Really awkward room layout

How would you furnish this room. The TV is 55” and the door cannot be moved due to the staircase.

I can’t see how we could make this work.

The start point is brand new furniture apart from the tele which isn’t a compromise

Obviously I’m talking about the living room.

Tv across the corner between the fire place(?) and the window, sofa between the door and window, along the wall with the door on it, and a sofa where it says ‘Sitting Room’.

ChicChaos · 18/09/2021 22:29

Is that a fireplace on the left hand wall? Would the TV go over there with seating either side of the door on the right? Or would the TV need to go at the end with the patio doors due to its size?

SuperFairy · 18/09/2021 22:33

Yes, it’s a fireplace. I’m thinking of ripping it out!

I’d put a corner sofa where I’ve marked yellow, and a bookcase or side board where I’ve put green.

What’s the box on the left? Is that the fireplace? If so can the tv go on the wall with the purple blob? Or could you knock that fireplace out if not so you could have a tv stand there if you’re not keen on it being on the wall?

Tv bottom left hand corner. Then work furniture around there

SuperFairy · 18/09/2021 22:37

It’s not our house but a potential one that OH seems to think will be fine without considering furniture……….

Really comfy furniture.

parietal · 18/09/2021 23:22

Here the TV is blue in the corner. Then 3 seater sofa (orange 3) and 2 seater sofa (orange 2) and bookshelves in green.

This assumes the door to the garden is rarely used. The plans might need to change if that is used a lot.

You need to create 2 separate zones, otherwise it will feel like you're sitting in a corridor. TV on the back wall, a 3 and a 2 seater looking at the TV (one against a side wall, one perpendicular to the door) massive bookshelves surrounding the TV, and the space to the other side of the door being a book nook or something similar.

catmg · 18/09/2021 23:34

Oh and get rid of the fireplace out of further narrowing an already narrow room

PickAChew · 18/09/2021 23:41

Similar sized living room - same width, couple of feet shorter. Seating is arranged in a square with TV on diagonal, in corner. Area behind is bookcase etc.

RainbowMum11 · 19/09/2021 00:19

What's the fireplace like?
Is there a chimney/flue and fire or is it more ornamental?

RandomMess · 19/09/2021 00:26

Take out fireplace, move door to where that storage cupboard is.

JohnandMary · 19/09/2021 03:00

Make the dining room a tv room with the giant tv on the right hand wall. Make the living room a dining room/conversation/reading room with maybe a smaller more discreet tv.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 19/09/2021 08:13

Very similar to my living room.

We ripped the fire place out and the TV is now there.

Miliao · 19/09/2021 08:27

How many of you will be watching tv?

Balonder · 19/09/2021 08:34

Very similar to our old living room. We had it just like parietal suggested. Shelves at back wall to make the room 'squarer'. TV in corner near the window and 2 couches perpendicular to each other

privateinfo · 19/09/2021 08:46

We also had a house the same layout. Fireplace removed, room put into two 'zones' - one end a corner sofa with tv opposite on the wall the other can be a reading area.

Sorry for posting and not coming back, thanks everyone for your comments, lots of food for thought and good ideas.

There will only be 2 of us watching TV and I’m looking into the possibility of losing the cupboard and moving the door there instead. Perhaps even a pocket door?

I think that we can make it work with a bit of imagination, the fire will have to go. I’d like to get rid and instead install a wood burner in the front left corner.

The rest of the house works really well and if we can get this right it would make a fabulous home.

If there’s only two of you, then it’s no problem at all! Just put the sofa to the left of the door and tv in the bottom left corner. Depending on where you live you may not be able to install a wood burner due to pollution limits, I’d also be wary as they massively increase pollution levels in the house.

Miliao · 21/09/2021 23:21

I’d save your money and use it to knock through kitchen and dining room as with just the two of you it’s unlikely that room will be used and they both look a bit dark.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 21/09/2021 23:32

If there's just two of you, I'd put a squishy big corner sofa in the dining room instead with the TV in the bottom left corner of it.

Then in the larger, more awkward, room, I'd put the dining table down by the window (parallel to it), and up near the garden doors, some full bookshelves, a couple of nice armchairs, maybe a desk.

Pocket doors are good, and you can get good quality ones these days. They don't have to be the rackety/wobbly ones.

I'm in Australia, and the rentals and my bought house have/had them. Real space savers, open up and separate rooms. TBF, they really go into the hollow wall, not track outside, which looks shite.

Not to be used in bathrooms, IMHO.

Blue is corner sofa and 2 seater, brown is coffee table and sideboard yellow is kids area
