Gas or induction hob?

You all helped me realise we only need a built under single oven so treating ourselves to a fancy Neff oven. Do I want a gas hob as we have now, or is induction better?? I like the look of induction hobs, but bloody BIL told DH they’re annoying and ‘never again’!

They are superb. Fast and responsive as gas but cleaned in a wipe.
You need a beefy power cable to run it however.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 06/08/2021 19:09

Induction but spend as much as you can afford on one.

Anjo2011 · 06/08/2021 19:11

Had a neff one installed as part of new kitchen . Have always cooked with has before. 100% recommend. It’s clean, quick and a quick wipe over afterwards it’s back to its shiny self. If you do go induction your may need new pans , just something to consider.

Roselilly36 · 06/08/2021 19:17

Go induction OP, I have recently moved had a range with gas hob, now have Induction, it is so good. We have a Bosch one, it is excellent, boils so fast, an absolute breeze to clean. I wouldn’t go back to gas.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 06/08/2021 19:19

Induction every time. Once you get used to it, you will never look back.

RandomMess · 06/08/2021 19:21

Induction every time and I loved my gas hob previously.

FullMoonInsomnia · 06/08/2021 19:23

I hate induction hobs. They take ages to heat up and keep cutting off constantly during cooking. I loathe them. I prefer electric to gas.

RandomMess · 06/08/2021 19:25

@FullMoonInsomnia then you've used a faulty job.

Our kettle on the induction job is as quick as a rapid boil kettle. Some cheap induction jobs don't have a rapid function I think.

Indigopearl · 06/08/2021 19:26

I think people that hate induction must have poor quality ones or be confusing them halogen. Ours heats up really fast and does not turn off at all.

FullMoonInsomnia · 06/08/2021 19:26

I’ve used a few. I don’t have one myself but have always found the same problem with them. You also need to keep pressing the buttons over and over again!

FullMoonInsomnia · 06/08/2021 19:27

Used one in a holiday house a few weeks ago. Couldn’t cook anything properly on it.

Ladyrattles · 06/08/2021 19:32

I've picked an induction for our new build as lots of the other residents were raving about how good they are and easy to clean.

Soontobe60 · 06/08/2021 19:34

Induction every day here - but get a powerful one and have it properly wired in. Mine doesn’t like it if I’m using all 4 zones at once - they won’t all stay on full power at the same time.

RandomMess · 06/08/2021 19:34

Hmmmm I think there is an adjustment period. If they keep turning off they are faulty/knackered/broken.

Magnet sent us something instead of an induction one, I could tell straight away - they argued back was white with me and my fitter but I was right and peace restored when the correct one showed up.

Sleepinghyena · 06/08/2021 19:38

Induction. I will never go back to Gas.
Mine is at the cheaper end of the scale and still boils a very large pan of water in 1 min 30 seconds. There are no negatives to induction in my opinion.

Apeirogon · 06/08/2021 19:40

Induction definitely

mafted · 06/08/2021 19:42

I prefer gas. We had an induction fitted when we first had the kitchen done. It was far from cheap.
I hated the faffing with buttons and just couldn't get used to it, sold it and bought a gas one after a month.

happymummy12345 · 06/08/2021 19:45

Both my husband (who is a chef) and I swear by gas.

LanisHouseLot · 06/08/2021 19:54

Are there children in your house? Gas hobs are associated with childhood asthma due to the NO2 they give off. Personally I have decided to avoid gas on that basis (there is a strong history of childhood asthma in my family though, I'm not suggesting everyone should make the same call), so induction would get my vote on that basis.

Medievalist · 06/08/2021 21:17

Hate, hate, hate induction hobs. Because you have to maintain a connection between the pan and the hob they are useless for things like stir fries, omelettes, pancakes - basically anything where you might want to shake/lift the pan properly. Give me gas any time - it heats the sides of a wok properly and is just a pleasure to cook with.

RandomMess · 06/08/2021 21:20

Eh?

I lift my pan up and then put it down again and it stops beeping and carries on as was Confused

Yeah he tells you off for lifting the pan up but it's flicks back into set heat mode when you put it down.

PeonyTime · 06/08/2021 21:26

I HATED the induction we had in a rental. Knowing the landlord, it was cheep as chips. As others have said, it was a pig to switch on and off, kept beeping at me, and switched off randomly. It was nice to clean!

StrawberryPuff · 06/08/2021 21:26

If cooking results are more important to you, get gas.

If ease of cleaning is more important to you get induction.

Fastforwardtospring · 06/08/2021 21:35

You need decent pans on induction otherwise they can take a while to heat. I love my Siemens induction, we’ve also got the recommended pans which work brilliantly, purchased a cheapie supermarket pan and took ages. Instead of a wok we use a teppen yaki grill plate. I wouldn’t go back to gas.

Hitchyhero · 06/08/2021 21:37

We are about to switch from gas to induction hob - for the sole reason of cleanability. We hate cleaning gas hobs
