Aibu to make an offer? What do people think if this house?

Surely you already know if you want to live in the area, having been and looked around, done your research about your commutes, schools if relevant, public transport etc?

You must also know whether or not you can afford it.

So all that then matters is: do you like the house? So why ask all of us?

I can’t help but feel you have an agenda here.

But, if it’s in good faith and you’re just a bit vague and don’t really care much about where you live, I think it’s a very good sized house, plenty of space, and although I don’t like the decor, I can’t see anything that I couldn’t change easily. I wouldn’t want a semi again, so for me that would count against it - but you might not think the same way. The garden room which I could use as my office would be a plus. What is it that you want/need from your home?

@EinsteinaGogo

Is this a friend's house that you have a grudge against, OP?

Doesn't sound like you have any intention of finding positives.

⬆️ 😂 Could be true!

But if you are serious:

  • My friend live in Hornchurch. They are both doctors and their kids go to private school. Like any area, you will get a mix of people.
  • I live in Essex and yes, there are some TOWIE types but I only see them driving around as surprisingly they don't seem to shop on Morrison's or send their kids to my kids school.
  • The decor is a bit grey/ silver but that's easily changed. Personally the house is a bit too 'neat' for my liking (I'd only ruin it) but it looks like a good layout.

Depending on what you need I would look rurally around Harlow/ Sawbridgeworth/ Roydon. You can get some nice places.

That's actually more Emerson park than Hornchurch and is an expensive area. Not sure what u mean by the area going downhill! I live in Hornchurch by the way Hmm

Mumof3curly · 09/04/2022 14:50

Thanks everyone. We're basically in a rush to find somewhere with a good commute to the city and believe it or not you can't get much for 800k. We don't want to move again so want a house that's fit for purpose.

Is Chelmsford worth a look?

OP posts:
BertieQueen · 09/04/2022 14:53

We prefer Chelmsford over Hornchurch.

Mumof3curly · 09/04/2022 14:54

Ah ok @BertieQueen
Can you give me some reasons pls

The lounge looks incredibly strange and possibly photo shopped in the photos. I'm not one to be put off by decor choices, but I really hate it. It's all a bit grey of course, but nothing that can't be remedied with a tin of paint.

knittingaddict · 09/04/2022 14:59

Hate the lounge, not the whole house.

Nothing a few books and paintings won't sort out! Wink

Sawbridgeworth goes into Liverpool street. Here's a detached. Nice garden.

Ah ok *@BertieQueen* Can you give me some reasons pls
Havering has gone down hill in the last few years (like many places they all have their day) Romford is now known to be rough and not somewhere I feel particularly safe in. Hornchurch and Upminster are slightly better areas but also do have their problems. Upminster station brings in a lot of people from the wider areas that cause problems. The colleges also take in a lot of students from outside the area that cause problems as well.

We prefer Chelmsford, we like the shops better and feel safe to walk around here compared to Romford. Don’t get me wrong it isn’t perfect and yes there are problems here as well but when we add it all up Chelmsford is definitely better. Also has the best of both worlds, nice city centre and country side as well on the doorstep.
I couldn’t tell you about the trains as I drive to work so am forever up and down the A12 which is a nightmare some days.

Every area has good points and bad points and everyone has their own opinion on what they prefer, this is just my view.

Brentwood is between Havering and Chelmsford which also has good transport links and some lovely areas. I would pick Brentwood/Chelmsford over Havering any day.

Mumof3curly · 09/04/2022 15:19

Really appreciate it @BertieQueen.
My dh said he read that because Upminster has the c2c you get a lot of trouble there.

Have you even viewed it? Something is quite odd in how you’re writing.

Mumof3curly · 09/04/2022 15:20

We did today yes.

If you viewed it and your husband doesn't like it then you absolutely shouldn't put an offer in, assuming you're buying the house together and aren't mid-divorce.
DeePlume · 09/04/2022 15:22

Chelmsford trains are fine and very regular into London. Been commuting on that line for years

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 09/04/2022 15:23

I don’t like the decor or the open plan downstairs but that’s a personal taste issue and pretty easily and cheaply remedied (as a % of purchase price). It looks to be in good order overall. I

scandihouse · 09/04/2022 15:24

Have you looked in Shenfield? Love Chelmsford but the commute is a lot longer and more expensive. It's very easy from Shenfield

BertieQueen · 09/04/2022 15:28

Yes, that’s correct. Haven’t heard too much recently but last year there was major problems of groups coming in from wider areas and causing problems. There was a lot of police presence for a few weeks which I think deterred them - hopefully for good. The college in ardleigh green Hornchurch had major problems also and cameras were set up on the corner of the main road. The houses behind had to have gates put up in the alley ways behind their houses a few years back.
BertieQueen · 09/04/2022 15:30

Sorry seemed to have used the word ‘problems’ a lot in my posts. Shattered today and being lazy with my replies 🤦🏼‍♀️

Mumof3curly · 09/04/2022 15:30

@BertieQueen oh dear that's not good!
