Help me choose a front door colour! (Photos)

We are having our front door painted once it's warm enough. It's an Edwardian semi, and the front room windows and front door glass panels both have tinges of green in some panes.

It's currently a hot pink Confused from the previous owner. See photo. I'm considering a grey green like Farrow & Ball Mizzle or Pigeon. See photo from FB website of Mizzle. I did consider Cromarty but the interiors shop I spoke to advised colours always look a lot lighter outside, and I didn't want the front door to look too pale.

Would Mizzle go? I've always had dark doors, so is there anything I should consider regarding going for a light door?

Deep blue or red

KineticSand · 03/01/2022 13:36

I just got a new front door and went for a smart navy. It really sets off the coloured glass.

Can't stand all the miserable greys around these days!

MrsApplepants · 03/01/2022 13:38

What about a deep aubergine colour?

Shmithecat2 · 03/01/2022 13:38

Another vote for the pink!

Gladioli23 · 03/01/2022 13:39

I really like the pink. Would an Oxford Blue work if you want something traditional? Or a British racing green?

I think grey-ish colours will date.

mimos4 · 03/01/2022 13:43

Some posters have mentioned Oxford blue. Before we moved, I had in my head I'd go for Stiffkey Blue (see photo) or similar for our next house. But having had a black door, and then a dark blue door, for many years, I'm a bit sick of dark doors! But maybe that's better than Mizzle.

Love the current colour!

AuntiePushpa · 03/01/2022 13:44

Do you have a clearer image of the stained glass panels? I'd let that guide you on colour. Agree with others that the super pale green / grey isn't strong enough but that doesn't mean stick with a colour you hate.

Sd352 · 03/01/2022 13:46

Another one for the pink! It brings out the pink in the stained glass too.

If you really hate it, a bright blue or a Hunter green should work well. Or something like this colour: www.londondoor.co.uk/edwardian-stained-glass-door/

We went for a cornflower blue door and I love it — it picks up the blue of our original Minton tiles and contrasts all the red of the brick (our house is late Victorian rather than Edwardian but it seems the fashions were already changing).

stopthatsnooze · 03/01/2022 14:41

Definitely pink. My friend lives in a Georgian house, quite historic overlooking the sea and it's painted pale blue with a pale pink front door. All the houses are painted "ice cream" colours.

mimos4 · 03/01/2022 14:46

The bright pink isn't an option btw! I hate the current pink, and will not be keeping it.

My original suggestion was Mizzle, but I'm open to other colours. I'd consider a pale pink, but think the same issues of light colours becoming dirty quickly would apply?

KrispyBrussels · 03/01/2022 14:47

I was going to say deep blue.

KrispyBrussels · 03/01/2022 14:48

Really don't see the point of a pale door that will show dirt.

mimos4 · 03/01/2022 14:50

Perhaps just a black door again??

Love the pink too....I like mizzle as an indoor colour but weak as a front door for a more classic shade would look at Calke green/duck green or French grey...traditional would be a sort of emerald......I would also consider Brinjal or Downpipe....we ended up going for a brighter lighter blue and accepted that would just repaint but it cheers me up in a grey day..

Whatliesbeneath707 · 03/01/2022 14:55

What about Brassica by Farrow & Ball? It's a more muted lavender colour.
Arsenic Green is nice too or St Giles blue.

bloodywhitecat · 03/01/2022 14:58

I usually hate pink but I love your pink front door!

mimos4 · 03/01/2022 15:01

Thank you PP for your suggestion of Calke Green. Would Calke Green or Green Smoke go better with the house? Attached is Green Smoke apparently.

I don't like the pink at all. It's funny people saying "oh the grey looks really dated" not realising that pink is just the current trend and will date too.

I think the grey/green is classic and just a much nicer colour.

MadeForThis · 03/01/2022 15:04

Bright yellow

Bluebluemoon · 03/01/2022 15:06

My front doors/windows are painted in lamp room grey and have been for about 12 years now. I still love it (despite being the type who constantly changes things indoors!) and people often ask me what the colour is. I've noticed recent renovations round here people are using grey/greenish colours on woodwork as opposed to the trend of black/dark grey that has been the look for years now.

Just pick a colour YOU love, don't worry about whether it's trendy or what other people will think.

Nailsbythesea · 03/01/2022 15:07

The colour you have now is just beautiful and I'm not normally a pink fan . It matches the bushes and planting perfectly.

Sabee · 03/01/2022 15:09

I’m going to say classic black - it would look great with the black and white tiles Smile

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 03/01/2022 15:10

@mimos4 what are the predominant colours in the stained glass?

I have a Victorian house and agonised over front door colour.
Was flip flopping between a true red and British racing green.

Just could not find the shade I wanted in my head.
Then in a most serendipitous turn events I walked by a pub as it was being decorated and got the paint number from them-the perfect Racing Green and I love it!!

Please don't paint it grey!!
