Pre paid boiler ran out of gas now wont work

Espeon17 · 04/01/2022 15:53

Hi recently my pre paid gas ran out. I checked and I had 15 credits. I know my mums boiler had the same issue where it shuts off if there are only 15 credits left. She tells me an engineer comes and does something that takes 2 seconds and its working but he never told her why. Its a Vaillant boiler I tried topping up another £10 and put the card in to release gas and gas meter shows "o" which I think means on. No gas appliances in house to check gas supply. Anyone any ideas?

Have you tried the reset button? Press it for a few seconds, then release

Thread from a few years ago which might have a solution www.mumsnet.com/Talk/property/2951262-Prepay-boiler-ran-out-of-gas-now-wont-work-even-though-topped-up

Sorry I forgot to mention I tried this a few times and it just gives me either F28 or F29 error.

Do you know how to check the pressure?

ForTheLoveOfSleep · 04/01/2022 16:29

On your gas meter there should be buttons A & B. Keep pressing A until you get an option to hold for gas

MrsReeves · 04/01/2022 16:31

Yes, I think you have to hold button A on your meter first, until you hear a 'clunk' sound, and then reset your boiler

Espeon17 · 04/01/2022 17:26

Oh i have no idea how would I do that?

The A button on my meter doeant seem to do anything. Ive tried pressing it, holding it, tapping it repeatedly and nothing happens.

If I put my card in and press B it says "hold b for gas" and ive tried that several times and it doeant seem to help.

We're not on a card or prepay meter but in November our gas meter shut down for no obvious reason - no error message, but definitely no gas coming through. We called the emergency number and Cadent arrived within 30 minutes (we live in a major city). He diagnosed a fault in the meter that had triggered an automatic shutdown. He got on the phone to request permission from our supplier to replace, and had installed a replacement meter only 30 minutes later. I was very impressed!

MrsReeves · 04/01/2022 20:52

Is it working now?

CornishTiger · 04/01/2022 20:59

Press A and hold for gas safety switch to reset.

Then
On the boiler with a fault code if
F28 or F29 there will be a reset button with a picture of a flame with a cross through it. Press this once and report back

Espeon17 · 04/01/2022 21:14

Unfortunately ive been trying all night but still no luck.

Pressing the A button and holding it does nothing.

I dont think it is anything complicated I had the same issue when I first moved in and had to call a guy out who fixed the issue in about 20 seconds. No idea what he did though.

I tried pressing the reset button and it just tries to start up several times then gives the error code again.

Can you take pictures of all the screens on the meter and post on here?

CornishTiger · 04/01/2022 21:18

You aren’t getting gas to the boiler. Has the money gone onto the meter.

CornishTiger · 04/01/2022 21:21

Ensure that all gas appliances are switched off
Press button A on your gas meter to wake the screen
Press B on your gas meter
Press and hold A until you hear the supply come on.

Then go to boiler and hold the reset button with a picture of a flame with a cross through it.

MrsReeves · 04/01/2022 21:22

Did you check the pressure?

CornishTiger · 04/01/2022 21:24

From bulb

How to fix the meter

Put your card into the meter. It should show ‘Please wait, £XX.XX on card’
(Where £XX.XX is the amount you have on the card)
Press the red A button once to turn the meter display on
Press the red A button again to bring up the ‘Hold for gas’ screen
Hold down the red A button until the meter shows ‘Release A for gas’
Let go of the red A button
It can take up to a minute before the meter beeps 3 times and the screen changes to ‘On’.

Once this is finished, press the red A button again to cycle through the screens and check any credit or debit amounts on the meter.

If you see 'Time Out' you need to keep pressing for longer.

CornishTiger · 04/01/2022 21:25

I used the manage a housing scheme. every flat had different meter types. It was a pain every time to reset it all but it can be done.

Keep trying!

CornishTiger · 04/01/2022 21:25

And also how much your emergency credit because you may not have topped up enough

TragoCardboardCopper · 04/01/2022 21:29

Can you see a make/model name on your gas meter? If yes, google how to restart your supply for your specific meter. There may be a knack for your make/model that is different to the standard process.

TragoCardboardCopper · 04/01/2022 21:32

When it said 'hold B for gas' how long did you hold it for? Did it change to any other message on the screen after a bit? I'd imagine it would have to be held down for quite a while to stop someone doing it by accident when it's shut off for a reason.

Sounds like you need to reignite or repressurise it
