Where to move Yorkshire area

Cluckycluck · 11/08/2023 20:42

I'm looking to move to somewhere in the Yorkshire area. Currently in N.Essex but I'm looking for a complete change.

I don't have any clue about any areas of Yorkshire and I'm open to anywhere. I want to be rural or based on the outskirts of a village and I need to be near good independent schools. I don't need to be near to trains or good public transport infrastructure.

All suggestions about a nice area welcome!

Lancashire 😂

I am a N Yorkshire gal, lovely to see my home town recommended on here! North Yorks is truly beautiful and with your budget you'll have no problem finding a lovely house! Lots of great private schools around here too.
If you need any help shout!

Cluckycluck · 14/08/2023 07:06

@saraclara Yes, that might be so but if I stay where we are now she wouldn't have the public transport option either unless I drove her to a bus stop or train station. Currently to get into the main village is a 20 min walk and there are no amenities at all. To walk to the closest shop is a good 1hr20min round trip.

Hebden Bridge and Todmorden are lovely places to live however the winters can be very bleak. I have friends from down south who live there now who really struggle in the winter. It’s relentless weather and cold dark days for months. Do not underestimate the microclimate on top of the moors. They’re absolutely stunning but in the depths of January it can feel like winter never ends.

boobot1 · 14/08/2023 07:26

Knaresbrough is a lovely little town

Charlotteowensdodgydad · 14/08/2023 13:57

‘Yorkshire is where my heart is’ How do you know if you’ve never lived there ? Visiting as a tourist is very different because you’re only visiting the naice desirable areas.

Cluckycluck · 14/08/2023 14:17

@Charlotteowensdodgydad I'm unsure who you are quoting with the 'Yorkshire is where my heart is' bit as I've never said that.

I'm aware the tourist areas aren't a representation of what it is like to live there, which is why I have asked for advice and everyone has been super helpful.

I really appreciate everyone's advice. I've even saved some properties in areas that appear to have more public transport.

In five year's time we'll be saying that about a LOT of places. In Lancashire, since the beginning of July, we've had approximately 6 days out of, what, 75 ish, that have had no rain.

We were here last summer and it was nothing like this. Talk about bleak. I didn't expect to get S.A.D. in the middle of the bloomin' summertime. At least on the Moors you have the absolutely beautiful wilderness to look at when you're miserable.

Appreciate you looking out for me, but that's far from the truth. We've spent a great deal of time there, in the nicest parts and some of the bleaker parts. We've spent 1.5 hours trying to get from A to B when google tells you it will be 30 minutes. We've seen the sadness of locals struggling to keep their businesses afloat, village shops and post offices closing, schools closing. We have very good friends there who have us very, very well informed about all the good, the bad and the ugly. We know about floods. We know about being snowed in and just how bad it can get. We know about power cuts. We know about completely inflexible local councils. We know about terrible internet, phone signals, oil, and almost nobody caring about infrastructure.

We've also spent the last two years living in the arse end of nowhere in houses in the country that pose many of the issues you'd need to deal with in N Yorks. So, we've got some practice in.

Aside from that, who you are you judge where my heart is at? That's a very, very personal thing that you shouldn't be commenting on.

Every time I see those hills, every single bit of tension from my body dissipates.

That's how I know it's where my heart is. So yes, I am very aware that rural life in North Yorkshire can be brutal.

We both have ancestors from Yorkshire, so perhaps it's in our blood!

Also, excuse me if this sounds rude, but the word is spelled nice not naice. I keep seeing this on MN and wonder if anyone has ever told you that you are spelling it incorrectly?

PoshCoffee · 14/08/2023 14:49

I can assure you Kiev it’s rained solidly in Hebden Bridge since June this year.

F1ymetothetoon · 14/08/2023 14:54

@Cluckycluck today's episode of Escape to the Country 3pm BBC1 is around Knaresborough North Yorkshire so may be worth a look.

I've been reading about the area today as it's been mentioned in this thread. It does indeed sound very soggy and also very flood prone.

That's a nope from me! I can cope with a lot of things, regular flooding - it's just too much.

