@PoshWatchShitShoes wow, tiler has gone up in my estimation!

@Callmejudith that's not great re the switches!

Callmejudith · 29/10/2021 07:55

I’m glad the tiler apologised!

Just reading on a FB site that having a 4 inch quartz/ granite upstand around your worktops is extremely dated and 1983!! I was planning on this as I have an aversion to tiles ( well, the grout really) and won't be having wall units on the longest worktop run. This is an American FB site but what do you all think??? Dated or not?
Still haven't ordered my DIY kitchen yet as so many of the units and panels I need will have to be altered and I don't know how to do that on the planner!!
Looks like everyone else is making good progress, though there are clearly frustrations. Mine is an empty shell now with heating and electrics all in now. I have a week off in November to pant it then wait for the kitchen before the next phase.
Even the snazzy cat flap is up and working. I really need to get on and order the kitchen....

Callmejudith · 29/10/2021 08:55

@sluj I am getting the very same upstands installed on Thursdays Grin I couldn’t find any tiles I loved and most of the showroom kitchens had upstands I really like the look.

I’ll post pics of course

I'm like upstands too. I planning to order an antique mirror splashback in the kitchen and can't find tiles I like for the utility.

I quite like the look of quartz going up behind the cooker, but that's a really expensive option.

I'd disregard a fb post and look at photos you like on insta.

NewHouseNewMe · 29/10/2021 09:45

I like upstands and will be getting some (had them in a previous house). The only thing is that they don't really work instead of tiles I found but rather in addition to. I tried to do without tiles but the wall was constantly grubby and in the end, I retro-fitted tiles.

sluj · 29/10/2021 09:59

Relieved you don't all feel its old fashioned! I'm not sure what to do above the upstands especially as there is 4 metres of wall with no units just an extractor fan. I really love the mirrors but I don't really want them all the way up to the ceiling, would it look weird to just have a couple of feet all round then paint up to the ceiling? I'm also toying with the idea of the quartz behind the induction hob but I'm a bit worried about how it would cope with the heat.
It's these kind of decisions that cause me the most angst !

LivingInABuildingSite · 29/10/2021 10:02

I haven’t decided lots of things for the kitchen yet, but we put an upstand in the bathroom and I like it. Don’t think it looks old fashioned at all.

Callmejudith · 29/10/2021 10:12

@sluj this is my plan. Red lines will be upstands and blue is stainless steel splashback. There’s going to be a wall light behind the paper but I’m planning to put up prints to break up the space.

The white switches were my fault Blush

The silver ones I bought were for cookers apparently. Have ordered the right ones and they will switch them over. He also only left the hole in the grid switch to confirm the configuration was correct but has a spare one to put in the gap. I should never have under estimated him he's the only one who I like lol

We've just had a big meeting with project manager and building firm owner. We've decided that we'll move out in 10 days for a fortnight for all our sanities! Hopefully they can then really crack on 🤞🤞.

PoshWatchShitShoes · 29/10/2021 11:49

That made me chuckle @Callmejudith. I'm need to crack on with ordering switches, hopefully not cooker ones. Actually I need to walk around the site on Sunday and do a count as I kept adding switches and sockets that weren't on the plans 🙈

Where will you stay for the 10 days @MissFritton65? Hopefully somewhere lovely!

PoshWatchShitShoes · 29/10/2021 11:50

Just popped into the site. I know they must be annoyed at seeing me all the time 😂

Boys' bathroom is tiled. Super happy with how it looks 😊

I’d definitely recommend TLC electrical for switches etc they are great and really reasonable. All mine are Nexus brushed steel.

Those tiles are fab Posh.

OP posts:
sluj · 29/10/2021 13:13

@Callmejudith, I think that's probably what I will end up with too. I have some prints I could frame to go on the long wall. Your kitchen actually looks like a kitchen now.
We got Nexus brushed steel too from our local electrical wholesaler. Our electrician told me not get flush ones unless I was 100% sure every wall was straight. He said they buckle when you try to screw them in tight. My fittings are in now and actually look good. I got so many USB ones though, I am expecting a connected future!

MissFritton65 · 29/10/2021 15:21

@PoshWatchShitShoes we have just booked into some holidays cottages about 3 miles away. The downside is we can't have 1 for the full 2 weeks so will have to move around them but they are all around the same courtyard so no biggie BUT there is a spa there too!

PoshWatchShitShoes · 29/10/2021 15:27

@MissFritton65 throat sounds fun!! Like a mini break with spa. Very much needed I imagine after living on site!!

MissFritton65 · 29/10/2021 15:31

@PoshWatchShitShoes yes it should be great; I intend to treat it like a holiday. There is also a resident chef so you can have meals supplied if you wish! I'm actually quite excited about it.

PoshWatchShitShoes · 29/10/2021 15:34

Another guest bathroom tile photo, cos that's all I've got to show for now 😆

I'm doing half panelled walls and then painting the oak door in Wimborne White. They're starting second fix on the bathrooms on Monday!! So exciting.

Tiler is now getting my "favourite trade" of the week medal 🏅He's just finished grouting boys' bathroom floor 👏

Just got a call from bathroom shop. My master bath is still stuck on a ship somewhere. The builder can't move forward on my bathroom till it's here 🤦🏼‍♀️ Now looking if I can find something similar that's in stock. Photo of one I ordered attached. Suggestions welcome

Something like this?

The delivery times don't seem too bad, they have a few variations on the style

Loving all the photos, the tiling looks lovely, really nice.

My flooring has gone down today! Which is amazing! It looks lush. And, no more dust!!!
