We are moving soon and wondered what was the done thing re the new occupants of our home. Does everyone leave a gift and what would you suggest apart from champagne? Thanks.

No gift, but we did hoover and clean really well so they weren't having to clean as soon as they arrived.

The person we bought from left us an A4 sheet with all the important info on like bin days, what the random switches are in the cupboard, how to programme the boiler etc. This was more appreciated than a bottle of wine or chocolates.

Good luck with your move.

RHOAD · 24/08/2022 12:54

When we first purchased we got a massive bottle of champagne and 2 champagne glasses from the previous owners. We're selling that same house now and I plan to leave a bottle of wine and some assortments of snacks, nothing expensive but its a nice gesture.

NorthFaceofthelaundrypile · 24/08/2022 12:55

We left a house plant and bottle of champagne.
We were left a broken boiler and ongoing debt collection issues!

girlmom21 · 24/08/2022 12:59

We didn't leave any gifts but left notes with useful instructions and information.
We had the same left for us, and the manuals for built in appliances which was really handy.

FASDE1517 · 24/08/2022 13:02

We are planning to leave a bottle of prosecco and nosecco for our buyers (one is pregnant) and a new house card with a nice message but also boring / helpful bits like bin info and window cleaner details.

Strokethefurrywall · 24/08/2022 13:03

Our realtor left a bottle of champagne and a 6 pack of beer.

When we sold, we left a bottle of champagne for the new owners, and a note wishing them all the best in their new home, how happy we'd been there and hoped they would be too.
The place we sold was our first married home, and it was theirs too and they were lovely.

Hyperion100 · 24/08/2022 13:04

We left the place spotless, a plant, a bottle of prosecco, a one sheeter explaining everything, best local restaurants, what plants were what and some old pics of the house we'd found.

We moved in to an uncleaned house, an absolutely filthy oven, full bins and a bunch of keys with no explanation as to what they were.

Floweryflora · 24/08/2022 13:06

Yes a welcome card and a bottle of Prosecco with a list of all useful info.

Isthisreasonable · 24/08/2022 13:07

Normally yes but the last person we sold to was a BTL landlord so we didn't. Usually leave a bottle of fizz and info on the house and local area.

When we bought this house the previous owner left all the quotes for work they had been thinking of doing, manuals for items left behind (wood burner etc) and a list of tried and trusted local tradespeople which was invaluable.

Philandbill · 24/08/2022 13:08

No, we left it clean. They failed to have their money ready on completion day and we had the most stressful twenty four hours until they sorted that out thinking that we would lose a lot of money and the house we were buying. I wish I'd left it in a huge mess for them.

SBAM · 24/08/2022 13:09

We didn’t leave anything and weren’t left anything like a gift.
Our first house the owner left all the keys with gift tag labels to explain what they all were which was helpful. They also left a hole in the bedroom radiator which they hadn’t mentioned 🙄 but obviously knew about as they’d drained the heating system.
Our current house the owner left the house filthy, but did leave a couple of big envelopes with stamps and their new address in case the mail redirect missed anything, plus menus for the local takeaways they recommended and all the paperwork for any work they’d had done on the house. They also left the estate agents brochure from when they bought the house, which is so lovely and I’ve kept the one from when we bought so that should we move we can leave that too.

When we left our first house we did label all the keys and left the paint cans with labels for which room they were in case they needed touching up, all the appliance instruction books and left a note with things like bin days.

TwittleBee · 24/08/2022 13:10

We left the new owner a movie night snack bundle for her and her daughter

DessicatedWithering · 24/08/2022 13:11

We left a clean house. We gained a clean house and an A4 binder of where things were in the house, what the neighbours were called and a list of plumbers, doctors, what the best takeaways were etc. The names of the neighbours was the most useful thing.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 24/08/2022 13:14

Always left a clean house with a folder of instruction booklets and a list of things such as when bin day is/local dr/dentist etc.
Have in turn been left - debt collection agencies turning up, garage full of crap, filthy houses, broken ovens, a neighbours security camera pointing in our bedroom window and a lottery ticket from the estate agent. (Won £2!)

DangerNoodles · 24/08/2022 13:16

Wow, you are all lovely! Our vendor left us with a filthy house, a broken boiler and a carpet moth infestation.

We left our old house spotless, despite knowing that we didn't need to because the new owners planned to do a full renovation before moving in.

Fourmoos · 24/08/2022 13:18

Thank you, such interesting replies! I think Prosecco would be the way to go. We obviously already intended to leave helpful info and keys all labelled up, plus we have a folder with guarantees for double glazing etc.

We move next week and I really hope our buyers are as lovely as some of you! We’ve met them once and they were really nice so I’ve got high hopes. To be honest, if they’ve left the house clean I’ll be happy.

Startuplife · 24/08/2022 13:20

Sellers not buyers!

SallyWD · 24/08/2022 13:20

We moved last year. I gave the place a good clean and left a card, flowers and some Prosecco. We were left a card. The house we moved in to was cleanish but dirty kitchen and filthy fridge!

AngelsWithSilverWings · 24/08/2022 13:22

I left a bottle of wine and a new hand towel and a nice set of hand wash and hand cream all gift wrapped with a card.

I also paid a cleaner to come in for two hours the day before to clean as we were packing up and then we stayed the night at my mums to keep everything nice and clean for the new owners.

The owners of the house we moved into left us a bottle of wine but a very dirty house and pile of junk in the garage.

ethelredonagoodday · 24/08/2022 13:23

We left a bottle of Prosecco and a card, plus a note of all the usual helpful info. We also left a bottle and card with our solicitor and our estate agent's negotiator, as both had been incredibly helpful when navigating our seriously horrific chain!!!

Our seller left nothing, and was still loading stuff into a tiny van, on her 3rd round trip, at 4pm on moving day, as we sat outside for ours on end with 2 kids, pets and the removal company! Gah! Anyway, all's well that ends well... eventually. 🤣

InsertPunHere · 24/08/2022 13:24

Bottle of wine and a card

EquallyDivided · 24/08/2022 13:24

No just the manuals, important info etc. While it's a nice gesture we don't drink champagne or similar and the last thing you need when moving in is flowers and plants to add to the mix.

GreenManalishi · 24/08/2022 13:25

Depends how much messing about they've done in the negotiation process! Have moved a fair few times and generally pay for an end of tenancy full top to bottom clean, make sure all keys are left and tagged so they're not working out what's what, label any switches that aren't immediately obvious and leave an info sheet with anything useful they can't easily google.

*hours on end.
