And if so what?

OP posts:
NewHouseNoMoney · 17/10/2022 13:54

Our sellers left us shit stains in the loo, a stained mattress, a van full of rubbish (made them come back and collect it), filthy carpets, a wasp nest, holes in walls and scraped paintwork.

Would have loved a bottle of wine!

CarrieMoonbeams · 17/10/2022 13:55

They were first time buyers for my late dad's house. We left them a card, bottle of champagne, 2 plastic champagne flutes, a note about bin days and who the neighbours were, and menus for the local takeaways!

They were a lovely couple who were so excited to be buying their first home together.

thewaitislong · 17/10/2022 13:56

Our seller left us wine and a card. Appreciate the gesture, but the wine went in the bin as we don't drink, but I guess it's the thought that counts?
(Why alcohol is considered the default appropriate gift is another topic - wish it wasn't, as stats show a quarter of adult population doesn't drink)

drinkwithanumbrellainit · 17/10/2022 13:57

Big box of green and blacks and a card.

NCFT0922 · 17/10/2022 14:02

@thewaitislong you don’t know of a single person who likes wine who you could’ve given it to instead of throwing it away?

Turnaroundandigone · 17/10/2022 14:03

Our sellers left a folder with all the house info, instruction booklets etc in, and a bottle of wine.

QueSyrahSyrah · 17/10/2022 14:04

There was 2 bottles of wine in the fridge when I moved in, tester pots of the paints for various rooms so I knew which colours they were, and a note with various bits of info.

mrsbyers · 17/10/2022 14:05

Champagne , card , a pack with all the instructions / warranties for the built in appliances , codes for burglar alarm and pub shed , details of bin day etc. They actually let us store some things for a couple of days after our removal van ended up too small so then I got them a Amazon voucher too - the benefits now are they let us know if post arrives that I thought address had been changed and I may have had a couple of parcels delivered there by accident

2bazookas · 17/10/2022 14:06

Always. A welcome card, a bottle of wine and two wine glasses.

I also leave them a folder of instruction manuals, guarantees, useful contact numbers.

ABrotherWhoLooksLikeHellMugYou · 17/10/2022 14:11

Left a pint of milk in the fridge, a packet of biscuits, some individually wrapped tea bags and all the keys, instruction manuals etc.

Received a box of manuals, the parish magazine, a list of useful numbers (cleaner, gardener etc, none of whom we can afford) and a card with a welcome message. They took the mechanism that opened the garage door and an extra 5k thanks to some shifty dealing so a bottle of wine would have been nice.

Appreciated the clean house and loo rolls though, esp as the previous house we got left an unflushed turd in the downstairs loo and a bunch of junk in the loft and behind the shed.

oceanbleu · 17/10/2022 14:13

Ours left us with 2 inch thick grease in the oven as a gift as well as a disgustingly dirty house as a gift. So that was lovely.

GrouchyKiwi · 17/10/2022 14:24

We left a bottle of wine and a box of chocolates.

Our sellers left us with their £1000s of debt on the pre-payment electricity meter.

mondaytosunday · 17/10/2022 14:37

Yes it is @DenholmElliot1. At least I've always left a bottle of something or a bunch of flowers, plus a welcome card and a page detailing when the rubbish and recycling goes out, a few useful numbers (plumber etc).
The last house I bought had been empty for four months (owners moved abroad years ago and had rented it out) so no present for me, and one time I was left, according to the estate agent, 'a generous box of cleaning products' only to find a disgusting sticky mess of half used bottles which went straight in the bin (and no light bulbs and filthy carpets).
But I'm a nicer person and moving is stressful enough so like to welcome the new owners.

Haggisandchips · 17/10/2022 14:54

A folder of user manuals for the white goods they wanted, list of local tradesmen we used/ bin days etc. When they were "straightforward" buyers also a bottle of prosecco and a "new home" card. "Challenging" buyers/nitpickers just got the folder!
We even got flowers for the estate agent when we sold last time as our buyers were sadly nitpicking dickwads!

eurochick · 17/10/2022 14:58

We left a bottle of fizz, a card and instruction manuals, note about bin collections, etc.

Rollingdownland · 17/10/2022 15:00

beguilingeyes · 17/10/2022 13:47

We left a bottle of prosecco and a card. My husband left a bunch of tiny plastic ducks in places where they would still be finding them months later. Our buyers were lovely people.

Why?!

girlmom21 · 17/10/2022 15:05

Ours were arseholes in the end so I took the champagne with us that we were going to leave for them Smile

alak · 17/10/2022 15:06

I left a card, bottle of Prosecco and a note advising which key was which!

HighlandPony · 17/10/2022 15:12

Does a washing machine, a gas cooker, a fridge and a freezer count? They had a fully fitted kitchen in their last place and didn’t have any white goods. We were planning on taking them to a charity shop anyway because they wouldn’t fit in our house, well the washing machine would have but the fridge and the freezer were under counter ones and the gas cooker was tall with an eye level grill and would have needed disconnecting but left them anyway because it saved me shifting them and they were a young family buying their first place so short on cash and we’ve been there.

Fuddyduddy2 · 17/10/2022 15:21

Yes we did. A pot plant, card and some money for a take away. They were fab buyers though, never messed us round or tried to renegotiate and we’re very patient while we found our onward purchase. If they had been dicks I wouldn’t have. We also had the house professionally cleaned for them and ended up moving into a house where our vendors clearly had just packed up MOST of their shit and left, leaving years of filth behind. Would do it again though!

JaninaDuszejko · 17/10/2022 15:21

We didn't leave a gift (we did clean) because our buyers were a nightmare. They repeatedly threatened to pull out of we didn't reduce the cost and it all culminated in the whole chain having to delay our move by a month because they failed to transfer their funds from their previous country of residence in sufficient time to get them cleared.

We bought our current house from such a nice couple (the woman ended up teaching DS the next year) and they left the house spotless and left us a card and a bottle of fizz. It was such a different experience.

FourChimneys · 17/10/2022 15:27

We left flowers, chocolates and a teddy bear as they were expecting a baby a few weeks later. Plus info on the house and village.

Our sellers left us dog poo on the front lawn, various structural nightmares and general filth. We gutted it, extended it and vastly improved it. They heard about this from neighbours they were still in touch with. Two years later they wrote to us saying they regretted selling and would we sell it back now it was better. Utterly bonkers.

Sniffypete · 17/10/2022 15:33

The seller left a jug with flowers in, but also took all the lightbulbs, toiletseat (not too bothered about that one), loo roll holder, towel rail etc. curtain pole, light fittings and hadn't cleaned since our offer was accepted.

The light fittings and curtain poles would have been fine if they weren't wrenched from the wall leaving loads of damage.

BananaCocktails · 17/10/2022 15:39

I’ve heard of people binning gifts
save your money

MightyOaks · 17/10/2022 18:04

Goldmember · 17/10/2022 12:54

Yes, a bottle of prosecco, some chocolates and dog treats (her dogs were her babies). Along with a welcome letter with info of local amenities.

We didn't get anything but stress off our sellers.

Awwww doggie treats! That's such a lovely thought 🐾
