Essex house with ‘dated brown windows and awful decor’ …

JulieRtn · 22/01/2023 10:28

… has now had two offers at asking price. Thankfully there are some intelligent viewers out there who can somehow manage to see past wallpaper, mirrors, flowers, furniture and candles which may not be exactly to their taste 👍

OP posts:

Hurrah!! Was a lovely house and I'd kill for that kitchen!

I remember thinking how well you took all the feedback on board - especially when many of the comments were quite mad!

Perennis · 22/01/2023 13:20

Can anyone link to the other thread?

RichardOsmansXraySpecs · 22/01/2023 13:27

Is this the one with the wallpaper going up the stairs? I thought that was a lovely house and definitely not '90s decor' as some posters suggested. The brown windows thing also had me stumped.

Can anyone link to the other thread?

OP had it taken down I believe.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 22/01/2023 13:33

Good news OP - I thought the comments were harsh (I dread to think what the perfectionists would say if they saw my house).

MrsMontyD · 22/01/2023 13:41

@SoupDragon She was on the previous thread, not this one.

No-one is doing to fully renovate a house to an unknown buyers exact requirements, so there's no point trying. Anyone who thinks there's too much to do will just scroll past on Rightmove.

The OP needed tips like a new kitchen photo with the under cabinet lights turned off, not have all your windows replaced and have done whole house rendered.

I had my bathroom done a few years ago, knowing I'd want to sell eventually and it was desperately in need of completely gutting, I kept it simple, modern but not trendy to appeal to as many people as possible, but also a style I liked and wanted to live with.

If I put my Rightmove photos on here now I'm sure I'd need told you replace the kitchen and have a new drive laid etc. but no seller is going to do that.

Cocobutt · 22/01/2023 13:48

Some of the replies on that thread were absolutely ridiculous and some of them were rude just to be rude, so I wouldn’t take much notice of them anyway.

Congratulations on selling your home and it just goes to show not everyone wants their home all white and grey like the majority of MNers.

WimbyAce · 22/01/2023 13:48

Glad about this as I have brown windows lol

Yes, I know it was on the last thread but she asked why people weren't viewing. You then saying to someone "oh, but surely you'd just not view" is one reason why people weren't viewing and the whole point of that thread and it's follow up.

Kitcaterpillar · 22/01/2023 14:04

Ah, well done OP. That thread was insane!

greenspaces4peace · 22/01/2023 14:06

I loved the brown windows!! Positive thoughts OP!

Swimmingpoolsally · 22/01/2023 14:06

That’s great news, from what I saw of the thread you seemed to be taking rhe comments well.

clearly not…

I’ve noticed that recently, when did that change? Has Netmums closed down or something?

Cuppasoupmonster · 22/01/2023 12:04

I can understand about literally ‘furniture and finishes’ but things like replacing all carpets and painting throughout, a new bathroom suite, significant work to clear and redo the garden is time/money/effort that a lot of people don’t have. I’m looking to buy and I won’t view anywhere which requires any of this work doing, I’ve just had it done to ourselves (only painting, carpets and a few minor jobs). Tradespeople take forever to book in, don’t turn up, charge the earth and when they do turn up they do a crap job then try to blame your house. You have to move all your furniture which isn’t easy if you’re pregnant/disabled/a single woman etc. We’ve had issue after issue just trying to do simple things.

Oh I agree that it can be off putting if a lot of that needs to be done, and you don’t want to! It’s just that people are told to strip out houses and present them in a way that sells a lifestyle, in order to get offers. That’s the bit that seems mad to me. Not to be able to imagine that a house would look different with your own things in it is nonsense.

BruceAndNosh · 22/01/2023 14:30

Mirabai · 22/01/2023 13:11

The decor was ghastly it’s true, however the price was totally fair and it was a good house for the money.

No, the decor wasn't to your taste.

Mountlea · 22/01/2023 14:36

SoupDragon · 22/01/2023 10:35

What on earth is that supposed to mean?

It means ‘Shut up, nobody cares’. Lovely poster🙄

I’m guessing the previous thread turned nasty OP? That’s a shame, though not surprising. I agree the wood and decor was a tad dated but the house itself was lovely and bright and spacious. It’s not like it had green carpets, orange walls and floral sofas!

Blip · 22/01/2023 14:47

Yes!!!
This house was really well presented and I'm delighted for you OP!

mathanxiety · 22/01/2023 14:55

Agree with @CocoLux

oiltrader · 22/01/2023 14:58

just goes to show... there is no accounting for taste

Astrabees · 22/01/2023 15:12

There is a house in my village that sold at full asking price in less than a week. It had patterned artex ceilings. Lots of purple walls, dated kitchen etc. etc. But it also had good sized rooms and a big garden looking out over fields. In real life not many people are interested in decor, kitchens and bathrooms usually get replaced anyway. Congratulations on the sale, op, I thought your house had a lot going for it.

HisRoyalWhineness · 22/01/2023 15:28

To be honest, you're actually better off pretending you don't care and saying nothing, rather than posting this, which shows that the trolls actually did quite successfully wound you.

Some people really are just bloody rude.

They really didn’t, we actually found it quite amusing.

Probably the same sort of people who wouldn’t dare say stuff like that in real life.

EL8888 · 22/01/2023 17:20

@JulieRtn great update! Good luck with the sale. People were unnecessarily rude l felt. Especially with the the house being so well sized, light and a good location. Funnily enough l only live round the corner and often drive by your house
