Newly painted bathroom - hate it

I've just painted my bathroom and I absolutely hate it.. I know it's not a finished product yet as it doesn't have any accessories yet, and definitely needs a second coat of paint. I wanted to try make the room light and airy as it doesnt have a window but now it looks even darker in there and I'm not sure what to do.

I was thinking some panelling on the wall.

Any suggestions would be welcome

Thanks!

It is a very gloomy colour. Repaint it in fresh vibrant colour and it will look fab.

RubyPip · 30/01/2023 20:57

Was it painted today? If so, it needs at least overnight to dry for the full effect!

It's a lovely colour. I'd add artwork, a big mirror, some foliage (fake or real!) It'll look great, accessories make a huge difference.

IheardYouButDontWantToAnswer · 30/01/2023 20:58

Repaint it.

PinkDaffodil2 · 30/01/2023 20:58

Is it dry? Pale paint looks so dark and grey and blotchy while it’s drying - it might be absolutely fine tomorrow.
If you’re not happy with it tomorrow you might get away with one coat of something lighter.

pleaseandthankyou45 · 30/01/2023 21:01

It's really hard to tell from the photo - what was the colour you picked out?

coffeewithmilk · 30/01/2023 21:02

I've only just finished painting it now, so it is still wet. The picture makes it hard to see the actual colour but it's a mauve/pinky colour.

I think you're right about adding mirror and foliage. It just looks so glum at the minute which is the complete opposite vibe I was going for

@pleaseandthankyou45 it's Valspar 'poetry in motion'

Wait and see before you panic!

It looks like plaster, I’m not surprised you hate it.

just repaint in a better colour.

NormaTheWife · 30/01/2023 21:05

No window in it?

Plaster paint colour is en trend atm.

pleaseandthankyou45 · 30/01/2023 21:07

Eesh yeah I think you need something lighter. Poetry in motion looks quite dark even on the swatch. I'd go for something with blue or yellow undertones

coffeewithmilk · 30/01/2023 21:09

@NormaTheWife yeah there is no window - it's a downstairs WC in a new build.. would love a window but it's not possible to put one in

Yes it does look like plaster at the minute.. but the more it dries the pinker it is going.
The thought of having to repaint fills me with dread.. my DH didn't want to paint it, but I said I'd take on a project on my own and now it's already a disaster

I like the colour. Our downstairs loo has no window and I put in a circular mirror with a light all round it. It's wired to the light switch so comes on when you turn the light on. Almost gives the illusion of a window. Really helps in small windowless space. Also agree with PP about a bit of foliage.

NormaTheWife · 30/01/2023 21:32

If you really don't like it then repaint it BUT give yourself a few days for it to dry and you to get over the change. I actually like it.

Rebel2023 · 30/01/2023 21:39

Googled it and the colour is lovely
Let it dry, add plants, mirror, accessories and see how it looks
I painted my hallway dulux chic shadow and it looked so dark. I love it now though!

Furries · 30/01/2023 22:08

Wait for it to dry properly. If you’ve only done one coat, it’s going to look patchy and odd, so you really need to do the second coat.

Paint the skirting - it looks a bit too cream. A clean white will make a difference.

Get your accessories in there, you’ll be surprised what a difference they make.

Gunpowder · 30/01/2023 22:40

Ooh I like it!! Agree about the big mirror, plant and painting skirting.

NellyBarney · 30/01/2023 22:46

It has nice warmth to it. It will make any mirror, skirting, art pop. I don't know the colour, but if it is similar to Setting Plaster, it will go amazingly with blues, greens, white and make them look really vibrant.

Furries · 30/01/2023 22:47

By the way, you’ve done a good job with your cutting-in 👍🏼

I was thinking this too! Excellent work OP!!

Colour is such a personal thing. This colour wouldn't be something that I would pick and in a windowless, small room I'd have gone for something brighter and lighter. But that really just is about personal taste.

Paint the skirting boards white as @Furries suggests and hang a mirror in there and maybe some accessories - that will change how it looks completely.

I would personally repaint it, but I wouldn't have chosen that colour in the first place - so I think that's more just that I don't like the colour rather than it being a "wrong" choice IYSWIM.

And it's absolutely NOT a "disaster". This will look fine when it's finished. Your cutting-in shows you're doing a really good job, regardless of what colour you end up with!!

PragmaticWench · 31/01/2023 07:00

I think the lighting doesn't help, it looks cold and poorly lit. Can you add a light over the sink?

Loobyloo68 · 31/01/2023 07:05

I have a small ensuite with no window, painting a light colour doesn't make any difference, go darker , it looks warmer and makes accessories stand out

picklemewalnuts · 31/01/2023 07:13

You're looking at it wrong, because you are thinking about the walls.

Think about the bits you look at- the wall opposite the loo and the wall opposite the door. Good mirrors, and something good reflected in them.

Is anyone wondering about bringing the ceiling down a bit with white paint down the walls? Fake coving, or something?

picklemewalnuts · 31/01/2023 07:19

There's a photo on QuentininQuarentino's thread that has a great light shade with makes the walls two tone, and tiles that go up behind the toilet. It's a good way of breaking up the walls without it looking scrappy.
