Sheffield - where to live please?

inamuckingfuddle · 09/01/2008 20:25

We are hoping to move to the Sheffield area in the next 6 months. Any tips/comments on areas? My parents live near the Botanical Gardens, Endcliffe side, so would prefer to be either north or west of the city, poss SW too. Thanks

LOL!

It was sad really as they moved up to the old Jessops hospital, which was the women's hospital - apparently lots of men wanting some relief after visiting their poor wives in hospital Moved on since hospital closed and moved though. Still shocked at how brazen they can be right next to the Police Station!

There are building a few there you know! Mind you police station is in the process of moving - will be on the Parkway IIRR. So maybe they will move on again too.

katz · 09/01/2008 21:05

we went to view this before christmas huge house but it is a project house but is sooooooo huge

inamuckingfuddle · 09/01/2008 21:13

its enormous! I wouldn't mind a project, but that would stretch us beyond being able to actually do anything to it I think! There are lots available in Nether Edge, how dodgy is it?

OP posts:
purpleturtle · 09/01/2008 21:17

I think Nether Edge is quite mixed. Or maybe that should be divided? Some of it is very nice, some of it is definitely not. I suspect the price would tell you.

Hulababy · 09/01/2008 21:18

Some parts are lovely, some dodgy. Generally the nearer you are to Ecclesall Road or to the old hospital site (not a new cousing development) the better.

purpleturtle · 09/01/2008 21:19

Not sure about schools in Nether Edge either. There's a CofE primary that's pretty good, but that might be it.

Hulababy · 09/01/2008 21:21

This is the Sheffield LEA's search page to find out catchment areas for your chosen postcode: here

katz · 09/01/2008 21:22

hi PT and hula!

One of DD2's nursery friends has a huge house in nether edge but i have no idea on that area.

inamuckingfuddle · 09/01/2008 21:24

am rather taken by this

Coming late to this! And what a loaded one it is too.

Basically, Sheffield suffers (more than a lot of other cities I know of) from "perception syndrome." People tell you certain areas are "better", therefore people who want to move to "better" areas move there, and so on. It's terribly ghettoised.

S10 and S11 are very popular, although they cover a plethora of sins - S10 includes Broomhall, which as Hula has said is a bit "crunchy" - has some nice Victorian villas but also utterly vile bits - and Crookes, which is friendly but rather "shabby-genteel" and has a lot of student roads. Absolutely chock-full of terraces, which form the backbone of Sheffield's housing stock. So is Hunter's Bar, in S11, which is near the trendy Ecclesall Road area, and Endcliffe Park which is where all the yummy-mummies hang out before taking their darlings to coffee-shops. More expensive are Ecclesall, where Nick Clegg hangs out, and Ranmoor.

If you are a footballer or a nouveau-riche with more money than sense, you will fit in in Dore (S17).

Under-rated, and nice if you know where to look - is S6, also to the west of the city. There's Walkley - OK, cheap and studenty and decent curry places and that sort of thing; Stannington - residential, lots of newish houses, and quite nice, but be careful which school catchment you are in. Avoid Hillsborough - supposedly on the up but still a bit drab and quite chavvy at weekends. Nicest bits of S6 are Bradfield - very rural, good schools - and Loxley, rural-suburban with a good village atmosphere and again, very good schools.

(Of course although I hate the things, if you are looking at the state primary schools with the best results, you'll inevitably go to the league tables. The one my children go to came 4th this year!)

it's a very friendly city and as a southern ex-pat I heartily recommend it!

Hulababy · 09/01/2008 21:25

The parts of Netheredge nearest Ecclesall Road use Hunter's Bar primary chool and High Storrs secondary I think.

inamuckingfuddle · 09/01/2008 21:26

thanks for school info and nether edge comments, you have all been v helpful and helped to clarify a few queries! My parents don't know of out plans yet, so we haven;t had the chance to discuss with them or to go and have a good look round yet.

inamuckingfuddle · 09/01/2008 21:29

thanks unquietdad, I'd looked at Bradfield and thought it looked rather nice, good to have an expert opinion! I was born in Rotherham, my parents livedin Sheffield til I was nearly 7 then moved to gloucestershire - didn't want to bring us up in the dirty city! They've always wanted to move back and finally managed it about 5 yrs ago

OP posts:
katz · 09/01/2008 21:30

also very similar and recently renovated redcar rd

inamuckingfuddle · 09/01/2008 21:31

UnquietDad · 09/01/2008 21:31

On Nether Edge - we have friends who live there - huge house bought for peanuts in the 80s. It's really mixed - lots of quite "arty" people live there. A bit vegetarian and handwoven if you know what I mean. Good old big houses with loads of rooms, used to be cheap but it's been getting more expensive... Very near a big multicultural area which some people like and which inevitably puts others off. My friends didn't like the local school and sent all their kids to the High School (girls' independent).

inamuckingfuddle · 09/01/2008 21:31

nice katz, I like that redcar rd one

OP posts:
katz · 09/01/2008 21:34

its been on a little while too so maybe some movement on price,

that road is inbetween crookes and broomhill.

UnquietDad · 09/01/2008 21:34

Houses rarely come up in Bradfield village itself, but they often do in the surrounding rural-ish parts of S6/S35: Worrall, Oughtibridge, Loxley, Stannington, Storrs. All in the catchment for the very good Bradfield secondary (which is actually in Worrall). Bradfield itself has a thriving village life. Tennis club and dancing and all that sort of thing. Probably feels a bit more detached from the city than the other parts of S6. It feels like you are right out in the Peak, but you can be in the city centre in 20 minutes.

katz · 09/01/2008 21:35

should add similar one other end of road is on with elr for 295 with a small extension so shows that that one has potential
