Crying my eyes out, new neighbour has just put all the beautiful period fretwork from his Edwardian house in the skip -smashed up!

I didn't even get a chance to rescue any of it... and it's nicer than mine, beautifully detailed. Why do people buy period houses and then strip them bare of what makes them special?

I'd share your dismay but I wouldn't cry over it!

watchfulwishes · 14/02/2023 18:24

You can look forward to telling him he could have sold it.

But this is just how it goes, we can't keep everything. I lived in a medieval building that had had Victorian alterations. Ultimately it is just a building.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 14/02/2023 18:24

Sunlight I was just going to mention those awful grey windows. 😁

The thing is by removing original features they are actually going to devalue the house compared to what it would be worth if they conserved them.

Onnabugeisha · 14/02/2023 18:26

I understand OP. I guess I would hope it was all wormy or termite infested. Perhaps he will replace with replica fretwork. Can only hope.

IsItBedtimeYetNope · 14/02/2023 18:26

OP you clearly have the soul of an archaeologist. You could console yourself by maybe starting a research project on the history of your house and find out who built them, when, what sort of people lived there etc. A bit like genealogy but for your house.

jtaeapa · 14/02/2023 18:27

I never knew what fretwork was until I just googled it

LoveMAFS · 14/02/2023 18:27

No, not really, it's a literal saying!

[Hmm]

sarahc336 · 14/02/2023 18:30

Oh I also hate seeing this too op!!!!

KalvinPhillipsBoots · 14/02/2023 18:31

Not even yours! Goodness sake

wordler · 14/02/2023 18:31

Pop round now and check what else he's removing - you might be able to get a bargain!

thedogsmababy · 14/02/2023 18:31

It's his house 🤷🏼‍♀️. Crying your eyes out? Really?

KalvinPhillipsBoots · 14/02/2023 18:32

EyesOnThePies · 14/02/2023 18:12

He’s an ignorant vandal.

It's his house and property.

sjxoxo · 14/02/2023 18:34

He’s an ignorant vandal.

Agree!! are you sure you can’t rescue any.. I’d be tempted! X

EverlastingRose · 14/02/2023 18:34

KalvinPhillipsBoots · 14/02/2023 18:32

It's his house and property.

Not sure these things are mutually exclusive.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 14/02/2023 18:35

Not even yours! Goodness sake

People don't need to own something to appreciate its beauty.

Eastereggsboxedupready · 14/02/2023 18:35

It was a sad day in our street when the Big Green House was measured up for it's UPVC windows....
Old sash windows plunged to their doom in the road....

MrsFrugal · 14/02/2023 18:36

I totally get the sentiment OP, it's a shame we are trying to restore a large edwardian property that has had a 60's renovation back in the day. I keep seeing alot of antique furniture on fb marketplace that is free and I just know its going to end up at the tip!

StarbucksSmarterSister · 14/02/2023 18:36

I presume you're not in a conservation area OP? In case he's planning to trash anything else.

Surroundedbyfools · 14/02/2023 18:37

For gods sake dry ur eyes and wise up

yes maybe he didn’t value it as much as u would of but it was his to do as he pleases.

may all ur upsets in life be this small

Clymene · 14/02/2023 18:37

People like that should be forced to live in new builds.

Twillow · 14/02/2023 18:39

It is sad. And unfortunately a distinct possibility that it could slightly devalue your property too, by removing character features in the locality, for all the posters saying it's none of your business.

itsthefinalcountdown1 · 14/02/2023 18:40

It's probably falling to pieces. I bought a very old house and the walls were literally crumbling off. Unfortunately, some old features just had to go in the skip as it would have been too costly to salvage. Not everyone can afford to do up every ancient feature to save it!

This doesn't mean we all want to live in a new build, room sizes are TINY.

Cocobutt · 14/02/2023 18:42

I hate when people throw stuff away, especially in a skip where it can’t be recycled.

I’m sure someone could have made use of something like this and it would pain me to see history just being thrown out with no regard.

But it is his home and he can do what he wants.
It may have been so damaged that no one would want it anyway
.

Cocobutt · 14/02/2023 18:44

Pop round now and check what else he's removing - you might be able to get a bargain!

I would definitely do this.

I’m sure he wouldn’t mind if you asked to have it.
