Buying a house near a cemetery

Looking for advice from anyone who lives or has lived next to cemetery. We're looking to move house and have seen one that looks perfect for us that backs on to a cemetery. The cemetery itself doesn't bother me as I don't get spooked and I think it will be nice and peaceful. I'm mostly concerned about spiders! The house we currently live in us quite old and full of spiders. I get rid of large spiders daily! This house is a newer house (1960/70s) but I'm concerned that being close to a cemetery it may get a lot of spiders. Does anyone else have any experience in this area? Also are there any drawbacks to living in a property that backs on to a public cemetery?

A cemetery is no more likely to attract spiders than a garden.

My parents live down the road from a cemetery and at Halloween there’s usually a procession of goths climbing over the railings to get in and out. I wouldn’t say it’s a particular irritant or drawback though!

EastWestWhosBest · 13/08/2021 19:24

I used to live close to a cemetery, in fact the road had cemetery in its name.
It wasn’t a issue at all, but the entrance at the end of my road wasn’t used so we didn’t have funerals passing by.

I live next to a cemetery. It's beautiful, especially in Spring time when it's full of crocuses and daffodils.

I have never noticed any more spiders than in other houses I have lived in.

We do get the occasional mouse but I expect mice are in all locations. It would be the same living close to any open land/fields. The cat generally chases off any mice. She actually also sorts out any spiders too. Perhaps get a cat OP. Grin

My concern would be parking, not spiders.

I live by a cemetery, it's a beautiful old one and I love going for walks there. It is full of wildlife but I haven't particularly noticed many spiders.

Stinkywizzleteets · 13/08/2021 19:31

I’d love it. The neighbours would be dead quiet

I’ll get my coat

User7458 · 13/08/2021 19:35

Parking could be difficult, depends on the roads in relation to your house and size of cemetery, you may have a lot of different cars parked outside your house from people popping in and visiting it.

I'd love to back onto a cemetery. Peaceful, Probably lots of big mature trees, and absolutely no chance of it being developed into housing.

Suzi888 · 13/08/2021 20:23

I’d love it too, so peaceful.

MrsSkylerWhite · 13/08/2021 20:25

We lived in a church conversion surrounded by graves. Closest was 3ft from the kitchen (floor to ceiling) windows. Most tranquil place we’ve ever lived and I didn’t notice an influx of spiders (why would there be?).

RunningFromInsanity · 13/08/2021 20:31

I live next to one, very quiet neighbours Grin and no chance of flats being built on it.

BigPyjamas · 13/08/2021 20:32

I grew up next to one. It's very peaceful, beautiful trees and flowers. Occasional funeral and weddings which were always lovely to see (there was an active church too)

Most annoying thing was the churchyard mowing rota which always seemed to be when we we're having lunch outside.

frenchnovice · 13/08/2021 20:56

spiders woukd be the last thing on my mind..like PP said.,unlikely to be built on

nildesparandum · 13/08/2021 21:32

I have lived opposite a cemetery for years.Does not bother me at all.
The only thing that distresses me is the local council have neglected lately due to cuts.At one time there were about half a dozen gardeners who kept it immaculate. The senior one lived in a large house on the premises. Now there are no permanent staff and it looks a mess.No new graves only funerals if the family already have a plot, so is very quiet(obviously).Occaisonly drug addicts go in and dispose of their needles etc., and also alcoholics come in to sleep it off.
When we first moved n my MIL when visiting refused to look out of our front windows because it spooked her up, but it has never bothered me.

Jada1234 · 13/08/2021 23:07

I live next door to a cemetery, I dont not have any problems with spiders.

2018SoFarSoGreat · 13/08/2021 23:30

I grew up across the road from a cemetery - not near either gate mind you, so no traffic. It was beautiful, calm, peaceful, and lovely to walk through. No spiders that I ever recall. There were glorious allotments by it that produced amazing stuff - guess the soil was quite 'enriched' :)

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 14/08/2021 08:02

Could it be that the spiders are a bit scared of the cemetery and that's why they are coming into your house?

Crockof · 14/08/2021 08:10

I wasn't expecting the concern to be spiders!

  1. How old is it? Local to me graveyards are being built but all graves are more than 100 years old so do check local plan etc.
  1. Anti social behaviour, depending on where it is graveyards can attract anti social behaviour
  1. Attached church? If so what denominations, how busy is it, is parking an issue.
greenlynx · 14/08/2021 09:55

I would worry about traffic and parking, especially if you need to leave the house in particular time.
I don’t think being near cemetery increases amount of spiders. We are not and have a lot of them.

MrsFin · 14/08/2021 10:44

I'm probably being dim, but why would living next to a cemetery (as opposed to, say, a field) mean you get more spiders? Hmm

surreygirl1987 · 14/08/2021 11:40

I honestly can't see why spiders would be an issue any more than anywhere!

I think living by a cemetery would be great. Really peaceful and they're generally beautifully kept.

It sounds perfect! I love spiders as they eat all the other bugs and flies.
