Sheffield - where to live please?

inamuckingfuddle · 09/01/2008 20:25

We are hoping to move to the Sheffield area in the next 6 months. Any tips/comments on areas? My parents live near the Botanical Gardens, Endcliffe side, so would prefer to be either north or west of the city, poss SW too. Thanks

decent primary schools also need to be a consideration

I don't live there any more but I gather it is still the case that S10/S11 postcodes are desirable - so near your parents, basically. Fulwood, Dore, Ranmoor, etc. etc. etc. Very big socio-economic divide in the city so you need to buy in the 'right' district if you don't want to be all challenging and urban.

Hulababy · 09/01/2008 20:37

Hi. I live in Sheffield and there are a few Sheffield MNetters on MN too

Where you want to live depends on lots of things, esp budget and house requirements, and how far in/out of town you want to be. Also whether you will be using public transport a lot.

I live in S10 area and really like it, although I am a bit further out than I want to be. Hoping to move close within S10 area in a couple of years time. Has good schools, good location, etc. Where you parents live, S11, is very good also.

katz · 09/01/2008 20:37

if you want good primary schools you can;t go far wrong in an S10 postcode, but then i'm possibly slightly biased.

We live in Crookes, which now has a lovely family feel to it but house prices are high. the two main primary schools the area feeds are Westways and Lydgate both of which are great school but for differing reasons. Lydgate is very academic and Westways has a lovely ethos but still preforms academically.

i guess the buig question is how big is your budget?

and once you're here you'll have to join us on one of our many meetups at the spa.

thanks, that was what I had anticipated I'd hear! Any thoughts on the villages to the outskirts?

katz we're hoping to downsize a bit, release equity and cut our mortgage payments... looking at around £250000 I guess

I lived in Swallownest and Todwick for a while when I first moved to Sheffield. I wouldn't recommend either TBH - just too far out, although great for motorway links.

We are currently in Lodge Moor, whih is about 5-6 miles out of town and it is too far out for me - and just a bit too open and windy! However it is a beautiful area right on the border of the countryside. Our neighbours who are into outdoor stuff love it.

We also looked at Dore and almost bought a house there a few years ago. But for Dore you need to be right in Dore village, not Totley side as there is a big difference in the primary schools, but also house prices too. Again - it is too far out for me anyway.

inamuckingfuddle · 09/01/2008 20:43

ooooh that's nice, like that lots, I had friends living in Crookes as students and remember it having a nice feel to it, plus close to parents without being next door!

we don't mind being out in the ssticks, we live in a village in county durham at the moment and part of me is reluctant to leave the tranquility

If you go onto some of the estate agents sites have a look at S10, S11 and maybe S17 too then for a bit further out. S10, as I said re Lodge Moor, also goes a bit further out too.

If you have transport and really do want to be more country village - look at Hope Valley area too.

Dore Village is very villagey/cosy type - has pletny of amenities but also quite a traditional type of place.

Hulababy · 09/01/2008 20:49

Broomhill is the main area that DH and I want to move to, or Crookes.

katz · 09/01/2008 20:50

Crookes is far less studenty than it used to be, a lot of its residents are like me, ex-students who lived here as students and refused to leave. I'm also suprised by how many of the uni staff live in Crookes,

Crosspool is nice as is Fulwood.

how old are you DC's?

The other thing to consider if that only schools in the Hallam ward have sixth forms, otherwise is sixth form colleges.

inamuckingfuddle · 09/01/2008 20:51

thanks hulababy

dunno what it's like these days, but when I lived there (yonks ago) you had to be careful with Broomhill. It's v. nice but buts up against a red light area. The dirty old men used to gather by the playing fields of my very well regarded, selective, academic, girls' school.

inamuckingfuddle · 09/01/2008 20:53

katz I have 4 yo twins, due to start school in sept, have seen (as in online!) nice houses in fulwood, also looked at Eyam and Grindleford for country living

Ranmoor is lovely too - quite village-y in nature whilst still being close to town.

S10 areas tend to be Broomhill, Crookes, Crosspool, Ranmoor, Nether Green, Sandygate and Lodge Moor.

S11 is more Broomhall (this can be hit and miss and depends what end you get), Netheredge (same as above), Botanical Gardens, Ecclesall, and then ,oving a bit further out again.

katz · 09/01/2008 20:53

red light district been moved on, the Uni kicked up a fuss about it and it got sorted. Broomhall is still a bit rough but has some lovely big houses

Hulababy · 09/01/2008 20:56

edam - Broomhill is fien now, lots of very nice housing there, although again I would look at exactly which part of Broomhill - it was more Broomhall that was an issue, which Broomhill merges into. But the area of Broomhill near the shops, and the junction towards A57 to Manchester is lovely location.

Red light district moved now - first moved to old Jessops hospital site, not further up, from Police Station at West Bar up to where the River Don is where the new apartments are by the river.

edam · 09/01/2008 20:56

Blimey.

Hulababy · 09/01/2008 20:57

That's the school DD will go to edam

edam · 09/01/2008 20:57

I now feel qualified to direct anyone towards the current red light area. Should anyone ask.

edam · 09/01/2008 20:59

I know! Dirty old men used to gather on the footpath by our hockey pitch. Evil PE teacher used to shout 'ignore them, girls'. It was OK for her, in her nice warm tracksuit, we were wearing those horrid tiny PE skirts and gym knickers and being flashed at.
