Where to move Yorkshire area

Cluckycluck · 11/08/2023 20:42

I'm looking to move to somewhere in the Yorkshire area. Currently in N.Essex but I'm looking for a complete change.

I don't have any clue about any areas of Yorkshire and I'm open to anywhere. I want to be rural or based on the outskirts of a village and I need to be near good independent schools. I don't need to be near to trains or good public transport infrastructure.

All suggestions about a nice area welcome!

Yorkshire is huge.
Could you be more specific in your requirements?
I can't advise about independent schools as DD went to good state schools.

ShiteRider · 11/08/2023 20:52

Also, what’s your budget and what sort of thing are you looking for

Hoppinggreen · 11/08/2023 20:54

its a very big county.
Do you want city, coast, countryside?
Budget?
Age of child?

Cluckycluck · 11/08/2023 21:01

Definitely countryside
Child is 7
Max budget is 800k but would like to spend less
Ideally I would like a min of half an acre of land

Those are the main real requirements. I don't need to be near public transport and as I already live rurally I'm used to driving everywhere.

This is pretty much a post divorce I want a life change for both me and DD and to find a nice area that is new to us to make our own.

West Yorkshire- slaithwaite or Marsden or North Leeds
North Yorkshire - Harrogate
South Yorkshire- dunno

PointeShoesandTutus · 11/08/2023 21:14

In a lot of the nice bits of Yorkshire it's a myth that you can get acres for buttons. £800k might not get you as much as you think.

If you're happy to be an hour or so drive from any big town or city then you'll get more for your money, but then usually you're further from Indy schools.

You'd get a decent house with a biggish garden for £800k in Birstwith near Harrogate, which has Belmont Grosvenor prep nearby.

Giggleswick also has a decent Indy school but you might struggle to get something with decent land for that price.

Lower Wensleydale is lovely. Loads of super villages along the Bedale to Leyburn road (A684) and convenient for the A1. Several private schools in the area with buses from the villages. My house is for sale but we don't have the land Confused

YorkshireTeaCup · 11/08/2023 21:42

Consider the villages north of York. Lots of good indies around, although if you end up thinking about schools in York itself, have a look at the journey in for DD so you don't end up sat in loads of traffic each day.

UltramarineViolet · 11/08/2023 21:47

Vale of York would be a good shout. Stamford Bridge/ Pocklington area.

Cluckycluck · 11/08/2023 21:57

@FatCatatPaddingtonStation That is exactly the sort of thing I am after. I don't need that many bedrooms but that does look amazing.

@PointeShoesandTutus I'm not after masses of land. I have hens and cockerels so I need some space for them and for them not to cause an issue with neighbours. I realise not everyone enjoys being woken by crowing at the crack of dawn by several cocks! I guess land is less of an issue but a large garden somewhere that is isolated enough that I won't piss off any neighbours.

Thanks all I will look into the areas suggested.

The villages around Harrogate and out to York are nice but not cheap. For better value, head south of York towards Selby.

Head north to the Dales and is more remote but will get good value for a lovely environment.

The east coast is very isolated and some (incredibly) very deprived areas

Hoppinggreen · 12/08/2023 08:23

Ilkley is nice

Mbop · 12/08/2023 08:53

Have a look at DL11 postcode.

Mbop · 12/08/2023 09:03

Or DL10

This is a great village, easy access to A1.

Mbop · 12/08/2023 09:08

This is a lovely village too.

DL10 is less rural than DL11 but if these areas appeal ask me anything as I've lived in several villages in both postcode areas.

Personally, I would see public transport as a big plus. Within 5 years your Dc will appreciate the chance to get to school independently, and as terms approach, be out and about seeing friends. Fine if you are Ok being MumTaxi but they appreciate independence and it is good for them (IMO) (I grew up rurally. My nieces and nephews were pot bound by being reliant on lifts, compared to my Dc who grew up in a more connected environment)

10 mins walk from a lovely small town with lots going on but very rural and large gardens. Outstanding local state school and direct bus route to the nearest independent schools in Wakefield.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 12/08/2023 09:51

Yorkshire is 4 very large counties!

Based on your initial criteria though, look at the villages around Penistone/Denby Dale/Holmfirth - good state schools all the way through. Also Marsden/Meltham, but secondary education catchment can be shaky. One sought after school, one less so. Bit all those are rural with access to towns and villages, and not massively far from cities like Sheffield.and Manchester should you need their amenities..

peebles32 · 12/08/2023 09:53

Otley or Skipton!

Cluckycluck · 12/08/2023 09:58

Thanks for all recommendations!

I have no public transport where I am and grew up without any so it really isn't something I am bothered by

What is Hebden Bridge like? I've spotted something lovely on RM there.

Sorry, independent schools ftom HD8 (Denby Dale) area - Silcoates, QEGS, Wakefield Girls all about 30 mins away. There is a school bus I think, but the people we k is with kids there don't use it (waiting list?), but also there is a manageable public bus.

Wakefield Independent School at Nostell too. I know nothing about this school, other than it's in a lovely setting!

There's also Huddersfield Grammar and The Mount, both a bit further away (in driving time if not distance) in N Huddersfield

Very prone to flooding (3 major incidents since 2012. I'm not scaremongering, I work in flood risk management in W Yorks), so choose property carefully. New flood defences on the Calder though,

It's a sweet little town with lots of liberal, arty /music/ yoga type stuff going on and many, many cyclists!

Hipperholme Grammar (independent) is in the area, a couple of colleagues went there, other send their dc there, I believe it is quite well respected.

ZebraD · 12/08/2023 10:15

Woodlesford…oulton…nice area with close proximity to Leeds itself and Wakefield, pontefract, castleford. Close to motorways and just a lovely place to live.
where is Essex you coming from?

Gherkingreen · 12/08/2023 10:18

Harrogate, Ripon, Northallerton all lovely. Skipton too, or around York would be my suggestions. Beautiful areas, amazing countryside, nice towns, not sure about schools but am sure there are some good private and state options.
