Essex house with ‘dated brown windows and awful decor’ …

JulieRtn · 22/01/2023 10:28

… has now had two offers at asking price. Thankfully there are some intelligent viewers out there who can somehow manage to see past wallpaper, mirrors, flowers, furniture and candles which may not be exactly to their taste 👍

@JulieRtn I knew it was going to get slated the minute you posted the RightMove link just because it's an expensive house compared to most of the country and gorgeous to boot. People were envious and leapt on the chance to give 'constructive criticism'. Some of the advice was quite good though, I thought, though not the vicious parts about decor. I bet it gets bought by a mumsnetter. I'd move in there an second and cook up a storm in that dreamy kitchen haha

Clymene · 22/01/2023 17:43

Hurrah, very pleased for you.

I've noticed more and more that some less experienced buyers seem to think property needs to look like an interiors magazine to sell.

Delighted you've proved them wrong.

FTStheFirstTimeSeller · 22/01/2023 17:45

Great! Congrats and fongers crossed.

Another one asking what changed? Was it just market picking up or did you change agents?

JulieRtn · 22/01/2023 19:34

Thanks everyone. It was actually the viewer who viewed the day before I posted and then another from this week. Probably just a better time to sell in the new year and our last price reduction obviously helped. I guess it’s a bit like buses, you wait ages and then two come along at once 😆

just goes to show... there is no accounting for taste

Horses for courses.

MN would have probably needed smelling salts if they’d seen my first purchase. The flat was a complete mess, it was totally fugly.

Too many people are focused on the perfect show-off home.

OP, I didn’t see your previous thread, but congratulations on finding a buyer. Hope the process goes as smoothly as possible for you.

I agree. I have seen posters on previous threads say they are influenced by what kind of bed linen the seller has. In my opinion, it's insane. Look at the room, size, how much light, and the potential of a house etc.

Too many people lack imagination.

And? That’s your opinion. Someone else has decided they want to buy it. Who gives a fuck what you think of the decor 🤣

TheLeadbetterLife · 23/01/2023 05:44

Good for you OP. I thought your windows and render colour were much nicer and more in keeping with the mock Tudor style than the house next door (that everyone on that thread was wanging on about).

Your windows looked well-made and expensive, and the brown wood in the interior looked right too.

The white windows next door looked cheap to me, and wrong for the style of house.

I couldn’t believe all the people telling you to change or paint the window frames. But people are mental on here.

Yup, it’s nuts. I think a lot of people miss out on options, they are too focussed on what is “in” right now. I’d rather not pay over the odds and spend a bit of time decorating to my own taste. It’s served me well so far!

Omfg! 😂😂 I was going to make a joke about not liking OPs house because I didn’t like the pillow-cases.

How stupid are some people?

JulieRtn · 22/01/2023 16:47

They really didn’t, we actually found it quite amusing.

So amusing you got MNHQ to pull the thread then started a TAAT to show just how unbothered you are?

if you find it amusing why didn’t you leave the original thread up?

MonsoonMadness · 23/01/2023 06:47

I thought it was a lovely house too OP. Good luck.

Aaaah hold on everyone, it’s ok. The Head of Home Decor is here to give us their esteemed opinion. Thank goodness. Such a helpful comment, and so constructive.

🙄🙄🙄

Did your parents never teach you that not every thought you have has to be voiced?! Bloody spiteful, and totally unnecessary.

Hobbesmanc · 23/01/2023 07:01

Grrr really annoying that the original post has gone! Sounds like a classic

Oh I love your house. I love the Tudor look. Good luck with the offers 🤞🏻

This is a really unpleasant thread. Lots of people posted in good faith to try and help the OP sell.

As another posted said "You were the one who asked for help and pointers as to why no one was interested, though? I don't get the smugness.". It's great you've sold but please do bear in mind that in other similar threads, the poster has not sold and has then used the feedback from MN thread to create an excel sheet to tally the common comments and re-presented their house so people can see it's potential. Yes there were some bonkers comments, there always are. But most people were trying to help.

It's not unpleasant. Some people on the OP's thread were helpful but a lot were spectacularly rude about her house. I don't blame her for coming back and saying fuck you.

PopsicleHustler · 23/01/2023 07:26

I think your home is lovely. Inside and out. Some people can just be so rude. Am happy you got the offers and wish you allcthe best with your new home. I am currently looking for a new home also with my husband and big enough for our 6 children! I found the dream home, just staying positive we will get it!

And I see some of them arrived on this thread.

Since original thread is gone, I think it's good to repeat for everyone:
Calling someone's decor repeatedly chavvy is NOT helpful or constructive feedback.
Calling someone's taste horrible/poor/terrible/wag like is NOT helpful or constructive feedback.
It does not show willingness to help, only happiness to kick someone and quite frankly, an inability to express their thoughts properly (if that really was meant as helpful feedback, not just bitching session).

Most posters were normal, but bloody hell. The rudness of some and then doing this wide eyed puppy head tilt "but op asked fo help" was unbelievable.

I get why op came back with smug tone.

You'd be surprised if you saw the house, it was mainly cream. Kitchen was cream, shaker style, white bathroom suite, just with black loo seat and bath panel I think. A chimney breast was wallpapered and there was a swirly wallpaper under the dado rail in hall. Brown windows and dark wood only on handrail of banister, all other woodwork white. Really well maintained. I think some people expect it was in dire need of modernisation, or gawdy decor everywhere. It really wasn't!

It was the mirrors which did it. Just wrong mirrors tak tsk. Diwnstairs toilet mirror was main culprit if i remember correctly 😁

I don't blame her either. The other thread was proof that a lot of mumsnetters live completely in their heads with seemingly no idea about RL. There were some horrible comments.

Thoughtful2355 · 23/01/2023 08:07

To be fair everyone has different tastes... Of course some people would love that, people were only sharing there opinions on why they wouldn't put an offer on it.. as you asked! Round here a really ugly house got sold, within 2 years they had done everything people said should be done with it. Some people don't care about things and some do.

Wasn't supposed to be offensive
