Gas or induction hob?

You all helped me realise we only need a built under single oven so treating ourselves to a fancy Neff oven. Do I want a gas hob as we have now, or is induction better?? I like the look of induction hobs, but bloody BIL told DH they’re annoying and ‘never again’!

I have an induction hob. I don't understand all the comments about fiddling with buttons. Mine are standard on/off, turn for more power.

I love it.

QueenStromba · 07/08/2021 09:12

Induction. Easier to clean, better for air quality. I agree that people who think they're crap probably actually have a ceramic hob or a cheap one. It's also worth trying new pans before replacing it I needed a new frying pan recently and noticed a lot of reviews saying that even though the pan was advertised as induction, it was much slower to heat than their other pans - they don't all have a full layer of irons/steel in the base. I've also found that while my wok does heat up on the largest ring, it gets much hotter on the medium rings.

QueenStromba · 07/08/2021 09:17

Oh, and I agree with the poster that said always get a job with knobs on - the touch buttons can be really infuriating.

Warmduscher · 07/08/2021 09:19

@happymummy12345

Both my husband (who is a chef) and I swear by gas.
Me too.

And you can’t flame-cook chapatis on an induction hob either!

If ease of cleaning mattered more to me than cooking, I would definitely get an induction hob though.

Zinnia · 07/08/2021 13:58

We're replacing our kitchen and have been intending to keep our perfectly good 10yo 5 burner gas hob. However could be swayed to a domino one with induction/ gas combi.

One of the main things that's putting me off is having to replace the fine selection of pans we've built up over the years. What did those of you who bought shiny new pans for your induction hobs do with all your old ones?!

BIWI · 07/08/2021 14:02

All those saying gas is for cooks whereas induction is for looks are wrong!

... or maybe they'd like to put their views forward to Raymond Blanc and his chefs, who all cook on induction hobs (and swear by them) now.

RandomMess · 07/08/2021 14:05

I used a magnet and found out most of our pans were induction hob compatible.

When I bought some more I just took the magnet with me as so many are compatible but not marked up accordingly.

SeaToSki · 07/08/2021 14:10

I have a pacemaker and use an induction hob quite happily. Its all about the distance from your pacemaker to the magnetic coil, so if you lie on the hob face first and turn it on, you would get magnetic interference, but otherwise, highly unlikely

Also magnetic interference with pacemakers is different from EMF interference. Magnets just put them into send and received mode which is typified by a constant 80bpm. EMF is the scary stuff

SeaToSki · 07/08/2021 14:11

Also gas hobs are more environmentally unfriendly. Their conversion ration of fuel to heat is much much lower than powerstations

Usuallyhappycamper · 07/08/2021 14:24

I love my induction. Got rid of gas when ds 1 could reach the dials and wouldn't stop trying to turn them on. Always loved gas before that, but would choose induction as a preference over gas now. It is a bit on the annoying side when Aldi have cheap but good quality pans that aren't induction compatible, but not the end of the world.

FurierTransform · 07/08/2021 14:36

I love (a good) induction, wouldn't go back to gas - it feels like something from the stone age in comparison.

chillibeansauce · 07/08/2021 14:38

Induction - the best you can afford. Hate having to clean gas every time I cook as otherwise looks grotty.

Hitchyhero · 07/08/2021 14:41

What do people spend on an 'good' induction hob? I've seen plenty of comments that you should spend a bit and not go cheap... Is there something speicifc that people should be looking for?

I've recently bought the HOTPOINT TB 3977B BF from curry's for £280. It's not installed yet but it has good reviews.....

Orangesarenottheonlyfruit · 07/08/2021 14:48

Induction! Induction! Induction!
I am pro cook and I love my Bosch induction hob. Just as fast to heat up as gas but it also goes lower so you melt choc without resorting to a bain marie.
I cannot fathom these people who say they are unreliable or fiddly.
Get a Bosch one. The touch screen is awesome, you can time things to simmer while you're off doing something else (such as spag bol while doing school run) and of course it is safer than gas. I cannot rave more highly.

Panickingpavlova · 07/08/2021 14:58

@Orangesarenottheonlyfruit

Could you state the model?
It's just there are so so so many different ranges within one company for induction hobs, thank you.

Are people saying it's best to get one
that needs wiring in?

Hitchy hero yes!!
What specially makes a good induction hob!

Orangesarenottheonlyfruit · 07/08/2021 15:12

@panickingpavlova I just had a quick look and it seems they don't make mine anymore. We must have had it 6 years. TBF any Bosch will be good. They are such a reliable brand.

BIWI · 07/08/2021 15:27

They have to be wired in, by a properly qualified electrician.

orinocosfavoritecake · 07/08/2021 15:44

Induction every time

Oldraver · 07/08/2021 16:32

I live our induction job although we wrecked a frying pan by having it on too high at first (read the instructions with new frying pan which said not to have induction on 'p' )

It can throw a wobbly if too much water gets under the pan but the best bit of it is being able to put a tea towel or cloth under the pan

I was cooking something the other day and didn't want to use a lid as the steam evaporating adds to the pan so just put a Muslim over the top.

semideponent · 07/08/2021 16:36

I have a combined gas and induction hob - 3 rings gas, 2 rings induction. I use gas once every two years. Induction every day. (Family of 4).

You do need induction friendly pans, and it is important to match pan to hob size with induction. I learned the hard way.

domesticslattern · 07/08/2021 17:01

I hate my induction hob. Mostly because it is touch control so it takes a few touches each time to get it to the right level, when a knob would be much speedier. I also don't find it particularly easy to clean as there is sometimes a weird residue that takes ages to remove from the glass.
And if you do the cheffy thing with a wok it scratches and turns off FFS.
Also it beeps constantly as though I am a naughty girl for doing something innocuous like putting a pan lid down.
Confused

That's interesting. I was quoting from the British heart Foundation page who recommend that pacemaker wearers stand at least two metres from an induction hob.

One of the main things that's putting me off is having to replace the fine selection of pans we've built up over the years. What did those of you who bought shiny new pans for your induction hobs do with all your old ones?!
All of ours except an old milk pan that was past it's best worked when we got an induction. I didn't need to buy anything new.

MauveMavis · 07/08/2021 18:45

Induction. Would never put in gas again.

Mine is a siemens.

Really easy to clean. Heats up super fast (boils water faster than the kettle).

I only had to replace one of my pans - a wok. Stainless Steel and Le creuset both work fine on induction.

I've just had a quick look and loads of the non stick ranges are now induction compatible.

Test what you have with a magnet - you might be surprised.

Walkinginawingingwonderland · 07/08/2021 18:59

We have gas but DH used DSIL’s induction to cook Chinese food and was massively impressed. He says that gas in your average British house isn’t fast enough and he found the induction quicker and closer to the high speeds used in commercial kitchens (he grew up in Chinese restaurant trade.) He just said that if you have problems with using a wok on an induction, you’re not going flipping fast enough Grin!
