Unexpected nice thing you realised about your house after moving in

In the middle of a town very close to where we used to live, but the back garden is at such an angle from streetlights that’s it’s like a little dark sky area. The stars are great.

Fantastic draw on the chimney.

The water pressure is amazing.

It had sea views

whyohwhyohwhyohwhywhy · 20/01/2022 06:56

The utility room gets the sunshine and dries the laundry really quickly

The house has a gorgeous feel about it

dudsville · 20/01/2022 06:58

This is a silly one, but the under stair cupboard was an incredibly useful space and had a special hook for the ironing board.

A more serious one was we hadn't realised the internal walls were brick. As a result the sound proofing is amazing.

grafittiartist · 20/01/2022 06:58

On moving day in last house we found a remote control- turned out to be for an electric garage door- brilliant surprise!

This house- fabulous neighbours

Ovenaffray · 20/01/2022 07:04

The walls are all brick. As with a pp the soundproofing is great.

It’s a man older terrace and the font halls are next to each other so again we never hear the neighbours tv. There’s an alley between us and the other side and we never hear them either. Coming from a modern semi where I literally heard them open the fridge and could hear their tele it’s been a escalation.

*revalation

Indecisivelurcher · 20/01/2022 07:07

That I can hear the Abbey bells and geese flying over!

Ovenaffray · 20/01/2022 07:08

@Indecisivelurcher that sounds wonderful!!

UnexpectedItemInShaggingArea · 20/01/2022 07:10

It had sea views

How did you not know it had sea views before you moved in? That's usually line one of the estate agent particulars!

Porthia · 20/01/2022 07:11

Previous flat in zone 2 in London on a busy road - when you stood at the sink looking out the window at the back of the building you could only see trees, gardens and the spire of a church - we could have been living in the country!

This house - the garden is a real sun trap (sw facing) and no other houses can see into it at all!

Quantity5 · 20/01/2022 07:12

Neighbours are the best

RampantIvy · 20/01/2022 07:14

Sunny back garden
Roomy under stairs cupboard
Light and airy
Quiet
Lovely neighbours
Only 5 minutes from the station
In a village so only a very short walk to open countryside
Great village pub
Only an easy 10 minute drive to the motorway
Outstanding primary school in the village
Lovely community feel

I sound like an estate agent here Grin

Firstshoes · 20/01/2022 07:14

Cows graze in the field right outside our house. We thought it was just a field until we woke up on the first morning

ShadowPuppets · 20/01/2022 07:16

How quiet it is. It’s not near any main roads which was a massive draw for us, but I don’t think I really appreciated the lack of noise until I was in the house on my own with the windows open for the first time. In our bedroom all you can hear is birdsong. Having moved from a London flat on a main road it’s a revelation.

Annoyingly we’re going to have to move soon, which pisses me off because I love this house but unexpected baby means we need more space. I have said to DH I dream of next door (who are lovely!) just disappearing and giving us their half of the semi so that we can knock through. DH tells me not to hold my breath Grin

Snow1n · 20/01/2022 07:22

The birdsong in the area is beautiful, sometimes we turn everything off and just listen. It's very calming.
We've also put out a feeder and within a day had a pair of doves in the garden and even teenage ds is becoming a mini bird watcher!

ExtremelyDetermined · 20/01/2022 07:22

Ours faces south east with an open outlook. Been here 20 years and never tire of opening the front door to beautiful winter sunrises.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 20/01/2022 07:27

We can hear an owl at night, and the ecalyptus tree that overhangs from next door smells amazing in the summer.

It is very well insulated and the fuel bills are a fraction of what they were in the old house.

The local schools are brilliant. We weren’t going to have dc when we bought the house, so that is a great bonus now we have 2!

DaisyWaldron · 20/01/2022 07:31

Are walls not normally brick? I've only ever lived in older terraces, and they've always had internal brick walls, apart from a couple of badly converted student houses. If that's unusual, maybe it explains why some people on MN are so insistent that terraced houses are a nightmare, whereas I've always found them quieter than a lot of new builds.

LemonViolet · 20/01/2022 07:32

Original 1930s Art Deco pattern brass handles on all of the upstairs doors, even a spare one in a box in the garage (at some point they would have combined separate bath/toilet into one room, must have come from that door). Hadn’t noticed them on the one viewing we were allowed (covid-style, ushered round quickly, no touching or loitering!)

Annabelle69 · 20/01/2022 07:34

That I have Hedgehogs. I straight away made proper "Hedgehog Highways" on all garden boundaries (holes under or through fencing). This is so they can travel freely.

The water pressure is great, my neighbours are lovely, my garden is full of wild herbs, the fireplace looks so pretty lit at night, my cupboard under the stairs is so big I can fit 2 mountain bikes in there.

WhosThatBehindTheFlask · 20/01/2022 07:34

The water pressure is awesome and the boiler very good = good hot showers for all.

You access the road via another road which has no houses or pavement, is just lined with a small grass verge and trees. Obviously I knew that when I bought it but only afterwards have come to appreciate how welcoming your own 'tree lined avenue' is in all seasons.

Similarly when you approach the house on foot from the other direction it's framed with the village in the distance and the church is a particular focus point. Makes the road look lovely and old worldy.

Oh and it has a hidden wine fridge GrinGrin

DaisyWaldron · 20/01/2022 07:37

I love the sturdiness of my house, and the south facing warm garden, and the local schools, and that we were able to extend it rather than move, and my best friend bought a house two streets away, and the smallest bedroom is so warm and cosy with thick walls and a South facing window. And it's right next to a nature reserve that I hadn't known about when I moved in.

Musmerian · 20/01/2022 07:41

Mine is two minutes walk to the station which has made a huge difference to my commute. Fab neighbours and great community spirit, original Victorian parquet under manly carpet. Having said that it was owned by alcoholics and was absolutely filthy when we moved in - I actually cried it was so grim.

Annabelle69 · 20/01/2022 07:41

Same, but original victorian door knobs, cast iron locks and door push plates on most doors. It's funny the things you do and don't notice. I wonder if I viewed with my eyes shut sometimes.

I would definitely have been aware of a sea view though, unlike the poster above. Surely you would know your house was near the sea? Confused

ItsSnowJokes · 20/01/2022 07:43

That the neighbours are amazing. We couldn't believe how lovely they all are (and still can't!) and its a perfect balance of not being in each others faces but helping each other out when we need it.

We moved to get away from a neighbour from hell who made our lives a misery for a year (when I say a misery, I had a mental breakdown from the strain of it all, culminating in the first lockdown me not being able to leave the house as she kept saying she was going to break in and trash our place).

Karma hit her as she was evicted via bailiffs (sadly after we had moved out) and her and her child had to move far away to live with family as she was classed as making herself intentionally homeless as she refused to pay rent for 9 months (even though benefits paid the rent!) And she refused temp accommodation (they have to offer that as she has a child).
