be banging on their door with my chequebook.

samsums · 01/03/2024 16:06

You ask How can this house look prettier?

Knock it down and build a house more in keeping with the local area?

I dont think there is much you can do. To me it looks like a ski chalet or a university hall of residence built in the 1970s eitherway its totally out of place in an English rural village. It also looks uncared for with a stark industrial hard wood look and not at all homely. It also doesnt have rooms that can be used - its all so open plan there is nowhere cosy to sit and watch the tele. And the garden is horrible with nothing there

I'm sure there probably is a buyer for it somewhere but if I was in a family looking for a house in the local area why would I choose that when I could buy a four bedroom house with established garden in the same village for £50,000 less.

The horrible balcony would have to go. The garage needs plastering. All that concrete/tarmac outside would have to go. Too much glass - nice for light but it'd be cold/hot. The chrome and glass banister doesn't go with the natural wood. I don't know tbh it looks horrendous to me, a really odd mixture of styles. Looks like a massive house with open plan (ugh) on a tiny plot largely covered in concrete and fake grass.

Couldn't disagree more... you just said to change all the good and unique bits.

Skidoddle · 01/03/2024 16:07

The upside down floor plan would be a nightmare with kids. The artificial grass is hideous and the garden is really small. You could easily decorate out any other issues.

TempleOfBloom · 01/03/2024 16:07

It’s not meant to look ‘pretty’.

It’s not the best example of its style but If you don’t like its lines and structure buy something else.

BigWillyLittleTodger · 01/03/2024 16:07

You can never make that house look pretty, you could make it look stylish, contemporary, striking even but never pretty.

pizzaHeart · 01/03/2024 16:08

I would want proper grass and some plants/ shrubs maybe some greenery at the balcony. However I wouldn’t be put off by lack of plants. it’s minor.
It very much depends on what available in the area. Are there other detached houses of this size and in this price range? Is this garden average size or less than average? What kind of road is next to it?
Are you selling it OP? It’s pretty enough already. It looks nice and airy and spacious, can’t comment on pricing though.

NashvilleQueen · 01/03/2024 16:09

I really like it!

housethatbuiltme · 01/03/2024 16:10

Love the windows and balcony.

I agree the astroturf looks bad though, I'm not even against astroturf in general but it isn't done very well so looks cheap and bad. I'm also not sure what the random patch of gravel is... it looks like walkway then gravel then grass.

I personally hate kitchens in the living space but thats me, 'open plan' rules out houses for me though.

I feel this house is missing a sauna, definitely needs a sauna not a gym to capture that full blown 70s glam vibe lol.

ThePoshUns · 01/03/2024 16:10

Omg I love this style of house! So light and airy and just a bit different.
I'd keep the wooden ceilings for sure.
Looks very Scandinavian, I'd be furnishing in the scandi style.
It's gorgeous, I'm very envious.

BigWillyLittleTodger · 01/03/2024 16:10

If it was my house I would go all out James Bond villains lair.

senua · 01/03/2024 16:14

I see that the RM entry says that it was listed on 01/02/2024. I had a quick look at Google Streetview to see if it looks equally awful on there and noticed that it was also for sale then with a different Estate Agent - back in April 2023. In fact, you can look on the listing to see 'property sale history' and it has never sold to date.
If it's going to be your forever house then maybe you could make it work but otherwise you can tell (from the above and from comments on here) that you would have trouble selling it on.

ThePoshUns · 01/03/2024 16:15

Didn't notice the astroturf that would have to go.
The current furniture is very dated, a trip to ikea and you could kit it out lovely!

Seeingadistance · 01/03/2024 16:19

Apart from the fake grass, I love it!

Stormbornform · 01/03/2024 16:19

I think it's a love it or hate it house. Keeping it plain probably best. Maybe remove the wooden furniture if trying to sell. It's very wood heavy which is a bit claustrophobic.

WashableVelvet · 01/03/2024 16:19

Are you selling it or buying it?

Selling - paint or tone down a bit but not all of the orange pine. Put a couple of massive planters with the biggest bay trees or similar that you can find either side of the front door to balance the top heavy look and introduce a tiny bit of nature.

Buying - get rid of all the astroturf but put a veranda type thing outside the ground floor with a framework, put in shrubs, get rid of the hot tub cement thing (?), paint the red shed something less glaring, and plant a huge climbing rose like Madame Alfred Carriere to go right over the roof.

TheRaptures · 01/03/2024 16:22

The odd thing is that it was built in 2013, when that orangey pine had long passed its moment. The blurb says it’s ’architect-designed’, but the orange pine (which is apparently oak?) says ‘I have no taste’. The good thing about this is that you can do what you want, which would, for me, staining over the orange wood to mute the colour - with that much light, you could choose really bold wall colours. The glass balcony is a horror, as is the astroturf, but if you replaced the windows and bought really beautiful furniture, you could make this really beautiful. Apart from it being crammed onto a tiny plot compared to its size, but that won’t bother some people.

Part of why it looks so awful in the photos is the sad furniture, which makes the house look naff. They’d have done better to hire some Scandi pieces or leave it empty.

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 01/03/2024 16:23

I love that balcony! I'd pull down that wooden ceiling, plaster it and paint it.
I'd paint all the stained wood such as door frames, wardrobe doors, replace the wood look kitchen cupboard doors
Lots of pots on the balcony, more plants in the garden.

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 01/03/2024 16:24

I'd also put a new surface on the balcony and rip up the plastic lawn and put a real one down

StrongandNorthern · 01/03/2024 16:26

Actually I love it!!
Location looks brilliant.
Potential, potential, potential .....!
It's the 'front' (road facing) which needs sorting ...
wood cladding?? with wooden balcony?
Well chosen, soft colour for garage door ...
Soften the 'boxiness' with planting.
It could look amazing.

JustWhatWeDontNeed · 01/03/2024 16:26

I don't like it all, for numerous reasons.

The house across the road in one of the photos looks lovely though. But probably twice the price.

I don't like the layout and would expect a better kitchen in terms of appliances etc given the amount of space there seems to be. The fake grass is awful. Too much wood panelling. It looks like a Swedish style holiday chalet.

Flin · 01/03/2024 16:28

I never realised so many people were anti-balcony. I think the balcony is great.

For me the fake grass would have to go. I love how light the house is though.

PrimalLass · 01/03/2024 16:30

Also, the actual front on the street needs work.

I'd put a wall between the living space and kitchen.

Change the garage into another bedroom. Put a smaller brick garage in the front drive.

External steps from the balcony to the garden.

Get curtains and blinds as it's so bright it's making me stressed.

Bjorkdidit · 01/03/2024 16:30

I also like the balcony. Painting over some of the orange pine, changing the upholstered furniture to something more modern and adding some plants and artwork would transform it, but that would obviously be something for the buyer to do to their taste.

I don't particularly like plastic grass, but I could easily tolerate it as an alternative to having to do gardening.
