Where to move Yorkshire area

Cluckycluck · 11/08/2023 20:42

I'm looking to move to somewhere in the Yorkshire area. Currently in N.Essex but I'm looking for a complete change.

I don't have any clue about any areas of Yorkshire and I'm open to anywhere. I want to be rural or based on the outskirts of a village and I need to be near good independent schools. I don't need to be near to trains or good public transport infrastructure.

All suggestions about a nice area welcome!

Re Hebden Bridge and flooding - it's very easy to avoid the properties where there may be an issue. Generally it was the cheaper ones in the valley bottom between the river and the canal that (obviously) suffered the most. Flood defences now in place and second phase will start shortly.

OP's budget would buy her something beautiful with fabulous views and land up on the tops.

It's a great place to live, and surprisingly rural given proximity to Leeds and Manchester. Op , DM me if you want more info. I think I know the property that caught your eye. But let me know on here first as I use the app and will miss it otherwise.

This is the Hebden Bridge property I've seen, is this a no go due to floods?

@FatCatatPaddingtonStation That's lovely! It's only me and DD so I don't need anywhere massive. I'm downsizing from an 8 bed so one extreme to the other!

You won’t be at risk from floods up there, but you might be snowed in during winter.

Hebden Bridge has the Rishworth School independent school 20 minutes away and also North Halifax & Crossley Heath state grammar schools, but they are highly sought after and entry is massively oversubscribed and highly competitive.

Hebden Bridge town is quirky and has bars, pubs and restaurants and is also on a direct train line to Leeds, Manchester, Halifax.

You could do worse.

Just seen the link, and yes it was the property I thought. OP - the day Blackshawhead floods, we are all doomed. It's at least 1000 feet above sea level. Check adequate drainage for springs running past the property of course.

stiltonbriecheddar · 13/08/2023 07:23

Don't rule out East Yorkshire!

West Yorkshire- slaithwaite or Marsden or North Leeds
North Yorkshire - Harrogate
South Yorkshire- dunno

Marsden would be my choice too. Or the top part of Linthwaite

RampantIvy · 13/08/2023 07:34

I live in a pretty nice and rural part of South Yorkshire. The privately educated children go to school in Wakefield - Silcoates, QEGS or Wakefield Girls. There are sufficient numbers from round here that there is a school bus provided.

Leeds, Sheffield and Wakefield are all easy to get to.

Beamur · 13/08/2023 07:58

I live near Hebden Bridge. It's a great place. Rains a bit though.
The location of that property is at the less remote end of Blackshaw Head, still very pretty/rural but nearer the main road so easier to drive to. Not sure exactly what the roads are like - driving around here can be quite exciting on the rural roads. Bit narrow in places and a few steep roads. The shortest route to the main road from Blackshaw Head goes along 'Mytholm Steeps'.
Primary schools are all very good. It's a selective grammar area for which competition is stuff but not unachievable for bright kids. Local comp has lots to recommend itself by too - very strong on creative subjects. Good private school too - less successful on grades but has excellent facilities and very well rated by local families whose kids go there.
Hebden has good rail links, an independent cinema, canal, lots of bars/restaurants and cafes, more touristy than it was a decade or so ago but still lots of independent shops, lots of community stuff going on if that interests you, very arty, etc.. personally I think it's a great place for kids to grow up.

@MissDollyMix In what way do they differ?

The ones up here are much less elitist and tend to be solidly MC, or even tradies who have done well. Generally much cheaper too

I think there are fewer private schools in general, which means the standard of some of the state schools is as good if not better than some of the private schools. In Leeds, for example, there is only one selective fee-paying school (GSAL), and many of the local state schools get better results than the local non-selective private schools. The same goes for Harrogate. The parents who send their kids to private schools IME tend to be lawyers, doctors or business/ trades people - there is much less banking/ central government/ media wealth in Yorkshire than in the SE. (Also, some non-selective state secondaries in Yorkshire still call themselves grammar schools for historic reasons, e.g. Ilkley Grammar, Harrogate Grammar, Tadcaster Grammar.)

The Pennines and North York Moors are glorious in spring and summer, but if you visit try to imagine what it’s going to be like on a dark night in January when the rain is horizontal. Don’t let that put you off though!

RampantIvy · 13/08/2023 15:37

DD's old school has grammar in its title because it hasn't changed name since the 14th century when it was founded, but it is now a comprehensive school.

