Who wants to decide how I should hang my curtains?

Cast your votes for a very boring decision.

Redecorating my study and not sure what would look best.

A) starting from the top of the wall, going to the floor. Read that this would make the room look and feel bigger and I think it kind of does but is it too much space between top of window and ceiling?

B) starting from the top of the window to the floor

C) starting from the top of the window to the bottom (this is what I had pre-redecorating)

and yes I did get an A in my Art GCSE, how could you tell?

Also, I think short curtains will make a fashion come back soon, long curtains have been considered more fashionable for two decades so I think we're due a revival.

restisall · 31/03/2023 14:59

The room gets very little light so any option would be more decorative than practical. I am coming round to the idea of Roman blinds though, maybe something sheer-ish to allow the light to come through and large enough to cover the ugly upvc frames. Will have a look for fabrics.

I would go A (as an interior design enthusiast), or as a PP said, somewhere between A and B.

Roman blinds are great but I do think curtains add a certain softness and break up hard surfaces. I put Roman blinds in our bedroom and then hung curtains over the top because it felt too stark!

allmycats · 31/03/2023 15:06

The radiator needs to be free to put heat into the room if curtains are drawn and with the radiator being so wide anything other than C will look odd. Go for C and/or a blind.

bobby81 · 31/03/2023 15:08

B. I'd have a blind as well.

parietal · 31/03/2023 15:15

either the half-way between A and B option or a Roman Blind. Again, hang the Roman blind high so it is well out of the way when pulled up.

lipstickwoman · 31/03/2023 15:17

Another vote for a blind, just because of the radiator

JuneOsborne · 31/03/2023 15:24

So nothing will trap floor length curtains? Nothing is going near there, furniture wise?

If this is a bedroom, I'd be going above window and window length, B. Are these heavy curtains or voile type things? If voile, you could do floor length.

You could get away with floor length in a living room.

Just a note, is that a radiator? You'll be trapping all the heat behind the curtains if they're heavy and floor length.

NotMeNoNo · 31/03/2023 15:40

I would fit them to the window (c)

Obsession with making a room look "grand" with huge theatre style curtains is impractical in a small room and just results in long thin sad looking curtains when open. Also will obstruct your radiator and probably get in the way of furniture.

NotMeNoNo · 31/03/2023 15:42

If using a Roman blind it can be made so when pulled up, it just covers the top of the window reveal and doesn't block light. That would be practical for a study and you could have a desk by the window.

TheFeistyFeminist · 31/03/2023 15:44

For that window, C, but put the pole a bit higher. Don't block the radiator with curtains or the heat won't be felt in the room in the winter.

EstherHazy · 31/03/2023 15:51

Well this is very divisive isn't it! Which is actually very encouraging as it must mean there's no such thing as a massive curtain faux pas if we all have different views, despite the interior design mags making out to the contrary!

For me, for the practicality of not losing the heat behind the curtain, C or Roman blind, but I understand C is probably the least fashionable on offer.

Bimblybomeyelash · 31/03/2023 15:59

I’m team blinds as well. If it has to be curtains then I’d go for B, but a bit higher. I think A looks silly in a small room.

will your desk go in front of the window?

User639762456 · 31/03/2023 16:00

C because of the radiator

User639762456 · 31/03/2023 16:03

Definitely not A as that is for a large room and large window or doors, not a medium window like that

LadyKenya · 31/03/2023 16:05

C, or a blind.

PlantMania · 31/03/2023 16:12

Sorry, can't help with the curtain advice - but could you tell me what the paint colour is? It looks lovely !

ApolloandDaphne · 31/03/2023 16:13

Roman blinds for sure. You will get more light if you hang them outside the recess.

SacreBleeurgh · 31/03/2023 16:14

It has to be a Roman blind, surely?!

Snowite · 31/03/2023 16:20

If you need privacy and don't want to obstruct radiator heat, you can (as previously mentioned) go for Roman blind in addition to curtain. A very light/translucent Batiste with thin rods can work well fixed inside the cavity...so long as fabric is light and pleat width narrow they will fold up without blocking too much light if required.

You can also think about fixed gathered voile or chiffon silk (!) privacy curtain attached to the top of the uPVC frame using sticky hook velcro on the frame and sewn loop velcro to the tab of the privacy screen (velcro makes it removable for washing). This is what I have (in addition to full length curtains) in my study.

If you are just after covering the top and sides of the window there are other solutions too!

parklimes · 31/03/2023 16:23

Top to the floor because that's how mine are 😁

Or change the radiator to one that isn't under the window.

Though you probably don't want to do that now but it's worth having a think about the next time before you redecorate a room.

Theraffarian · 31/03/2023 16:51

Definitely a blind and not curtains for that room . Normally I would go for long curtains , but that’s not great over a radiator in terms of blocking the heat on winter days when you pull the curtains early. However I feel any curtains are going to make the room look even more off centre since the window is at one side , blinds will be less eye drawing.

Chocolateydrink · 31/03/2023 16:53

I have unlined linen relaxed roman blinds in my bathroom and when they are shut some light gets through. But if you want privacy you'll need more of a voile or window film.

And finally check out what Mad About The House has to say about window dressings.

It’s mizzle by F&B - it is a nice colour!

Absolutely too lazy or organise moving the radiator anytime soon
