Removal men tip. How much?

We are finally moving house on 14th September. Yesterday after many failed attempts I managed to book removal men in, a proper family run business, not a man in van. I’m paying £400 for the first four hours, then £75 per hour after that. We really only need them to move our furniture since we’re in a rental until the end of the week and can move boxes/smaller items in our own time in the car. Does this seem a reasonable price? We’re in the West Midlands. I had another quote for £1,100 yesterday, so a big difference!

I’m definitely going to be tipping them, unless something major goes wrong! What is the going rate for tipping removal men? I was thinking £20 each. Thank you!

Oooh we moved yesterday, also in the West Midlands. Didn’t tip though, wasn’t aware people did that and they didn’t look as if they expected one. We had the packing service which was £500. Can’t remember what the move cost was but I’ll ask DH. Good luck with the house move!

lobsterkiller · 02/09/2021 16:27

I tipped £20 per person, only 3 of them. They was mega cheap mind.

Blankspace4 · 02/09/2021 16:28

Yes I also tipped £20 per person. There were 4 blokes, but it wasn’t an easy job (valuable and heavy items, 4 storey house and 150 mile drive!)

HollowTalk · 02/09/2021 16:29

I was going to say £20 per person, too.

MrsBungle · 02/09/2021 16:31

I tipped £20 each. They deserved it. I also bought them bacon rolls. House before this one I didn’t tip as they were rubbish!

Footprintsonmyfloor · 02/09/2021 16:32

We didn’t tip but we had horrendous service.

Starseeking · 02/09/2021 21:30

There were 6 removal men when I moved earlier this year. They arrived promptly at 8am in the morning. I had to rush off and buy them all Costa coffee/tea as had packed kettle Blush then gave each one £10 as a tip. They were brilliant, and at half a days work which I'd already paid £800 for, that seemed fine.

Starseeking · 02/09/2021 21:31

So tipping plus drinks cost me almost £90 on top!

Fluffymule · 02/09/2021 22:12

£20 each and I paid for their lunch en-route to the new house.

maofteens · 03/09/2021 00:16

I moved 70 miles, they had to go the day before to get stuff out of a storage unit, plus collect stuff they were storing for me. Three guys in two vans who worked hard all day. Gave them water (no kettle) and Krispy Kremes and a £20 tip each.
They had packed up a month earlier and I just gave them any alcohol I had - a bottle of port, some Prosecco and a couple bottles wine which they seemed pleased with.

Thoughtyouwerethecandyman · 03/09/2021 00:26

Nobody I know tips removal men. Is that a Mumsnet thing?

Bluesheep8 · 03/09/2021 07:54

I’m paying £400 for the first four hours, then £75 per hour after that.

Sorry but I'd be very wary of this.
How many hours at £75 are you going to be paying?

careerchangeperhaps · 03/09/2021 07:59

I've never tipped removal men. Didn't realise it was a thing. The last lot were lovely so we gave them a crate of beers as a thank you.

loveacupoftea18 · 03/09/2021 08:54

We tipped £20 each. They did such a great job and worked really hard, it felt only fair. We knew they wouldn't be seeing much of the fee we'd paid!

blobby10 · 03/09/2021 11:03

I've never tipped the removal men but did make many many cups of tea and coffee! And lots and lots of thankyous. And we used them for three out of five moves. Feel really guilty now that I didn't tip them Blush

She could use them all day and still not pay as much as her other quote.
PumpkinKlNG · 03/09/2021 11:41

I didn’t tip 🤷‍♀️

DespairingHomeowner · 03/09/2021 12:28

I tipped £20 each for 3 people too - I don't think its compulsory but its hard work & I can't imagine they earn a huge amount

Bouledeneige · 03/09/2021 17:58

I tipped £20 per person but forgot about the tip for the packer - so they shared it with him.

Recycledblonde · 03/09/2021 18:02

We gave them £100 between them, there were 4 of them and they were brilliant. We’ve used them before and my daughter is using them for her upcoming move.

ShingleBeach · 03/09/2021 18:24

I’ve always tipped removal men.

And before I joined MN.

Always had really good service, they work so hard, helped by putting stuff in the loft, etc.

£20 each for 3 of them, last time.

BringMeTea · 03/09/2021 18:34

25 quid each.

DancingQueen2018 · 03/09/2021 18:36

£20 each and beers. They moved us twice in 6 months and were great both times!

IndiaDreaming · 03/09/2021 18:41

I bought 3 guys breakfast and lunch over two days.

catwithflowers · 03/09/2021 18:52

I did a Greggs run for our last lot! Lots of pasties, pies and coffees. That seemed to go down well 🙂