And my DDs old school has Grammar in its title for similar reasons but it’s now Private

North Yorkshire - Harrogate
South Yorkshire- dunno

South Yorkshire - Penistone
Outer rural reaches of Sheffield - Bradfield, Bolsterstine, Stannington, Ringinglow

KievLoverTwo · 13/08/2023 15:52

Word to the warning. Whilst I would say go for North Yorkshire without a shadow of a doubt, good internet is quite problematic throughout a lot of it. Idk if important to you or your DC. For this reason I a list of telephone exchanges in a lot of the places pp mentioned, I won't even look further than three miles of those postcodes. Some will of course have amazing things like B4RN net, but they are the exception rather than the rule.

Also, gas is in very scant supply outside of major towns such as Harrogate. Even a lot of medium sized towns are still on oil. The price of which fluctuates violent and there are no government protections.

Also bear in mind power cuts and winter accessibility.

Not trying to put you off. It's where my heart is and it's where I want to live, but the reality of N Yorkshire can sometimes be an uncomfortable shock to us Southerners. Large companies DGAS about the infrastructure of rural communities.

RampantIvy · 13/08/2023 16:54

Wise words @KievLoverTwo. Some of the villages in South Yorkshire still have no mains gas, as historically they relied on coal for heating. The gas companies didn't pipe gas to all the pit villages.

For internet provision I would just type the postcode into the various internet provider websites to see who can supply broadband. I would also use the broadband speed checker to check internet speeds.

I really like that, it’s much nicer than other things people are posting. We live in a similar area, not too far from HB. The only downside to a place like that is getting stuck in snow or icy conditions.

Have a look at Holmfirth areas too. Similar countryside to HB. Their high school is good and feeds the fabulous Greenhead college.

Holidayhouse1010 · 13/08/2023 19:05

Have a look at Todmorden, its right on the border of West Yorks, Lancs and Greater Manchester. You'll get more for your money than Hebden. Schools are similar, but there's Bacup and Rawtenstall state grammar too.

York villages wise, I'd be inclined to stay on the west side of York. You might feel very isolated the other way. The York city private schools are very good too. There's one indie school that's been mentioned a couple of times on this list. I daren't mention the name as the school is highly litegous and I've had a warning from mnhq for saying something negative before. Just make sure you google every school mentioned.

Also, you may find some state schools very good and on a par with some indies if you are looking for all round education. Ripon Grammar is state a very good.

Cluckycluck · 13/08/2023 19:12

No gas around here either so I'm fully used to oil and monitoring the prices! I'm used to powercuts and slow internet too.

It's really interesting to hear that state schools often get better results than private ones. That isn't the case around here and I'm not in an area for super competitive, selective schools. I will definitely have to look into that further.

The HB is the favourite property I've seen so far. There is one in Cononley too is there are any opinions on that area.

I also have one in Todmorden on the list.

All information is amazing! I have so much to look into

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 13/08/2023 19:29

In Hebden Bridge, you'd also have Rishworth School to look at for independent schools.

I know very little about it, other than it's our nearest boarding school; something that I researched when I was really struggling with DS's behaviour.

msmatcha · 13/08/2023 19:30

Kirkby Lonsdale is on the Yorkshire Cumbria border, really lovely, and near Sedbergh Prep and Giggleswick schools.

Beamur · 13/08/2023 19:42

Cononley is really rather nice too. That area generally might be worth a look. Just outside the National Park is better value for money too. My DH loves Settle and that area. Airedale on the N Yorks/Bradford border can be very busy on the roads but convenient for lots of places. Decent schools too but I'm less familiar with those.
Ilkey/Addingham are nice but expensive.

Virginsexonthebeachplease · 13/08/2023 21:25

North Yorkshire
Skipton, York, Harrogate, Ilkley but lots of other lovely towns and villages

@TheMagicDeckchair

I am planning a trip around to as many of the different areas as possible to see what I like best. I'm definitely after rural areas, I don't mind being isolated at all.

You keep saying this (the bit about isolation and almost deliberately avoiding places with public transport).

You might have grown up with that and not been bothered, but your child isn't you and might not feel the same.
If you're a single parent with one child, their social life/interaction with others is going to be very limited if you choose somewhere really isolated. It can work for large families, but even then, not for every member.

I think you should hedge your bets and look for somewhere that has that very rural feel, but still options for your child if, as they get older, they want to be independent and to hang out with their friends easily.

I'm inclined to agree with this, unless there is a back story.
