Help me choose a front door colour! (Photos)

We are having our front door painted once it's warm enough. It's an Edwardian semi, and the front room windows and front door glass panels both have tinges of green in some panes.

It's currently a hot pink Confused from the previous owner. See photo. I'm considering a grey green like Farrow & Ball Mizzle or Pigeon. See photo from FB website of Mizzle. I did consider Cromarty but the interiors shop I spoke to advised colours always look a lot lighter outside, and I didn't want the front door to look too pale.

Would Mizzle go? I've always had dark doors, so is there anything I should consider regarding going for a light door?

What a gorgeous frontage, I'd go for a bright yellow or a bright teal, or a super shiny black with beautiful hardware. Anything that can hold its own and not fight with the red brick.

HeronLanyon · 03/01/2022 16:18

I like the purple better sorry. The washed out anaemia greyish one just looks dull to my eye. I love a black door or midnight green or another strong colour.

wonkylegs · 03/01/2022 16:28

I'd go for a proper green with that style door and surroundings
Like little greene dark brunswick green

@ivykaty44 I love that shade! I've always been drawn to more muted shades like that and Mizzle rather than bold and dark. Our house is a mix of whites like School House White and Strong White inside, to give you an idea.

@jamandmarmaladethesecondcoming thank you for all that - I'll have a good look!

I'm really sorry but I don't like peacock or purples. I'm also considering Cardroom Green.

A very deep, bright green?
Or black to highlight the tiles?

SilverGlassHare · 03/01/2022 18:34

@mimos4

I don't follow trends by the way, and don't care if something looks 'dated' or 'current'. That doesn't matter at all to me. Thank you for the comments that a bold colour makes more sense for suburban front doors, and muted colours are better for country cottages. That makes sense.
I’m with you on this - couldn’t ever care less what’s current or dated! We have a red front door because it makes me feel cheerful when I see it. I’d personally avoid Mizzle because I think it would be quite drear but if you like the colour, you should go for it.
mimos4 · 03/01/2022 18:34

If I use black, should I go for gloss?

Following becAuse we have a very similar front that needs painting. I agree it can take something bolder that the muted pale f&b colours

MyGreenTutu · 03/01/2022 18:45

@Thoosa

You need something strong enough to hold its own against the red brick. Maybe a green or blue?
This, but I am not keen on the pink as I think it clashes with the red bricks.
KatyAnna · 03/01/2022 18:48

I would go for a darker green. Looking at Farrow and Ball, I like the Calke green and the duck green, although the latter is quite dark indeed.

FuzzyPuffling · 03/01/2022 18:57

I once had a front door in F&B "Monkey Puzzle" (red brick Victorian cottage) It was my favourite front door colour ever.

PoshWatchShitShoes · 03/01/2022 19:06

I'll join you in hating the pink door!!

We've just changed our front door and the new one is Hague Blue. Super happy with how well it goes with red brick and also Wimborne White windows.

mimos4 · 03/01/2022 19:22

Could I possibly ask to see some Edwardian and Victorian front doors to help me with this?

And of course Georgian front doors if you're baller and have a Georgian 😍

I've tried to crop out a lot of scaffolding. The white edging is tape, so the HB goes up against the red brick

I love in Georgian street where all are black mid sheen not gloss. I think actually required to be black - hence my liking the purple no doubt !

Chattercino · 03/01/2022 19:46

What a stunning house. I love it as it is.

Policyschmolicy · 03/01/2022 19:50

We chose paint colours for our windows and door this summer. What I will say is that all of those seemingly deep and pigmented F&B colours look very muted and sludgey outside. We ended up choosing a dulux colour that has a lot more oomph and is perfect (it’s still a soft greeny grey). We used Hague blue for the front door.

jamandmarmaladethesecondcoming · 03/01/2022 20:10

@mimos4 you are welcome.

I know this sounds odd but it wouldn't be the first time i have taken in a colour match of what the intended paint would be against whether it be one of the house bricks, curtains/lampshade into F&B to hold it against one of their paint tiles.

Always hold he tile and adjunct colour to the shop's day light window. Ask the assistant which direction the shop window faces. Yes i have done this and yes it is important.

All F&B paints and their respective undercoats and the front door itself is a big job and expense so it is worth getting it right.
I once bought 14 testers deciding for our half South facing & half no natural light integral hallway. Tricky. (went for Matchstick in the end because it leads into All White in the kitchen, Dimity in the front room and Oxford Stone in one bedroom).

I would not recommend a strong green against red brick unless it was a Victorian house.

jeepersdeepers · 03/01/2022 20:20

Bright

jamandmarmaladethesecondcoming · 03/01/2022 20:22

@mimos4 p.s alternatively, you could tankr the F&B chart outside your front door and only hold all the bottom row of all colours against the brickwork. That will give you an indication of the tone you are after to help you narrow down a shade. You'll soon know which work and which don't.

Try and do it on a dull/wet weather day so you will know what will look best on your front door to help show case your front door to your home even during inclement weather. When it is sunny everything looks wonderful - not so when it's overcast or mid February!

Woodlandarchitect · 03/01/2022 20:27

@mimos4 Grey is fading in popularity very quickly so I would recommend a Dutch blue, navy blue or a shade of teal Smile

Black always looks good!

Wineandroses3 · 03/01/2022 20:29

Hot pink by miles

NinaProudman2022 · 03/01/2022 20:33

I also love the pink door. The other colour looks bland and insipid in comparison

If you want to change how about a very bright yellow, racing green, arsenic green or a cadburys purple?

Goatsdorhone · 03/01/2022 20:41

We have F&B Card Room Green on our front door (also Edwardian) - it's quite subtle but not too pale.
