How much was your 6x6.3m extension to watertight?

whataboutbob · 23/01/2022 16:30

Kudos for the paint job @HappyBackHome, I also like to do as much as I can myself it’s good to have some input and keep costs down where possible

HappyBackHome · 23/01/2022 19:18

Just shy of £30k, initial estimate was £22-25k, but we added a few extras and then material costs (particularly the wood for the hip roof to match the existing) went up rather a lot too…

HappyBackHome · 23/01/2022 19:20

Thanks @whataboutbob, we are doing as much as we can ourselves to try and save money and because we (mostly!) enjoy it! I think we probably have the smallest budget of everyone on here…Grin

whataboutbob · 23/01/2022 19:28

No the smallest budget is me! Surprised I haven’t been blocked from this site for being a lightweight. Got kitchen fitters bill today it was £8000 and a bit, considering it was such a tricky site I think that was ok, he also straightened out the floorboards and prepped the flooring for the vinyl. And did some electrical work.
Here’s the pics so far, flooring goes in in about 10 days then we’re done 😊 . Not as lust worthy as some of the gorgeous creations on this thread but I’m happy. The last pic is the “before” picture.

@HappyBackHome I'm so impressed, we are useless DIYers

@whataboutbob that is looking fantastic!

HappyBackHome · 23/01/2022 23:00

Thanks @Callmejudith, we’re both quite handy and like a challenge so that’s good (especially as we really don’t have the funds to pay someone else to to do all of it…Grin. One day we will have the house of our dreams, and as we are NEVER moving again, it doesn’t matter how long it takes!

Loving your blue cupboards @whataboutbob and so pleased for you that you’re reaching the final straights! Smile

NewHouseNewMe · 23/01/2022 23:41

Chapeau to you @HappyBackHome! I am really impressed with your DIY skills. I find I’m exhausted by the end of the working week so would never get around to it!
@whataboutbob - the blue is lovely! Such a great difference on the before photo. How did your fitter find the ikea kitchen? I’ve heard some say they’re a doddle and others say that they’re hard because they expect to go flush to the wall as that’s how they work in Scandinavia. What do you think?

Bumtum126 · 24/01/2022 10:04

I think the blue is the wrappingGrin

NewHouseNewMe · 24/01/2022 10:23

Duh! I knew that & had even commented on how restrained she was in not peeling them off.
I can only put it down to stress!!

HopelessOptimistism · 24/01/2022 11:46

Hi everyone, I will also lurk about here if that's ok Smile

We are at the very early stages of a complete house renovation plus single storey extension. We've picked our architect but won't get design work started until Spring, so working towards a possible build start date in Autumn if we're lucky!? Also need to figure out where to get the rest of the finances before then Confused

So great to see so many on here in a similar boat, I am also overwhelmed by our potential project but the house (big sd Victorian in need of tlc) needs the work and we think it will be incredible afterwards (that's the hope anyway!).

V interesting to see other budgets/costs too - we've been told £300k minimum so hoping it doesn't go much above that!!

wonkylegs · 24/01/2022 12:11

Arggghhh
Joiner has Covid so more delays
At least the electrician is going to connect the internet today so I can work.

PoshWatchShitShoes · 24/01/2022 12:12

@whataboutbob I'm so impressed with your patience with the blue plastic!!!! I've been unwrapping stuff and taking off plastic so quickly...then the foreman goes around protecting it all again 😂

All of my lights are now like this ⬇️

Oh that's a bugger @wonkylegs. My guys are finally all back to site. Plumber looks half dead with it, but I don't care about contagion as we all had Christmas covid.

Hope your trades all stay well!!

GardensandGrandDesigns · 24/01/2022 12:33

Chased the architect on the building regs and someone from the office said they are running behind their expected 4-5 weeks and seemed a bit surprised I had a builder booked for April. We confirmed the architect in July - I feel like 9 months is more than patient!

Callmejudith · 24/01/2022 13:38

I’ve just been to a fabric warehouse closing down sale and got the most beautiful blue velvet about 6m for £20! No clue what I’m going to do with it though

Can I join please, I have lurked the last two extension threads. I started a single extension and full house and garden renovation in October - hopefully aiming to move in June this year. @Sewfrickinamazeballs I am about one stage ahead of you: The foundations at the start of the year, then the foundations last week, the orange pipe in the middle is where my island is going!!! the last one is the old kitchen - going to be a wet room and new hallway.

Whole house is being rewired, redecorated, replumbed and all decorated. Very excited first big project i have ever done - may be my last Grin

Ooh, exciting! That's a huge space! Will that be a kitchen?

Sewfrickinamazeballs · 24/01/2022 16:09

Sorry, just reread that your island will go there! Must be exciting to see the position, even at this early stage!

Callmejudith · 24/01/2022 16:12

@plumstone that's going to be amazing!

OP posts:
plumstone · 24/01/2022 16:16

Yes that space was a living room, conservatory and odd lean too out the back of the main house, will become a utility room, storage cupboard and kitchen/dining room, critical style doors and windows at the back leading onto the garden.

@Callmejudith i really hope so - right now it just freaks me out!!
@Sewfrickinamazeballs yes!! but when i asked the builder what's that pipe for, he looked at me and went "your island, you do still want one don't you" !!!!

Sewfrickinamazeballs · 24/01/2022 16:23

Couple of questions for you wise folk

  1. For those extending (and have finished), have you got your builder to do the landscaping also (new patio mainly) or got someone else to do it afterwards?
  1. Bathroom tiles. Love chevron style bathrooms with blue/green rectangular tiles (dark grout) in the shower and lighter elsewhere, but wondering if larger format grey/beige types would be better in the long term
  1. Going to have a back to wall bath. Here's the dilemma, deck mounted or wall mounted taps? Would like a shower head on the bath for rinsing and cleaning but don't want a hose hanging in the bath, so deck mounted allows for a retractable one, but love the clean look of wall mounted taps (are they a pain if you have leaks?), and don't think wall mounted retractable shower hoses exist.
  1. Digital showers. Anyone got one? Anyone know the pros and cons?

You can clearly see I'm in 'bathroom' mode at the momentGrin

LimpLettice · 24/01/2022 17:41

We are not finished, @Sewfrickinamazeballs but our builder has prepared the ground for our patio and we will lay it. Just makes their ground parking easier and cleaner I think.

@plumstone Wowsers! That will be something all right!

Our internal walls (were external until last week) are all coming down tomorrow and Wednesday. It's all happening fast now. Our Crittall style doors are still a couple of weeks away so they are sticking a stud wall in the gap to try to warm us up as it's going to be mighty cold!

LimpLettice · 24/01/2022 17:42

Ground work not ground parking, bloody iPhone.

Callmejudith · 24/01/2022 17:50

I can answer a couple of those

  1. No, we ran out of money. But I'd also rather have an "expert" for the landscaping
  1. Get the tiles that you love!
  1. Taps I'm not sure, I love wall mounted but not sure about the shower
