Hey lovely peope

We were offered a direct let from council of 2 bedroom house, its been 2 weeks we haven't heard back from them
I am finding it bit unusual, is this normal to not veiw property after being offered for this long?

We are in a EA from 3 months, and cant wait to move out

Thanks

Is it a direct let (i.e. a fixed term tenancy of a property that doesn’t belong to the council but which they lease from the landlord and then sun-let to you) or a direct offer of a council property?

If the latter, in many LAs a direct offer means you get one offer, and if you refuse it they consider their duty towards you discharged - hence they consider no point offering you a viewing of it and are expecting you to accept. Check your LA’s policy on this.

If the former - and indeed, either which way - then you need to be proactive and contact them to find out what the next steps are.

Hi

Yes its a council property and they are giving it on a direct offer,we have already accepted the offer as they asked us to accept it or refuse it without viewing,we are in a need so we accepted that but after accepting they didn't update us on anything (viewings etc)

It's really not unusual for it to take weeks or even months. But an offer is not always guaranteed. Our council offer properties to rent as soon as the 4 week notice is given. Then the keys are returned and the surveyor goes in and decides what needs to be done. If ours been occupied by the same people for over ten years then often they will replace the kitchen and bathroom, touch up plastering, fix windows/does etc. Then it has to go back to the surveyor to be signed off. Then you will have the keys within a few days. In my county it can take anywhere from 4 weeks to 6 months. The only time we would not be offered a viewing is if we were in urgent need/classed as homeless as they allocate you a property and you can't refuse it ( so no point in viewing when you have to take it).

It could be that the place wasn't ready to let yet, needed some work. Or they might've forgotten you. Just give them a call.

Yeah just accept it, you can manage without a bath, it's maybe not ideal but there is somewhere for the kids to wash and in plenty of other countries places don't generally have baths anyway. If you refuse you may not be offered another place

Jlos · 01/12/2022 22:06

@Bluerisotto i know I’m being stupid I’m having a fight with myself it’s near to kids schools aswel just the wet room is putting me off but I can’t be picky as I’m in homeless band I suppose I could always fit a bath at a later date x

bluefoxcub · 01/12/2022 22:11

Hello, we also have a wet room. We use a fold up paddling pool for a bath. They come in different sizes.

parietal · 01/12/2022 22:14

as above, you can get a folding plastic bath that sits in the shower area of the wet room. and once kids are over age 5, they will learn to use the shower.

Jlos · 01/12/2022 22:15

@bluefoxcub did it put u off when u viewed the house? I’m imagining it to be dead old and dirty x

Jlos · 01/12/2022 22:16

@parietal would u accept it ? Sorry just need advice

ComtesseDeSpair · 01/12/2022 22:19

If I was homeless or in insecure housing then I wouldn’t turn down a secure home simply because it didn’t have exactly the right kind of bathroom I wanted. As above posters say, small DC can bath in a portable tub and once they’re a bit older showers are much more convenient anyway.

Different in my case, the wet room was installed for me as I am unable to get in and out of a bath. Originally the toilet was separate to the bathroom and not much room so actually better now. However when we viewed I was pregnant, homeless and in temporary accommodation, so I just wanted somewhere to live.xx

Jlos · 01/12/2022 22:44

@bluefoxcub could I put a bath in there under the level access shower? X

parietal · 02/12/2022 09:29

YES - definitely accept it. a council house is like gold dust. the bath/wet room situation is an easy fix.
