Gifts for people when moving house?

Anevilintervention · 08/06/2023 10:45

Hi all I'm moving next week and plan to leave a nice bottle of something for the new owner, plus give a cash tip for the movers. What about other people involved in the move eg EA, solicitors, did anyone give them cards, gifts etc?

No, I paid them!

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 08/06/2023 10:45

I didn't - you're paying them enough blinking money!

Whatevergetsyouthroughthenight · 08/06/2023 10:46

Nope! A bottle and card for the new owners and a tip for the movers.

RedRiverSun · 08/06/2023 10:46

There's no need for gifts for anyone else. If your EA/solicitor was great then I'm sure a card would be lovely.

CatsOnTheChair · 08/06/2023 11:01

We didn't tip the movers, but it was blinking hot, and DS did several trips to the local shop for ucecream (for kids and movers!).

KievLoverTwo · 08/06/2023 11:11

EA, solicitors. If they did a good job, the thing they'll appreciate most is positive online feedback.

Cupcakequeen75 · 08/06/2023 11:35

Nothing.
These companies are being paid for their work so why would we then give them extra?

House was left nice and clean, we left a pile of instruction booklets (boiler, cooker etc) and list of useful information. Wished them well but nothing more.
Didn't tip the movers, there were seven of them and if we gave them all £10-20 each it adds up. We obviously gave them drinks but that is it.

This!!!

BlueAndGreenStripes · 08/06/2023 11:40

No, only leave gift for the new home owner and tip removal men, the rest are paid too much already.
I wouldn’t leave alcohol though. I would leave tea bags, bread, toilet rolls, squash, washing up liquid and other useful things they might need immediately.

SquashPenguin · 08/06/2023 11:48

Nothing for our buyer because she was a huge pain in the ass. She got a clean house and appliance instructions.

Our sellers however left a framed map of the area from 1902. I’m a huge vintage map geek and I think I was excited about that than I was the house 😆

caringcarer · 08/06/2023 12:13

I bought EA a tin of shortbread for their office because they were good and our solicitors were terrible. A card and bottle of wine for buyer and a list of useful numbers like gas engineer who services boiler, window cleaner, cleaner/gardener you might have used and information on which day is bin day and recycling.

Anevilintervention · 08/06/2023 13:10

Thanks for the replies, seems overwhelming in favour of no gifts! @SquashPenguin what a lovely thing to leave! The sellers of this place we're just about to leave left us nowt but a couple of cooked chicken fillets in the oven 😬

Think we just left instructions/takeaway leaflets/ toilet rolls for new owners. Movers were given cold drinks /crisps/snacks whilst moving, and think we got them a box of cans of beer. They were great - 4 guys packed and moved us over 2 days. They earned their money!

SquashPenguin · 08/06/2023 13:49

@Anevilintervention that just reminded me of the time my sister moved out of her house and after she’d given the keys back remembered there was a tray of roast potatoes in the oven from two days previous 🤣

TrueScrumptious · 08/06/2023 13:55

I wouldn’t leave anything, really. Definitely not a tip for the movers. I wouldn’t leave a bottle of wine for the new owners -so many people don’t drink these days. Maybe some biscuits or chocolates?

EggInANest · 08/06/2023 14:11

We always tipped the removal team. Left nice biscuits and plant for new people. Good feedback for solicitors and EA because they did do a v good job and sorted out a series of issues and stand offs in a difficult chain.

Colette1404 · 10/06/2023 17:24

No from me, selling property is a go a coal transaction, not a personal exchange. So many brits are overly emotionally attached to property and the gift giving reflects that. Estate agents ear enough from commission. When we sold our flat I left a note for the buyer with some useful practical info. That's all.

BunnyBettChetwynnd · 10/06/2023 17:33

We've moved house 13 times and have always left a card and a bottle of champagne for the new people when we've moved out.

Only once has anyone left us something in a new house and that was a little hamper of essentials and chocolates......that was a lovely thing. Also, nobody has ever said thank you for the bottle and card we've left them.

Also, we always leave places spic and span and end up on our knees cleaning our way into new houses.

We send thank you cards to EAs, solicitors if they've been really helpful and efficient and always give a crate of beer to the removal guys.

Stripedbag101 · 10/06/2023 17:57

I left a bottle of wine for the new owners and tipped the movers £20 each.

that’s enough

ThreeFeetTall · 10/06/2023 18:08

Our EA went above and beyond and I sent them a box of cakes. Wouldn't tip for just doing their job

doitwithlove · 10/06/2023 19:41

I left the house I had sold with instructions & when bin day was .....

As for the solicitor - the company employed was shit (recommended locally by others) they got a huge kick up the arse - that was the least they deserved.

The removal guys were excellent they got a £20. Tip for a drink and appeared happy with that.

Apart from that the moving side went well

Aria2015 · 10/06/2023 19:52

We've always left a bottle of champers and card for the new owners. Didn't tip our movers as they did a poor job but otherwise would have been happy to.

RM2013 · 10/06/2023 19:56

We didn’t tip the removal team but they had a long break whilst we were waiting for keys - lots of hot drinks and biscuits were supplied along the way.

our buyers were lovely and we left them a card, a box file with all the instructions for the appliances left behind with a note of handy tips such as bin day etc. we also left them a small hamper with teabags, coffee, biscuits etc as they were FTB.

our sellers were complete arses despite us having to offer above asking for the house because they played us off. All they left was a filthy oven and both wheelie bins completely full to the brim 😩

OfficerPastiche · 10/06/2023 19:57

We had a lovely card and instructions from our vendor which we loved.
Our movers work d until 2 a.m. to complete (it was anyvan and they'd taken on the job as original cancelled) so massive tip for them.

Anevilintervention · 10/06/2023 20:05

Thanks everyone for the further replies however the move has fallen through 😩our vendor pulled out of the process as they're facing redundancy, we have to stay put as cannot afford to rent, plus if we step off the ladder we lose our fixed interest rate
