Will this wallpaper date/ suit my needs?

Hi
We renovated our home 3 years ago, had the whole thing painted white. Been looking at colours and think I'll put wallpaper in our snug. The room is about 4m x 4m. Two walls have bifold doors that open up and create a floating ceiling to the back garden, so was thinking the opposite walls to these doors ... this is the paper...

TIA

I would be cautious having something so "busy". Is there an app where you can VR the paper to get an accurate depiction?

SilentHedges · 01/05/2023 19:41

I've been looking at bird wallpaper, pref vintage style, for a Victorian house, for a long time. I finally settled on this, which comes in 6 different styles (inc a blue) and doesn't feel too busy on one wall. OP the one youve chosen feels too busy to me personally, but its all about about what you like.

Love it! It's gorgeous and I can imagine it would look fantastic on a couple of walls.

Tradescantia252 · 01/05/2023 19:44

I really don't like it, sorry. And yes I think it's already dated. But that's just my taste.

Partyandbullshit · 01/05/2023 19:54

I’m afraid the silver/grey makes it already dated. (Also, consider a room with x2 glass walls and x2 grey walls leading to a garden on a grey and dreary day$. But the style (floral, birds etc) will only date if it’s not super duper quality. Or, you can look for a bespoke, mural-style wallpaper. Take a look at Anthropologie home for ideas (their quality not excellent, but nice ideas and will lead you to purveyors of fabulous wallpapers!).

Changeling78 · 01/05/2023 20:09

Oh I really love it.

Junosui · 01/05/2023 20:11

My friend has this. It's not my style - I like plain things - but it looks absolutely stunning in her living room. I was very surprised by how much I liked it.

It's your home - it doesn't matter if something 'dates' if you love it.

FlyingFang · 01/05/2023 20:12

If you're worried about it looking dated in the future - it already is.

But don't buy for fashion, just buy what you like.

Mephisneon · 01/05/2023 20:16

I'm very into interiors and I'm sorry to say it's already quite dated. But if you like it use it, but if you're concerned about how dated it will look perhaps not.

Thanks - I'm soooo plain usually too - just wanted something a bit different in our snug ... the rest of the house is very plain lol 😆

Busy bird paper is dated and the grey tones are definitely dated. Soz

Thanks - can anyone recommend something that's silvery with a blue through it that's more trendy?

My personal opinion is that if you love something go for it. Decor will always have the potential to look dated particularly if it’s a particular trend and wallpaper is one of those love it or hate it things. Something could be on trend then date quickly with the next new thing.

Agree. That particular one is a little cold looking for my taste but that's my taste. If you like it go for it!

I have one wall at the top of the stairs that has bright tropical birds on. According to a PP this is already dated. Doesn't stop it looking lovely to me and making me feel happy when I see it.

AtrociousCircumstance · 01/05/2023 21:04

William Morris or something which feels from that era would be much nicer and look classic rather than dated.

GirlOfTudor · 01/05/2023 21:40

I don't like this, but it shouldn't matter whether some randoms on Mumsnet do. You're the one who has to look at it every day!

Fashions come and go. What's important is that you enjoy your home and it reflects your personality. Pick something you like and go for it.

custardbear · 01/05/2023 21:45

Ok thanks - I like very modern things, so wonder if this would not suit my tastes when on the wall

OP posts:
Greenfairydust · 01/05/2023 22:00

I like it.

I would only put in on one wall though as an accent and make the others a bright colour that matches some of the birds colouring for a modern contrast.

I would not worry about something being fashionable or dated...

It's your home. Do what makes you happy and find your own style.

Pigflewpast · 01/05/2023 22:19

I think a room opening up to the garden so much needs natures colours. That wallpaper would clash with the garden.
I like the one above from Etsy. Green would work much better than silver in my opinion.
But like others have said, it’s your house, choose what you love. Though if you’re already questioning it you maybe don’t love it enough.

Partyandbullshit · 01/05/2023 22:26

What about an art deco pattern? Blue and silver, if you like those colours? You can get it as fussy/I fussy as you want.

rach2713 · 01/05/2023 22:36

I have similar in my bedroom mine is navy blue backround and silver peacocks. I would love that in my living room..

I’m not a huge fan of the wallpaper you chose (although if you really love it then go for it- you’re the one who’s going to see it every day).

If you’re looking for other ideas with some grey/blue tones then I’d go for something like this:
https://www.littlegreene.eu/loriini-tuscany
or
https://www.littlegreene.eu/paradise-dusk
or
https://www.littlegreene.eu/belton-scenic-oyster
or
https://www.grahambrown.com/row/product/boreas-breathe-wallpaper/119796-master/
or
https://www.grahambrown.com/row/product/ink-blue-ombre-bespoke-mural/111845-master/
(I think having some other colours as well as the blue/grey makes it look less dated and more classic). Or having a more simple design might be nice if you’re going to add some more statement pieces of furniture/rugs etc.
I’d then add silver tones with other objects and accessories if you want silver (e.g. mirror/photo frames).

It’s totally personal preference though- what I like might not be right for someone else (I often see interior designs that aren’t my taste but that look amazing for someone else).
Also, I think a lot depends on what else you put in the room (furniture, accessories, curtains/rugs, paint colours, plants etc). If you get the styling right then your wallpaper will look lovely.
