Gas or induction hob?

You all helped me realise we only need a built under single oven so treating ourselves to a fancy Neff oven. Do I want a gas hob as we have now, or is induction better?? I like the look of induction hobs, but bloody BIL told DH they’re annoying and ‘never again’!

Definitely induction, but NOT a touch control one - make sure you have knobs

Newgirls · 06/08/2021 21:44

Gas is being phased out in the UK and not put in new builds.

Induction is far more eco - heats quickly and efficiently.

AssemblySquare · 06/08/2021 21:46

@LanisHouseLot that’s really interesting - 2 of my 3 kids and both DH and I are asthmatic!

Love, love, love my induction hob. I don't know how someone could say it takes ages to heat up. They come on instantly and heat the pot, not the cooktop.

They are so easy to clean. Ours still looks brand new after ten years. Instant heat control. Awesome simmer. But heats liquids in record time.

Terracedtardis · 06/08/2021 22:06

What do you need to look for to get a powerful induction job? We have a Neff one and I find it so slow to heat a pan of water.

StupidNC · 06/08/2021 22:15

Induction with knobs - I found that the touch ones really hurt my fingers & weren't v responsive (demo ones in the showroom that had been used loads). I miss cooking with gas for some things, but overall love induction, especially from a safety angle (no longer worried about anything catching fire!).

@Terracedtardis I have one that has a 'water boost' function on one ring; all the other rings are slower than gas, but that one is faster than a kettle. I suspect you'd need to buy a hob that has that (or similar) function.

CatherineTheNotSoGreat · 06/08/2021 22:16

Induction induction induction.

More responsive than gas, and way more controlability (I know that’s not really a word) and so much cleaner. I’ve been cooking on induction of nearly 20 years and I’d never go back to gas.

RandomMess · 06/08/2021 22:20

@Terracedtardis yes I think it's boost that it's called, all my rings have a boost function.

Whoopsmahoot · 06/08/2021 22:29

Had gas and induction hobs. Love induction for speed and ease of cleaning. Not the best for stir fries but liveable. Induction every time for me.

LoveFall · 06/08/2021 22:39

It took a few tries but I have a wok that gets blazing hot on my induction cooktop, and very quickly.

One of the best things is if you catch something threatening to boil over, one quick touch and its down.

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 06/08/2021 23:08

My neff induction is brilliant, not least because it is SO easy to clean!!

loopylindi · 06/08/2021 23:30

We needed to install an induction hob, where previously there had been a gas one. I've used gas all my life, professionally and domestically so I wasn't sure. We found a Neff one which connects via a 13amp plug and it's brilliant. It heats up quickly, is very responsive to the controls, has a timer function which turns off after time complete (so my pressure cooker can be left on, safe in the knowledge it isn't going to boil dry. Best of all, it's a dream to clean

May I ask what wok you use on your induction hob? Our hob is fairly new and I was wondering what wok to buy.
MissyB1 · 07/08/2021 07:37

We have a neff induction hob and use John Lewis pans, love them both!

Einszwei · 07/08/2021 07:41

If you are a foodie....gas. Induction has it's benefits, but it is terrible flif you use woks etc. as you need to maintain contact with the hob.

Also, any warping of the base of your pan and you will have uneven cooking.

notacooldad · 07/08/2021 07:42

I love my duel duel one.
Best if both worlds.
Previously I had an induction only but it cracked. Replaced it with part induction part gas and it us awesome.

TheDogsMother · 07/08/2021 07:44

Neff induction hob. I would never go back to gas. It is slightly different at first but once you are used to it they are great.

Pootle40 · 07/08/2021 07:44

Induction 100%. I find myself looking at homes online with new kitchens installed and being put off because it has a gas hob. Silly, I know but I love my Siemens induction hob.

CrystalMaisie · 07/08/2021 07:50

Induction, love it, fast and responsive I’ve got no negatives to say about it.

skippy67 · 07/08/2021 07:51

@notacooldad, do you have a link to the hob you have please?

notacooldad · 07/08/2021 07:56

I have this one. My sister has a Neff one which was about £100 more but she is very happy with hers as well.

TDogsInHats · 07/08/2021 07:56

@AssemblySquare
Just wanted to comment that there is a downside, induction hobs should not be used by people with a heart pacemaker or similar. A very slim margin of people I know, but this is in response to previous poster who said there were no downsides.

Raxer26A · 07/08/2021 08:00

Induction no question

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 07/08/2021 08:39

A good test (if you could do it) is to make some jam on both a gas and an induction hob and let it boil over.
Then clean them both!

(I'd go for induction.)

comeundone · 07/08/2021 08:46

I agree with the induction lovers. Ours is an AEG and is fast to start, sensible sizes of zones, has a good range of operating temperature settings, easy to clean. Previous (old and cheap) gas which was here when we moved in was terrible by comparison. But don't go cheap with induction hobs and talk to your electricians at the start so that they can put an appropriate power supply in.
