Who wants to decide how I should hang my curtains?

Cast your votes for a very boring decision.

Redecorating my study and not sure what would look best.

A) starting from the top of the wall, going to the floor. Read that this would make the room look and feel bigger and I think it kind of does but is it too much space between top of window and ceiling?

B) starting from the top of the window to the floor

C) starting from the top of the window to the bottom (this is what I had pre-redecorating)

and yes I did get an A in my Art GCSE, how could you tell?

I have unlined linen relaxed roman blinds in my bathroom and when they are shut some light gets through. But if you want privacy you'll need more of a voile or window film.

And finally check out what Mad About The House has to say about window dressings.

This is great, thank you.

No major need for privacy, the window just looks our our side return

Also, I think short curtains will make a fashion come back soon, long curtains have been considered more fashionable for two decades so I think we're due a revival.

I would be amazed if this ever happened, like Austrian blinds some things need to stay firmly in the past where they belong.

bussteward · 31/03/2023 17:20

If it weren’t for the radiator, A by a country mile. B just looks a little miserly, C is awful. But that radiator… a blind or a cafe curtain or solid shutters (not plantation, which are just Venetian blinds with good PR) is the better option.

I am heavily dedicated to moving radiators from beneath windows, though. I’ll always spend money on that, then get my curtains from eBay.

FernFairy · 31/03/2023 17:24

I'd have a blind or C. I don't get the snobbery around shorter curtains where they are practical. It would look really weird covering half the radiator with a long curtain.

fussychica · 31/03/2023 17:25

Normally I'd say a bit above your B drawing but because of the position and length of the radiator I'd say a blind will work best.

It’s mizzle by F&B - it is a nice colour!

Absolutely too lazy or organise moving the radiator anytime soon

Ooh thank you 😁

SophiaSW1 · 31/03/2023 19:53

Because there is a radiator here I'd choose c

katsue · 31/03/2023 19:56

Definitely a Roman blind so as not to block the heat. You can mount it above the window for maximum light. The ones in the photo do pull up higher.

Neither

Curtain poles should be 15cm above line of window
And 15 cm space to finials at either end.

That's how us professionals do it 😀

TattiePants · 31/03/2023 20:27

I’d usually say B, although hung slightly higher than your picture as curtains always look wrong if they aren’t full length. However, with the length of the radiator you’re going to have radiator sticking out to left of the curtains which will also look odd. It’s also not a big window so curtains will block some of the light so I’d choose a Roman blind fitted quite high up to let in plenty of light.

Itsonlyagame · 31/03/2023 20:31

C, the others will block your radiator.

HereForTheFreeLunch · 31/03/2023 21:04

In the interest of your heating bills, team C or blinds because they won't cover the radiator too.

We've just put poles up- more like 30 cms each side in our case, because we don't want the windows obstructed when the curtains are drawn, and they are velvet and lined so bulky- also, with a S-facing window, unless the curtains are drawn well back, even though they are lined, the edges will get light damaged if across the window in daylight.

Kentishbornknitter · 31/03/2023 21:14

C or you will have to tuck your curtains behind the radiator when it is on or lose all the heat up the curtains.

dunkery · 31/03/2023 21:51

The main thing you need to do is put a longer/wider curtain rail up so when open, both curtains are outside the window frame. That will make the window seem larger and let more light into the room.

Furries · 01/04/2023 01:55

I love the differences of opinion.

I am a weirdo who hates floor length curtains. If I had to choose, it would be option C - not just because of the radiator.

But I agree with others that blinds would be a better option for that room and window. The room doesn’t look big enough to pull off the supposed interior designer preferred A look.

Love the wall colour.

SunshineAndFizz · 01/04/2023 02:47

AlltheFs · 31/03/2023 13:40

B

Anything else is weird.

Yep

Ireallydohope · 01/04/2023 04:52

Option C looks the most normal to me with the window so low down and with the radiator in the way

Everyone I know has curtains to the window sill or shutters which of course are only the size of the frame

I don't know anyone who has floor length curtains for windows that aren't full length patio type doors.

Same here - 15cm each side wouldn't be sufficient to clear the windows when the curtains are open.

Height-wise, ours are hung somewhere between A and B....A definitely looks too high imho whilst B seems a bit stingy.

Definitely not C - although I agree with the view that a blind (roman would be my preference) might work best because of the radiator position.

I've had floor length curtains forever (seven houses going back to the 90s) as I think they look more luxurious and I'm hoping window sill length ones never come back as they look weird/old fashioned!

topofbighill · 02/04/2023 16:17

Remove radiator - or so I was once advised on here.

Jojoanna · 02/04/2023 16:34

I'm not keen on floor length curtains anymore . Except for patio doors

Chocolateydrink · 04/04/2023 16:34

I would be amazed if this ever happened, like Austrian blinds some things need to stay firmly in the past where they belong.

Austrian blinds are dust traps. Short curtains on the other hand are just practical in certain situations, like the OPs with the long radiator under the small window. And anyway, everything comes round again in a different form. In the 90s we all 'chucked out our chintz', now the Millennials and Gen Z love cottagecore. I even saw a photo of a very expensive designer avocado bath this week.

tootiredtobother · 04/04/2023 16:41

hang from a third of the way up on the header wall (top of window to ceiling)
drop to the floor, but i would do a blind as the radiator is wrong, center it under the window, then do dress curtains full drop either side that you don't pull across, one and a half widths of fabric minimum.

Strictlyfanoftenyears · 08/04/2023 12:43

Wow, I couldn't live with the radiator as it is, replace it with a short one then have lovely full length curtains top to bottom. (Why did someone think that radiator was a good idea........)

applespearsbears · 08/04/2023 13:04

Snowite · 31/03/2023 13:54

Pole height somewhere between A and B. Exact measurement up from window top should equal vertical measurement between pole end and window vertical. Make your pole as wide as possible but when drawn back curtains should cover (only) this window sides (so depends on curtain thickness and fullness). Curtain length 2cm above floor. Make your own and use lead tape at bottom so they hang perfectly.
