Who wants to decide how I should hang my curtains?

Cast your votes for a very boring decision.

Redecorating my study and not sure what would look best.

A) starting from the top of the wall, going to the floor. Read that this would make the room look and feel bigger and I think it kind of does but is it too much space between top of window and ceiling?

B) starting from the top of the window to the floor

C) starting from the top of the window to the bottom (this is what I had pre-redecorating)

and yes I did get an A in my Art GCSE, how could you tell?

Who wants to decide how I should hang my curtains?

Top of the wall to the floor - any interior decorator will tell you that!

Pallisers · 31/03/2023 13:39

I'd do B. (well actually I'd use a blind)

ShirleyPhallus · 31/03/2023 13:39

I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone hang their curtains from almost the ceiling?! I feel like it would look a bit murdery once in place.

think I’d go option c

bravo for your artwork

B

Anything else is weird.

Why? I'm intrigued (and know zero about interior design!)

Snowite · 31/03/2023 13:54

Pole height somewhere between A and B. Exact measurement up from window top should equal vertical measurement between pole end and window vertical. Make your pole as wide as possible but when drawn back curtains should cover (only) this window sides (so depends on curtain thickness and fullness). Curtain length 2cm above floor. Make your own and use lead tape at bottom so they hang perfectly.

This.

C is all wrong but it’s neither a or b, it’s a mid point between the two

mogtheexcellent · 31/03/2023 13:59

d - blinds.

or go without. Ive just redecorated my office and have removed the curtains. It looks out onto a north facing garden and the roof overhangs so needing to block sun isnt a requirement.

winelove · 31/03/2023 14:02

For curtains, A, top of the wall to the floor is my favourite BUT it has to be on plain track, or hidden track. I did this at my old house but the walls were white as was the track. Curtains went from ceiling to slightly pooled on the floor.

If walls are coloured or you have more fancy curtain poles B

This is the specificity I was looking for, thank you

I should say I have roman blinds in most of my rooms and they are hung from the ceiling and are open to just hide the top of the window gives you much more light. Out the back were we have large window and bifolds I have noting as we are not overlooked.

Avarua2 · 31/03/2023 14:06

Yep what @Snowite said

It gives the illusion of a bigger window and higher ceiling and opens up the space.

its a more ‘dated’ style to hang it above the window now apparently

when it comes to interior though, its just what you like

personally i’m a fan of style A out of those options

Snoken · 31/03/2023 14:14

It depends if it’s a track or a pole. A track should be A, a pole should be a little higher than B. Forget about C.

I wouldn't. But then I'm just an artist, not an interior decorator (and thankful to be so, given how ruddy awful the designs of some 'interior decorators' are). In that room, IMHO, the room looks larger with both the others- the first option brings the ceiling lower, visually, looks daft with such a small window, and makes the wall the window is on look narrower. Also, is that a radiator? It's not a great idea to put curtains in front of one, so floor-length ones are a problem.
Track or pole, well, the longer the curtain, the stronger any track has to be, so the longer the curtain, the more likely I'd be to choose a pole. Personally, I prefer poles, but in a workroom, I'd do as I do in my studio, have a roller blind. You can get 'thermal' ones too, good for winter nights. That means no obstruction to the light by curtains- curtains will block some light unless you have the track/pole a lot wider than the wndow, in which case you lose wallspace for pictures, shelves, or whatever.

RunningFromInsanity · 31/03/2023 14:36

Anything other than c will block the heat from the radiator?

RuthW · 31/03/2023 14:40

C- you need the radiator heat

AlltheFs · 31/03/2023 14:41

We have beams and as the ceiling isn’t straight it would look utterly ridiculous to align the pole to the ceiling rather than the window.

But the gap between our window and ceiling isn’t very big anyway, I can touch our ceilings with my palm and I’m 5ft 4.

I absolutely hate short curtains though. We have them upstairs as no choice (thatched cottage dormers) but never out of choice.

MulberryDerry · 31/03/2023 14:43

C - I don't like the half hidden radiator.

Would you consider Roman blinds?

Peridot1 · 31/03/2023 14:47

Yes with the way the radiator is so much wider than the window any curtains will look odd I think. Blinds would be better.

Wheretheskyisblue · 31/03/2023 14:48

B or A if you use a roman blind behind the curtains to cover up the wall above the window.

Borris · 31/03/2023 14:50

I like C 🤷🏻‍♀️

mrsjackrussell · 31/03/2023 14:54

I would go for b but with the pole a bit higher.
The curtains would cover the radiator though and you would lose heat so I would have a blind and just use the curtains for decor.

Chocolateydrink · 31/03/2023 14:55

In that room I'd have either option C or option D: a roman blind. Get some beautiful fabric, get it made to measure the window recess and get the blind interlined for warmth. It will look luxurious and be practical. That room would look silly with big floor length curtains, especially with the radiator partly showing. Speaking of which it better be painted the same colour as the walls.
