Help me choose a front door colour! (Photos)

We are having our front door painted once it's warm enough. It's an Edwardian semi, and the front room windows and front door glass panels both have tinges of green in some panes.

It's currently a hot pink Confused from the previous owner. See photo. I'm considering a grey green like Farrow & Ball Mizzle or Pigeon. See photo from FB website of Mizzle. I did consider Cromarty but the interiors shop I spoke to advised colours always look a lot lighter outside, and I didn't want the front door to look too pale.

Would Mizzle go? I've always had dark doors, so is there anything I should consider regarding going for a light door?

I agree the door needs a strong colour, how about any on the page above?

Sorry I really dislike the pink, it's far too try-hard for me and I think it misses the mark and clashes with the planting scheme, a contrast would be better to offset the foliage.

Red Victorian - looks very good with a Christmas wreath

We have an Edwardian house and the door (original) gets a lot of sun so we were told to avoid dark colours. I was gutted as I love dark front doors! We went for Pigeon in the end - hopefully I've attached a photo.

Do be cautious re dark colours if your door gets sun as they absorb the sun and the wood can expand.

One day I'll have a dark door again.

Previous door was LG Hicks Blue which I also really liked.

@Goatsdorhone could I possibly ask to see a photo?

@JW13 I absolutely love it! I like Pigeon a lot and hadn't thought about wood expansion. Is that a big problem for south-facing doors?

@jamandmarmaladethesecondcoming could you please explain this comment:

I would not recommend a strong green against red brick unless it was a Victorian house.

Why not?

Thanks everyone for photos of your beautiful doors 😍

That purpley pink does not look right with red brick , sorry to the pink lovers. A peachy pink like Pink Ground or Setting Plaster could look fab I think.

Personally I would go dark blue/grey or dark green. There’s a red brick Victorian house near me with Studio Green front door - looks fab. Railings is also great. Or Squid Ink by Paint & Paper Library.

@KrispyBrussels

Really don't see the point of a pale door that will show dirt.
To stop people walk-in in & stealing stuff or murdering you in your bed?!
JW13 · 03/01/2022 22:05

@mimos4 that's what our stained glass person told us! And he worked for one of the big/pricy front door companies before setting up on his own.

I wasn't a fan of paler doors but I do like pigeon and we tested about 30 colours including Mizzle and Cromarty (they look v different in the bright sun).

It does show the dirt but only takes a quick wipe down....

mimos4 · 03/01/2022 22:08

@JW13 tell me more about the testers you did! How did Cromarty and Mizzle look?

I'm tossing up Pigeon and Green Smoke. I think no to dark blue - I want something to tie in the green windows. Otherwise I'll just go black.

@mimos4 Hopefully this works! (F&B Card Room Green)

@Goatsdorhone well that's just beautiful. Which direction does it face? Also I feel like I've seen it in my google searches!

The pink is lovely.

JW13 · 03/01/2022 22:38

@mimos4 I love green smoke and wish I'd painted a room with it!

Here are 6 of the testers. We have quite bright green tiles in the porch so wanted to tone with them as well. Mizzle was too yellow-y and Cromarty was too light. The pigeon sample looks darker than it looks on the door but I think that's because we get so much light (also south facing front door).

@givethatbabyaname

The pale, muted F&B colours work just fine for an annexe, side door, back door, door to guest cottage etc. they don’t work for a suburban front door imo. These doors need bold colours. The blues and blacks are miserable on bright sunny days. I’d be going for a jewel toned colour, a ruby or emerald or amethyst colour.
I don't think the Emerald colours go with red brick 🤷🏻‍♀️

Hi, because Victorian period liked strong definite colours and would decorate accordingly. Bold reds, black, dark green, dark blue.

Edwardians were softer in their taste using muted colours e.g along the lines of Mizzle you picked. Edwardian architecture was more understated, less ornate/striking than Victorian.

I think you are looking for a smoky hue.

jamandmarmaladethesecondcoming · 03/01/2022 23:25

@mimos4

As the respective doors of wonkylegs and JW13 illustrate beautifully.

Davros · 04/01/2022 00:03

I think your colours are all wrong for an Edwardian house with (original?) stained glass. You should go traditional which I think is gloss black, dark or bright red, very dark green, very dark blue.

KloppsTeeth · 04/01/2022 00:22

What about that muddy grey colour that seems to be quite popular?

I have a grey composite front door, when it needs changing I really fancy going to a pumpkin orange colour or egg yolk yellow.

Thank you! We are East facing so it gets the morning sun only. It was a dark grey when we moved in which did look good too but the door needed some TLC so we changed it up after refurbing.

Policyschmolicy · 04/01/2022 07:59

@Goatsdorhone proves my point entirely about the colours appearing much more washed out outdoors. Card room green is quite an intense colour inside, but that door looks muted and beautiful.

Goatsdorhone · 04/01/2022 09:19

@Policyschmolicy Definitely-it is much lighter outdoors.

665TheNeighbourOfTheBeast · 04/01/2022 09:24

Very high gloss black. With the brass polished and lacquered would be very timeless and attractive.

HeronLanyon · 04/01/2022 10:27

This absolutely beautiful door - I presume they are waiting fir the undercoat to dry !?
Just makes it all look washed out and doesn’t allow the glass to shine.
Imagine this black with brass.
Apols if anyone here owns this door. All subjective.
