Unexpected nice thing you realised about your house after moving in

In the middle of a town very close to where we used to live, but the back garden is at such an angle from streetlights that’s it’s like a little dark sky area. The stars are great.

Fantastic draw on the chimney.

The water pressure is amazing.

The light in the morning in the front of the house, and that the front garden is a lovely place to have a cup of tea in the sun in the early morning in sumner.

Lovely neighbours
The way the sun streams in through the windows at the back of the house
Birds nesting in the hedges in the back garden
The glorious view of the Minster when I lean out of our bedroom window!

RosieRoww · 21/01/2022 08:35

Our lovely neighbours- they are like grandparents to us and spoil our kids to the bits.

Overall good, friendly atmosphere in our street as well.

mindutopia · 21/01/2022 09:58

We are just about to complete on our dream home after many, many years of searching and purchases falling through. We went for a post-exchange handover visit with the current owners (who are so lovely, they had us for lunch and spent about 3 hours showing us around and discussing the history of the property).

There is a river that runs down one side of the property. By 'river', I mean technically it's a river, but it's like a stream that's about a foot deep. Except in peering through the brambles, we discovered there is a little waterfall and a tiny pool just below it that looks to be able 3 feet deep. I'm a wild swimmer. The first thing I'm doing after completing is launching myself into my little plunge pool!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 21/01/2022 10:19

@mindutopia, omg, wild swimmer dream (I am one too), happy dipping!

Callmejudith · 21/01/2022 10:36

Great thread.
We have lived in our house for 12 years and have just completed a kitchen extension and have only really just realised that we have an amazing view from the back garden, we only see trees and sky, no houses at all. Which is pretty rare in London zone 2!

Callmejudith · 21/01/2022 10:36

I also love sitting in DS bedroom watching the planes fly past. It was really odd during COVID to see so few planes.

garlictwist · 21/01/2022 12:32

@McScreamysGhostPants

My house was an absolute hovel when I moved in. 5 bed town house and it was filled with rubbish, had poo smeared on the walls, missing floor boards, over flowing buckets that had been used as ash trays, walls were sticky with running nicotine and the gutters where blocked with beer cans (?).

But under Neath am that was a big solid house. I've got a roof terrace on the top floor and in summer we often drag the mattress out there and sleep outside watching the stars. I love my house.

I would LOVE to have a roof terrace. It's my dream! I'd rather have that than a garden. Very jealous.

1930s semi. It’s really light even in winter due to large windows. The water pressure is great.

It just has a lovely feeling as a house, hard to explain why but im we felt it on viewing.

Chipsahoy · 21/01/2022 12:47

What a lovely thread. It’s given me warm feelings and excitement for our move to the rural life in another country (albeit still in uk) next week! So excited.

Rental House we are in now, nothing. I hate it!

But house we sold last year, trees that I barely noticed when we viewed as was too busy looking at the house. The light in the north facing room was unexpected but ended up being brightest room in the house due to elevated position and enormous window.
Bird song and pheasants and geese flying over. Lovely neighbour too.
I really really adored living there.

BasiliskStare · 21/01/2022 20:28

@Callmejudith - I was on a thread some years back - there is an app you can get and it tells you where the planes have come from an are going - witchcraft I tell you but I can see your point

Apart from tree - neighbours are lovely . Next doors oven broke down so he used ours and brought round such lovely home made bread ( inter alia ) we have such nice neighbours - a joy.

Very envious of 5 head height rooms in cellar - we do not have that.

Weenurse · 22/01/2022 08:51

We moved to a Court ( cul de sac?)
New Next door neighbour turn out to be the barman from my local pub where I lived 10 years earlier and 9 hours drive away!
Local real estate agents have been known to use the Court Christmas party as a selling tool. ( also the fact that there is a police officer and a nurse living in the court).
Neighbours are great, helpful, dog sit, baby sit etc.

SheriffCallie · 22/01/2022 10:59

How beautiful the mature cherry blossom tree in the front garden would be. When it blooms, I often pause for a minute while driving into the driveway just to appreciate it.

How well the movement of the sun would suit the garden. We can enjoy the sun at the back all day, and then in the evening a patch of the front garden lights up. It’s a good spot for watching the sun set into the hills behind the house.

The high hedges that I initially thought would be a burden are perfect for sheltering us from everything. When we close the driveway gates, we are completely secluded, and the front garden is like another back garden.

LaMariposa · 22/01/2022 11:12

Nothing so far, just endless expense and stress as we try to renovate. It has a load of positives, but none that we didn't know about already.

Scottishnewbie2022 · 22/01/2022 11:14

We had never lived in walking distance from a shop before and it’s life changing!!!!

gettingolderbutcooler · 22/01/2022 12:12

The fabulous neighbours!

Annabelle69 · 22/01/2022 16:42

That was on my deal breaker list when viewing houses "No walking distance shop, no house purchase". I appreciate if you're super rural it's unlikely, but for my kind of urban-village living it was essential. I am in walking distance (3 minutes) of a petrol station, One Stop AND a Co- op. Yes I definitely did know about this on viewing.
Annabelle69 · 22/01/2022 16:43

I'm adding a formation of geese flying over at dusk in the Summer and Bats flying around the back garden.

Lampzade · 22/01/2022 17:04

Lots of great woodland but still near London.
Best of both worlds

MrFlippersPancake · 22/01/2022 17:32

Within walking distance of a small market town centre but from the back can only see glorious open countryside 💕 the house is far from perfect, but the peace here is wonderful

MrFlippersPancake · 22/01/2022 17:33

Obviously I knew this before moving in, but didn't really appreciate how lovely the peace would be Grin

Kite22 · 22/01/2022 17:45

Are walls not normally brick?

This is what I was thinking, too Confused

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 22/01/2022 18:03

A lot of non-load bearing internal walls are stud walls ie: timber frame and plasterboard.
FleeceNavidadFromTheSheep · 22/01/2022 18:09

Deer use our road as a short cut between woodlands, after dark Smile

SheeceRearsmith · 22/01/2022 18:11

Just a silly one but my toddler was fiddling about with a little remote that we found in the kitchen and we found out it changes the lights in there to all kinds of colours! It’s like having a party in the kitchen.
