Ball park cost for painters and decorators?

Would you mind sharing how much painters and decorators have charged recently?

we have only ever painted ourselves but need to hallway and stairwell - three storey- doing as it’s too high for us to reach - could anyone share a general amount they would expect - even if it’s day rate and how much you would see done in a day?

just trying to get a feel before I get quotes

Watching with interest, also want hallway, stairs & landing doing.

I had a small bedroom 6ft x 9ft. It was one wall as wardrobes cover the other wall. The charged £750 we supplied all the materials. It took three days.

We wanted more of the house done but can’t afford it.

Were you in the house at the time? What were they doing with themselves for 3 days? I painted my daughter's room in a day - no wardrobes, so four walls, one with a chimneybreast. I was WIPED but I did it.

I'm paying £1500 to have a very small 2 bedroom house painted in late May and expect it to take about 5 days. He's supplying the (bog standard white emulsion). Not woodwork. Spray paint thing.

florentina1 · 30/04/2023 08:44

Daily rate for decorators her is £150

regenerista · 30/04/2023 08:50

We have a handyman who does ours, he charges £26 an hour which I think is great value.

Really struggling to see how it could have taken that long too. A little while back I did a friends room, about 11x14 ft, went from dark blue to magnolia so light over dark (takes a bit longer). It took 1.5 days for 3 coats and I changed her £120, mates rates. Would have been nearer £200 full rate but what you paid seems really high!

chezpopbang · 30/04/2023 08:56

I think it really depends where you live. I live in Devon and paid £450 for 3 days work. He did our 2 storey hall landing and stairs in those three days.

CatOnTheChair · 30/04/2023 09:08

Before covid, we paid £100 a day plus we bought the paint. He was recommended by a friend, and MUCH cheaper than anyone else - so much so when he over ran and didn't want to charge us extra we just transfered over the extra 2 days (we got quoted 100/a day and not more than 10 days to do the whole house, emulsion and gloss).

I'd be thinking 150/day now would be pretty good value.

electriclight · 30/04/2023 09:58

Just paid £130 per day. Came highly recommended and does work for local letting agents. I thought he did a great job and I was happy with the price. It took 3 days to do my bedroom.

WhoInvitedHer · 30/04/2023 10:08

We have a 2 storey Victorian house so high ceilings. Last year we had a decorator do the upstairs landing ceiling, the wall coming down the stairs and the upstairs wall facing you as you come down the stairs. I did around the landing walls, the hall walls and woodwork except the loft hatch. It came to £350 and took 1.5 days for the decorator. I supplied the paint. It was a good way to keep the price reasonable as I don't mind decorating but didn't want to do the high walls and ceiling over the stairs.

Furries · 30/04/2023 12:41

My decorator is £160 per day - customer provides the paint. He’s good and he’s quick. He gets booked up way in advance.

Like pp, I try to do what I can myself - hell come in and finish the bits I can’t reach etc.

ShyMaryEllen · 30/04/2023 13:03

We have a 4 bed Edwardian terrace with high ceilings and a return staircase, and recently had the hall, stairs and landing painted. It was about £2.5k for lots of prep work, gloss on 6 doors upstairs (plus the dado and bannister), and 5 doors downstairs, as well as paint on the ceilings and walls. The prep work cost a chunk of that though, as it takes time to do properly.

That is an absolutely ridiculous price...they ripped you off.

themidimit · 30/04/2023 14:12

Just had 3 bedrooms, bathroom ceiling, hallway, stairs, entrance lobby and front door done. £1400 inclusive of paint. (Small house but still think good value)

TheEverdelightfulsamantha · 30/04/2023 15:15

Thanks all - that’s a really useful starting point - much appreciated

That surely isn't worth it?

Mistymoonsinastarrysky · 30/04/2023 15:28

Three bed semi, painted from top to bottom, ceilings, woodwork, everything £870 and took one man a week.

Omg this is extortionate and was a couple of hours work tops.

I had hall, stairs and landing. Including ceilings, coving, 4 doors and frames and all woodwork/skirting boards. £400 i supplied paint and sandpaper etc. Took two days.

starlight2023 · 30/04/2023 15:47

I've been quoted £1400 for hall, stairs and landing in a semi. There is quite a lot of woodwork (40 spindles, bannister, cupboards, skirting & coving, doors and door frames) wallpaper on the main wall and paint everywhere else, ceiling cracking to be repaired, about 7 days to do.

That seems a lot. I had a ceiling crack too. Its a victorian house so very high ceilings too. Id get another quote.

JadeSeahorse · 30/04/2023 16:01

We had our stairs, hall and landing - which included 9 doors - painted last year, (4 bedroomed detached). All woodwork - including stair handrail and spindles - glossed, ceilings and walls emulsioned and he restained our oak front door. Came recommended by a neighbour and did a fantastic job although had to wait about 10 weeks for him.

Total cost including the paint we requested - £270! It took him one and a half days.

How did he manage that? The paint must have come to more than that.

CharlotteDoyle · 30/04/2023 16:45

Ours charges a day rate of £200
