My ugly glittery bathrooms

New house has bathrooms that are decorated like this. I've never seen anything like this before! All of the walls are glittery plastic type, I don't know what it's called.

The house is only 7 years old and survey showed no damp or anything so that's good, I just need to get used to the shiny look of it!

Wondering if it's easy to keep clean/damp free.

(When I can afford it I want to change the bath to a shower, as none of us bath!)

It's .... not great. But at least it is clean and functional, you'll get used to it.

Our bathroom was an eighties horror with those awful veiny marble print tiles, a textured scroll pattern dado rail , elaborate faux Victoriana taps and shower head and fake slate floor tiles.

After a few years of saving we now have a lovely thirties style bathroom with clean lines, white metro tiles, a border of cobalt blue finger and dado tiles and a black and white chequerboard tile floor. Which matches the 1930s flat it is in.

It does look a bit cheap and institutional. The plumbers merchant we bought our pipes and sanitary ware from tried to persuade us to have a wet wall. I was dubious and it looks like I was right to be! (Even though floor to ceiling metro tiles involves A LOT of grout cleaning 🫣)

So glad some of you like it, and yes it could be worse! (dolphins on tiles!)

I hope they'll grow on me... and yes it's all squished in. Both bathrooms are identical. I can't wait til we have enough saved up to rip out at least one bath

Also, those of you suggesting real plants- any ideas which will grow in there without any light? (Except through the tiny window)

Hmmm ….I love wet wall, had a pale grey ( not sparkly ) shower enclosure in the last house, and I’ ve just put a turquoise sparkle in the shower enclosure here! Not all over everything though, we have real wood worktops and kept the tiling on three walls ( only because I couldn’t be doing with the mess of taking them off though.

I agree that a mirror or even better a colourful picture over the loo would break up the effect, be careful how you put it up, you need a small drill and go gently through the panel to get into the wall behind. you might be able to put a transfer onto the panels ? I had some seaweed and fish on a panel once .

I don’t know where you put plants in this room, there doesn’t seem to be any ledges, or indeed room to swing a towel without knocking them over

on the plus side, it will be really easy to keep clean!

I think you need to embrace it.
Find a Too Glam To Give A Dam picture and hang it up plus lots of lovely girly prints.
Pink towels and I would go for little fake plants to give it some umph!

I like it, I love sparkles ✨

8misskitty8 · 11/10/2023 19:30

I quite like it. Fairly neutral so any towel colour will go. Once you have done accessories it will be fine.

We had far worse, Victorian style bathroom suite with gold taps, navy and yellow square tiles with a square flower border tile. Hideous.
House was only about 20 years old when we bought it and that bathroom wasn’t the original one ! Previous owners had actually chosen to put that in !
Rest of the house was all dark and questionable decor choices.

I thought it was called mermaid board 🤣
But I haven’t got it my bathroom, I’ve put it in my dog room as it’s cheap & easy to wipe down.

SharonTheHappySquirrel · 11/10/2023 21:40

I think the silver joining strips make it look a lot worse. We have wetwall in our bathroom, it’s a Matt effect white/grey concrete style so not as in your face. We have white joining strips, could you possibly change them out? Ours was in the house already, but we aren’t in a rush to change it, it’s super easy to clean, no grout to go orange! Just wipe down

Loubelle70 · 11/10/2023 21:46

Oh dear....i like it 😂. Honestly i do. I love sparkly though. I had these in grey in my bathroom. They're only panels. Saved tiling. Easy to clean with a mop. So much easier than tiles with grout.
I did have couple plants in bathroom though to break it up

Moodwill · 12/10/2023 15:41

Yes I've got to say I love that there's no grout to turn grimy!

I agree, it's the silver strips. Hmmm. What can I do to them?

I generally like glittery things. I also like that it'll be a breeze to keep them both clean. What I don't like the most is how the toilet is squished up against the bath wall, totally annoying.

Think I might get quotes to rip the bath out and make it into a shower asap!
