Wallpaper on one wall…?

I will be striping my bedroom and redoing the walls, ceilings and flooring. Currently I have decades of layering - artex, wallpapers, painted wallpapers and many different paint colours. To say I’m looking forward to finally having a nice, decorated room is an understatement.

I’ve never really been a fan of a feature wall but I am finding myself drawn to some of the designs by House of Hackney. I really don’t want the whole room done though. If I do it I will have a feature wall - the wall behind my bed. I can’t work out if I’m being blinded by the design and will end up hating it once it’s done OR maybe I will finally love a feature wall.

For this of you who dont like a feature wall - have you ever seen one that you thought, ‘actually - that’s not at all bad’?

I ignore decorating fashions, I don’t care about what’s in it out, I just do what I like and what’s right for our house. Two of our bedrooms have feature walls that are papered, they look lovely.

HungryGhost · 23/01/2022 12:32

I agree with you MissyB on fashions and trends! I’ve spent years living in other peoples homes with lots of different styles so I have a fairly firm idea on what works for me now - I know my style won’t be to everyone else’s taste and that doesn’t bother me in the least. I think I’m just surprised at how much I’m drawn to this combo as it’s not something I’d normally consider.

My preference is for plain brilliant white walls, ceiling and paintwork. Nothing is more elegant, timeless or restful for a bedroom. Just my opinion though.

GrapefruitPink · 23/01/2022 12:39

I have feature walls in all bedrooms.
Personally like them, find all white quite clinical so like to break it up.

I'd find that sterile and would be awaiting nurse to administer some awful treatment.

I have 3 walls of paper and one (where the wallpaper and built in bookcases are) painted in both my bedroom and snug. The colours in my wallpaper are tied in to the soft furnishings and I really like it. Opposite of white though, snug is full on William Morris arts and crafts and the bedroom is jewel type colours. I adore wallpaper though so always enjoy seeing it used.

Have you thought about flooring and curtains/blinds and bedding to tie it all together.

Which papers are you looking at?

Haus1234 · 23/01/2022 12:46

I’m not a fan of them generally but I’ve seen some nicely decorated hotel rooms with wallpaper behind the beds only. I would prefer the whole room papered in my own house though!

I think it’s just one of those trends that so many people have done badly that people (including me) write off the whole idea.

Crazykatie · 23/01/2022 12:55

It can look very good if it’s bold, I don’t like the clinical white that is in fashion today, plenty of neutral shades choose whatever you like.

MsMeNz · 23/01/2022 13:00

On one hand I don't like feature walls they look dated and I dunno and a bit ok I won't be rude any further..., but saying that it's your house you can do what you like if it makes you happy I'm sure there are elements in my house others would strongly dislike 😊

HungryGhost · 23/01/2022 13:28

I’m not an all white person personally, I do love colour and texture, particularly on an older house (although it’s not proper old, 1920’s ish).

It’s the midnight garden in multi, paint will be a mid blue, what I call a dirty blue (I guess it has some black in it). I can’t remember which one as I’ve boxed up all my sample sheets to think about the kitchen but from memory it was between Mylands Lambeth walk and a Little Greene paint. Ceiling and coving will be a LG in loft white. I had several samples of white but I think for sanity I’m sticking with that one for all rooms!

Those House of Hackney designs are beautiful. The first line on the front page of the website is ‘whether it’s for a single wall or a whole room’ so I guess people are still doing that.

I like the Artemis in black but no way could you use it on an entire room. I think it depends on the print.

The website says ‘whether it’s for a single wall or a whole room’

HungryGhost · 23/01/2022 13:57

Yes I have a sample of the Artemis in black, plus the Limerence in ink. Both really lovely. Midnight garden reminds me of my grandmothers curtains when I was little, we’d travel up to her house for school holidays as mum worked shifts. It’s an odd thing perhaps but I still remember the smell of that room and house when we arrived, usually late in the evening after a very long drive.

HungryGhost · 23/01/2022 13:58

To be honest I can’t afford to do the whole room anyway Grin

JudyGemstone · 23/01/2022 14:20

‘Limerence’ lol. Must be a mnetter working there, no-one ever says that word anywhere else!

Daisydoesnt · 23/01/2022 15:07

I love your choice of wallpaper OP but - for me - I wouldn't find it restful enough for a bedroom. It's too intense. I'd love it as a fabric but that isn't your question.

I can't bear feature walls! I'd a million times over prefer to take wallpaper round the whole room. If you love it, commit! Go the whole hog!

But here's the thing OP: it's your house, not mine or anyone else's. Do whatever gives you joy, pleasure, happiness. If you love it, it matters not a jot what we all think!

To answer your very last question - there was an episode in the most recent series of Interior design Masters where a contestant didn't do a feature wall as such but rather took the wallpaper behind the bed and then up over the ceiling. It almost created the effect of a bedhead and canopy and I thought it looked fantastic. Not exactly like this image (it went up & over the bed) but perhaps someone can find a better picture. mobear · 23/01/2022 15:43

I’ve never seen a feature wall I’ve liked.

mobear · 23/01/2022 15:48

Could you split it with a dado rail or panelling?

HungryGhost · 23/01/2022 15:48

The wallpaper will be behind the bed so when I’m in bed looking out I’ll have the plain painted walls in front of me (so hopefully restful!). I have a massive solid, dark wood sleigh bed from a stint in SE Asia many years ago, it’s a bit of a statement on its own. The paper will - I think - sit nicely behind that. I’ve been following the current (and previous) PAX wardrobe thread and the plan is to have tall pax wardrobes on either side of the bed but I’ll get a cabinet maker to come up with the doors. The room is narrow so I don’t have space for them anywhere else and they’ll bookend the bed. I think that will run along with that headboard idea Daisydoesnt. Image No 4 has exactly the dark and cozy feeling I’m hoping for, I think I can actually live with that. It will be an expensive mistake if not!

OP posts:
HungryGhost · 23/01/2022 15:55

@mobear the headboard is a solid wood about 1.3cm tall and 2m wide, it should create the same kind of feel as panelling? Tall wardrobes either side of the headboard will also break of the paper. I agree with you on feature walls normally but this thread has decided me, I’m going to go for it :)

I have a feature wallpaper wall in my bedroom and obviously I think it looks great. It's a paper I had lusted after for years (a jungly palm print) which was stupid money per roll. I could never afford to do the whole room plus it would be a bit much in my little terraced house but I wanted a little bit of luxury in my life and now I have it. It makes me very happy.

MissyB1 · 23/01/2022 17:25

Our feature wall is behind our bed. Will attach pic.
