Crying my eyes out, new neighbour has just put all the beautiful period fretwork from his Edwardian house in the skip -smashed up!

I didn't even get a chance to rescue any of it... and it's nicer than mine, beautifully detailed. Why do people buy period houses and then strip them bare of what makes them special?

Crying your eyes out? Over some fretwork?

maddy68 · 14/02/2023 18:08

It's his. Nothing to do with you
What a massive over reaction

007DoubleOSeven · 14/02/2023 18:08

Oh you're going to get roasted op.

WeWereInParis · 14/02/2023 18:09

You're crying? I wouldn't have done what's he done, but it's not your fretwork he's smashed!

ThreeFeetTall · 14/02/2023 18:09

Probably broke when they tried to get it out. I'm sure they would have sold it if not!

Boulezvous · 14/02/2023 18:11

That’s a shame. Might have been in bad condition. Not worth crying over though.

JamJarJane · 14/02/2023 18:12

I understand this. It's so sad that people don't value the beauty of older houses. Some cultures believe that objects develop a soul after 100 years, and that's how I feel when I'm in an old house with original features. I get it OP (but still, you'll get flamed for saying you were crying).

EyesOnThePies · 14/02/2023 18:12

He’s an ignorant vandal.

bilbodog · 14/02/2023 18:12

OP i feel your pain!

StephanieSuperpowers · 14/02/2023 18:13

I think I'd be upset too, OP. I hate to see beautiful things that can't be ever properly replicated destroyed. Why would you buy a period house with original features and ruin them beyond repair when even bringing them to reclaiming yards so that someone else can use them for a restoration would be better? There's something so careless, thoughtless and heedless about it.

Saltywalruss · 14/02/2023 18:13

That's sad :-(

Diyextension · 14/02/2023 18:13

What’s special to you is not to someone else . It his house he can do what he likes.

Fleabigg · 14/02/2023 18:14

It’s his house! I don’t really get it either, I’d buy a modern house if I wanted a modern looking house but crying your eyes out seems ridiculously excessive.

Nolongera · 14/02/2023 18:15

Crying?

Try not to fret over it.

Vandal? It's his own stuff, you can't vandalise your own stuff.

Oliveandbay · 14/02/2023 18:15

Have you been to the Sistine Chapel recently OP?

bilbodog · 14/02/2023 18:12

OP i feel your pain!

So do I. Seen far too many lovely Victorian and Edwardian houses on Rightmove that have been turned into soulless boxes.

Meandfour · 14/02/2023 18:16

It’s shit but crying your eyes out is a very extreme reaction!

MrsRickAstley · 14/02/2023 18:16

Crying & shaking ?? Or just crying

StarbucksSmarterSister · 14/02/2023 18:16

Why do people buy period houses and then strip them bare of what makes them special?

Because they're Philistines. If people want to live in a boring box why not just buy one instead of trashing a period property? Ugh.

picklemewalnuts · 14/02/2023 18:16

Houses outlast their owners. We are custodians more than owners. We should leave a house desirable for the next owners, too.

Logburnerperils · 14/02/2023 18:18

I always get here to late for the sistine chapel comment

Deadringer · 14/02/2023 18:19

It's a shame. My friend and her dh bought a beautiful victorian house and took two years sourcing period pieces and restoring it to its former glory, no expense spared. They broke up and the house was sold and so many of their beautiful fixtures and fittings were thrown in a skip as the new owners modernised it. So wasteful, aside from anything else.

SunlightThroughTrees · 14/02/2023 18:19

I get it OP. Where I live loads of people completely gut their beautiful period houses and extend them into huge identikit houses with enormous dark grey framed windows (which I think are very quickly going to be the equivalent of 80s dark wood effect window frames). It feels like such a waste of a beautiful house.

Yes, yes I know people can do what they like with their houses but I still think it’s a shame to get rid of beautiful period features.

That thread was gold 😂

maddy68 · 14/02/2023 18:22

It's probably been removed because it's rotting