(we also get 45mph winds on a regular basis, including in summer, sometimes I feel like I live in a lighthouse)

Oh, and I meant to say June, same as you, not July.

I understand Southerners aren't having a particularly sunny time of it either?

CebelloRojo · 14/08/2023 15:04

Well that escalated quickly

Hotflushesinthesunfun · 14/08/2023 15:12

You won’t get rural with land around Ilkley or Otley or Harrogate or York for that price any more. It’s the golden triangle area. Those houses in Shadwell and Otley are both on main roads, though the Shadwell one isn’t too busy.

I would look where you are saying around Hebden Bridge if you like that feel, it’s vibrant and arty. East of Leeds and York tend to be cheaper and some lovely areas.

Hotflushesinthesunfun · 14/08/2023 15:24

A lot of the schools are still called Grammar but are comps. Ripon and Skipton have selective grammar schools. There are several private schools around Harrogate and York.
In the dales Giggleswick school has a very good reputation. And Hipperholme that people have mentioned further south.

Thank you to the pp who said Escape to the country is on. Knaresborough is lovely but very busy roads. It’s annoying this is a new series but was filmed in 2019, it would be interesting to see what the properties they look at would now be worth 4 years on.

"naice" is used jokingly on MN to refer to something that is trying to be classier than it really is, and probably takes itself very seriously. MN history of "naice"

LoveLabradors · 14/08/2023 19:19

Please also consider the Yorkshire wolds. A beautiful part of the world and just like it’s southern neighbour the Lincolnshire Wolds a much underrated area. Lovely villages and scenery. And with all the discussion of weather, East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire can get fabulous summers every bit as good as the South and East Anglia. Beverley is great. Easy reach to the north York’s coast and lovely parts of the East York’s coast like flamborough. Hull despite detractors is a good city too.
I would also look at the Hambleton Hills and Howardian Hills - Malton is a great town.

KievLoverTwo · 14/08/2023 19:35

@IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads thanks for the explanation. That makes far more sense now! I just thought the particular poster was all over the place 😵

Annasoror · 14/08/2023 19:37

Pecket Well just outside Hebden Bridge is lovely and there's a lot of land attached to some of the houses.

Struggllepiggle · 14/08/2023 19:50

I moved from the south to a village just outside Halifax so about 20 from Hebden Bridge.

Hebden is a lovely town and plenty for your teen to do along with that isolated feel.

I never came to Yorkshire before viewing the house (paid significantly less for your budget for 8 acres by the way!) but I feel right at home here and absolutely love it. I’ve found people to be incredibly friendly and welcoming.

I can’t comment on schools though.

@KievLoverTwo “Also, excuse me if this sounds rude, but the word is spelled nice not naice. I keep seeing this on MN and wonder if anyone has ever told you that you are spelling it incorrectly?”

’Naice’ is a phonetic spelling of a stereotyped ‘posh’ pronunciation of nice. It is MN shorthand for posh, upmarket etc. See also ‘leafy’. Did you really think that the poster doesn’t know how to spell nice?

I kept seeing it absolutely everywhere but I hadn't paid any attention whatsoever to username(s).

It baffled me. I couldn't figure out how everything was so grammatically correct except for that one misspelled word. And that the poster in question (wrong!) was posting everywhere, and often.

Colour me dumb! I have been MN educated and shall go and stand in a corner.

Mytholmroyd · 16/08/2023 17:50

Having lived in several places in Yorkshire the 'bleakness' is more to do with altitude than latitude - the climate/what will grow is much better in the rich agricultural lands of North Yorkshire close to the A1 than ~70 miles further south at 1000 ft near the M62!

harriethoyle · 16/08/2023 17:57

Yes @Words if Blackshaw Head floods, Noah's rescuing us all in the Ark!

Another vote for Hebden Bridge @Cluckycluck although if you aim for the houses/farms between Hebden and Todmorden which have an OL14 postcode you'll knock 50k off the price! HX7 still more expensive.

35 minutes on the train to Manchester, 50 minutes on the train to Leeds, and good senior schools in Huddersfield too.
