My ugly glittery bathrooms

New house has bathrooms that are decorated like this. I've never seen anything like this before! All of the walls are glittery plastic type, I don't know what it's called.

The house is only 7 years old and survey showed no damp or anything so that's good, I just need to get used to the shiny look of it!

Wondering if it's easy to keep clean/damp free.

(When I can afford it I want to change the bath to a shower, as none of us bath!)

You need to add a disco ball to complete the look

anon0007 · 08/10/2023 16:45

Bathrooms 10/15 years ago had this put in.

It's wet wall.

Calmdown14 · 08/10/2023 19:00

It's wet wall and is very easy to clean but that is quite full on.

You could probably tone it down a bit with some plants or accessories so it is less hard looking. It's definitely in need of some softness to tone down the cold feeling.

Is it just lino on the floor? Perhaps changing this to something warmer would help.

Booklover40 · 08/10/2023 19:02

Its like the stuff they use in caravans - it’s used because it’s a lot cheaper than tiling! I would imagine as a plus it’s very easy to keep clean.

Moodwill · 08/10/2023 19:07

Wet wall. Good to know the name! It really is just so so ugly.

Thinking of hanging fake plants everywhere to break it up.

Other bathroom is the same!

It's not that bad. A bit pinky in the picture you've taken. No grout so it will probably last and last.

My bathroom had a neo classical border with an otherwise neutral tile. I ended up with it for 17 years!

declutteringmymind · 08/10/2023 19:20

The lights are a bit bright can you adjust them to reduce the sparkle?

Fizzadora · 08/10/2023 19:27

You've got a shiny plastic roof too.
If it were mine I would replace the bath side and end panels with something more natural (Matt varnished or chalk painted wood probably in a soft pale green or blue) and hang a light wood slim Venetian blind at the window - I am on my second one from IKEA in 25 years and have my shower in exactly the same position as you. It rarely gets splashed.

ActDottie · 08/10/2023 19:39

I imagine it’s practical as you don’t have to clean each tile so easier to clean… but that’s where the advantages stop… it doesn’t look great and wouldn’t blame you if you prioritised a new bathroom above other things in the house.

Don't do that! Like lipstick on a pig. Fake plants always look awful.

Moodwill · 08/10/2023 19:43

We can't change them for a long while yet as the move has skinted us, but I'm trying to embrace them!

It's not that bad, a bit bland or something (despite all the glitter!) but I've viewed a lot of houses to buy over the summer and I've seen plenty of ugly grotty bathrooms. This is very clean and presentable at least.

I'd try adding some colour....frame prints on the walls, vase of flowers on the window etc.

LadyWithLapdog · 08/10/2023 19:59

It just needs a bit of colour. The usual mess from shampoo bottles, shower gels and all the rest will see to that.

Hibiscrubbed · 08/10/2023 20:14

Can’t you use real plants?

LolSpinner · 08/10/2023 20:28

I think it's livable with. I wouldn't use fake plants. I'd keep it tidy and embrace the sparkles. You can't disguise it.

WineWithAView · 08/10/2023 22:02

Ah the bathroom in our new-ish (to us) house has exactly the same walls. We call it the disco bathroom. 😄

Unfortunately, it looks like it'll last forever...

TheYearOfSmallThings · 08/10/2023 22:08

I quite like it Blush

GreatShaker · 08/10/2023 22:12

My parents have this because it’s ‘easy to clean’. Theirs is an imitation marble effect so it could be worse.

Beamur · 08/10/2023 22:15

I quite like it too. Either go for it with really bright jewel coloured towels etc or tone it down with neutral accessories.

Nanalisa60 · 08/10/2023 22:17

It’s really easy to keep clean !!

Lavenderosa · 08/10/2023 22:22

I couldn't live with that. I'd sand it, prime it with acrylic primer and then paint it with a good quality bathroom paint. I'd try it first on the bath panel.

JohnNolan · 08/10/2023 22:26

I really like it!!

JennyForeigner · 08/10/2023 22:43

It's the silver strips that do it. I'm with a pp, when you have the cash see if it can be painted to something basic. I used chalkpaint on similar stuff in a caravan once and it was fine.

I don't know how you disguise the strips though!

Gnomegnomegnome · 08/10/2023 22:47

Everything is so close together! Can you brush your teeth while having a wee?

m I would imagine that it’s easy to clean?

Nortam · 08/10/2023 23:05

Honestly I really don't think it's that bad. Id rather have this bathroom than the one we are buying which has creepy looking dolphins on random tiles. It's also absolutely grotty, old and desperately needs replacing (which we can't afford for a while)

I think with your own accessories and a few cheap changes you could make it less noticeably sparkly. You could change the bath panel and put up a shelf with plants and maybe a framed print on the wall.
