Would you buy a house without a bath?

Me and DH are buying our first property. We have come across a house for a really decent price and although we haven't viewed it yet, one thing is seriously putting me off... it doesn't have a bath, only a shower.

We have one child but would like 1 more in the near future. The house we live in currently has a bath and a separate cubicle shower so bathing DS hasn't been an issue. Baby bath in the big bath, then bath seat in the bath and now just a non slip mat in the bath.

My question is, if you were in my situation, would you buy a house without a bath?

We don't have the money to renovate and don't know how much it would cost to install a bath just yet.

What's your thoughts?

We have, but our children are old enough to have showers. I'm not sure I would if I had, or was planning to have at some point, a baby.

Andthenanothercupoftea · 03/08/2021 09:15

As long as there was space for a bath it wouldn't put me off.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 03/08/2021 09:15

We are removing the bath to make room for a walk in shower.

But our youngest is 8.

Neondisco · 03/08/2021 09:17

No I wouldn't but I like a bath. If there was room for a bath I wouldn't let it put me off an otherwise good house .

BridgeOfLies · 03/08/2021 09:18

Only if there was room for a bath and the price reflected the cost of having the work done. If there were two similar houses for sale and one had a bath/one didn't, I'd choose the one with a bath every time.

Keepitonthedownlow · 03/08/2021 09:20

Yes the shower us good for DC as less deep

We did. Renovated the bathroom after about 18 months and put one in. If the rest of the house works then it's not a massive issue in my experience

itbemay1 · 03/08/2021 09:24

No. I love a bath! Plus with small kids is so easy to Chuck them in the bath!

Dollywilde · 03/08/2021 09:24

We did, but the previous owners had removed the bath to put in a walk in shower so it was a relatively straightforward job, something like £1500 for Labour and materials.

I wouldn’t if there had any been scope to put one in.

MarianneUnfaithful · 03/08/2021 09:24

If there was a space for a Bath, or to swap the shower for a bath (if that’s what you prefer) I wouldn’t let it put me off a good house.

A simple swap and make good (rather than install a whole new bathroom) wouldn’t be expensive.

SweatyBetty20 · 03/08/2021 09:25

If the bathroom needed replacing and the price reflected this then yes. If the bathroom was newly done and was being marketed as a bit of a feature then no. I can't do without my Sunday night bath and leg shave.

CarlaH · 03/08/2021 09:25

No

golddustwomen · 03/08/2021 09:26

Depends how old my children are. At 7 and 4 currently and there's no way I wouldn't have a bath.

JudgeRindersMinder · 03/08/2021 09:27

Only if there was room to put one in. We’ve not long moved into a house where the bath was replaced with a walk in shower, the whole house needs renovated, but my god I miss my bath!

IWantAllTheDogsInTheWorld · 03/08/2021 09:29

It wouldn't put me off as you can buy a half decent bath for around £100, taps and plumbing, fixtures etc £200 and labour if you aren't DIY £100(?). Altogether £500 if you include any redecorating you might have to do.

Mydogisagentleman · 03/08/2021 09:30

I would because I don’t like baths, my husband probably wouldn’t because he does.
When our DD was a baby, we lived abroad and baths were unheard of.
I got a baby bath and filled it up in the shower. As she grew she solely had a shower

DinosaurDiana · 03/08/2021 09:30

If I absolutely loved the house I would, I’d put the baby bath in the shower.

ToffeeNotCoffee · 03/08/2021 09:32

We did. We then paid to have the shower cubicle removed and a bath put in the space where I suspect the bath was previously. We kept the shower as the bath went underneath it.

We sold the house a few years later. The new owners took the bath out, apparently. (Insert smiley face icon)

Ozanj · 03/08/2021 09:33

I would. I’ve been giving 19 mo DS showers since birth as I couldn’t kneel / sit so it was easier. As I grew stronger I put his baby bath into the shower too. Proper Baths only began recently but he only has one a week. Rest are showers.

Terhou · 03/08/2021 09:40

Definitely, we only use the shower in our house anyway.

ThePontiacBandit · 03/08/2021 09:43

We did. Previous house owners were elderly and they removed the bath for a walk in shower (large tray). DD was 4 and I love a bath so it was one of the first things we did was replace the bathroom - it was not to our taste (think peach tiles and suite, enormous his and hers sinks). No regrets though, the house was worth it.

NotWanting · 03/08/2021 09:43

Just ripped our bath out to put in a walk in shower.

If I had young children I'd just put them in a baby bath in the bottom of the shower.

ComtesseDeSpair · 03/08/2021 09:44

When we renovated our bathroom we kept the bath even though we knew we’d never use it, as a couple of friends who had recently sold their places without baths got feedback from viewers that people with children think they’re essential.

Personally I’d think it was easier to stand under a shower with a toddler or child rather than have to faff about with filling a bath and then all the mess and splashing, but I appear to be in the minority.

ChildrenGrowingUpTooFast · 03/08/2021 09:44

I don’t like baths and my youngest is nearly 7. It won’t put me off because we use the baths as a shower anyway. Would it be ok to put a baby bath in the shower? It is such a minor problem because most people would redo bathrooms (like kitchens)
