Help me choose a front door colour! (Photos)

We are having our front door painted once it's warm enough. It's an Edwardian semi, and the front room windows and front door glass panels both have tinges of green in some panes.

It's currently a hot pink Confused from the previous owner. See photo. I'm considering a grey green like Farrow & Ball Mizzle or Pigeon. See photo from FB website of Mizzle. I did consider Cromarty but the interiors shop I spoke to advised colours always look a lot lighter outside, and I didn't want the front door to look too pale.

Would Mizzle go? I've always had dark doors, so is there anything I should consider regarding going for a light door?

The door panels have all sorts of colours, so none stands out above the rest. The windows to the left are very green to my eyes, as are first floor windows.

The pale, muted F&B colours work just fine for an annexe, side door, back door, door to guest cottage etc. they don’t work for a suburban front door imo. These doors need bold colours. The blues and blacks are miserable on bright sunny days. I’d be going for a jewel toned colour, a ruby or emerald or amethyst colour.

The bright pink is absolutely lovely, such a shame you want to get rid of it.

That door needs a strong, bright colour. If you really can't stand the pink, then pillar box red, royal blue or strong deep green would be my suggestions.

All of the colours you have suggested so far have been dull and rather dated! Not appropriate for the period of the property, and no longer current. You really need to avoid any shades of greys/greiges/sage greens etc.

If you really want something unremarkable that doesn't stand out, then at least go a bit more timeless and go for gloss black.

Pbbananabagel · 03/01/2022 15:24

The green you picked would work best I think if you really don’t want blue - darker colours won’t date and are in keeping with the age and style of the house.

mimos4 · 03/01/2022 15:27

I don't follow trends by the way, and don't care if something looks 'dated' or 'current'. That doesn't matter at all to me. Thank you for the comments that a bold colour makes more sense for suburban front doors, and muted colours are better for country cottages. That makes sense.

Like the pink too.

How about turqouise?

jamandmarmaladethesecondcoming · 03/01/2022 15:28

Most of our home is decked out in Farrow & Ball paint.

Always helpful to factor in the natural light when picking a shade and tone. Does your front door face South or South-East etc?

stuntbubbles · 03/01/2022 15:33

How about Bancha by F&B – it’s sort of a garish olive green but nicer than that sounds – or Jewel Beetle by Little Green, a more standard olive. Definitely not the ghostly pale colour.

mimos4 · 03/01/2022 15:36

It's south-facing.

You need a period colour I reckon - bottle green, darkish blue, deep red or maroon or black.

Anything remotely fashionable now just won't look right at all.

Mischance · 03/01/2022 15:39

Love the pink!

Grey is all the rage now and it will date quickly. I am on a new estate of 7 houses and all the doors are grey - boy is it dull!!

jackstini · 03/01/2022 15:50

Studio Green or Hague Blue I think would be bold enough, maybe Inchyra Blue if you like a gray tone

Agree you can't go with a wishy washy colour for a period front door

kitcat15 · 03/01/2022 15:55

Much much prefer the pink....the other one is non descript and boring

kitcat15 · 03/01/2022 15:56

@mimos4

Haha oh no, everybody loves the pink! I just can't bear the pink for some reason. I get that Mizzle is boring... but I don't want to pick something that's bold and amusing now but will need changing in a couple of years' time as we get sick of it.
We paint our front door every couple of years....always bold colours .... when we get fed up, we re paint
isitfree · 03/01/2022 15:57

South facing avoid anything on the red spectrum. You are right to ditch the pink. I would pick from the blue/green palette.

I would avoid a strong colour to avoid it becoming bleached by the sun too quickly.

However some muted colours like Mizzle on an Edwardian door may look lovely on a cottage door but not suit your lovely Edwardian door leaving it looking Utilitarian and you may end up with a drab door.

F&B have an Edwardian collection under their section called Eras www.farrow-ball.com/eras?gclid=Cj0KCQiA2sqOBhCGARIsAPuPK0jVeopvh8F8d5RH9tQVXfMOFpxnkns3FbjlNj050SLa-bbdqfN_haQaArFOEALw_wcB

Skylight (which appears cold on screen but on your South facing door would be light and warm and welcoming)

or Green Ground for a more distinctive colour. Careful with green if you are matching with other colours in future, You may be safer with a blue.

Powder Blue from their Archive collection? www.farrow-ball.com/archived-paint/powder-blue?term=blue&af=&langcode=en-GB&start=0&count=30

Ancona Blue or Dix Blue or Oval Room Blue.

Consider tone before you get to shade. F&B colours change during the day according to light.

DialSquare · 03/01/2022 15:59

I like this peacock/teal colour.

jamandmarmaladethesecondcoming · 03/01/2022 16:02

It would be helpful to know what drew you initially to Mizzle?

Was it on the photo or because you liked the shade or the tone?

ivykaty44 · 03/01/2022 16:11

I like the teal that dial has uploaded

death of colour, warm and inviting and not boring

ouch321 · 03/01/2022 16:11

Bright blue would work best as a contrast to the brick work.

jamandmarmaladethesecondcoming · 03/01/2022 16:13

www.farrow-ball.com/paint-colours/borrowed-light?term=blue&af=pagetype%3aproducts&sort=0&langcode=en-GB&start=30&count=30

Borrowed Light is the tone of blue but the shade of Mizzle if that helps?

DappledThings · 03/01/2022 16:16

Sorry, I also think the current colour looks fab and you should keep it

jamandmarmaladethesecondcoming · 03/01/2022 16:16

Or Parma Grey www.farrow-ball.com/paint-colours/parma-gray

if you want the colour ivykaty44 has picked

Little Greene Paint Co are very good too.
