Would you buy a house without a bath?

Me and DH are buying our first property. We have come across a house for a really decent price and although we haven't viewed it yet, one thing is seriously putting me off... it doesn't have a bath, only a shower.

We have one child but would like 1 more in the near future. The house we live in currently has a bath and a separate cubicle shower so bathing DS hasn't been an issue. Baby bath in the big bath, then bath seat in the bath and now just a non slip mat in the bath.

My question is, if you were in my situation, would you buy a house without a bath?

We don't have the money to renovate and don't know how much it would cost to install a bath just yet.

What's your thoughts?

I would much prefer a good walk in shower than a bath. I haven’t had a bath for about 10 years.

But it was better when the kids were small.

badatcrochet1996 · 03/08/2021 16:43

I don't have a baby and still wouldn't buy a house without a bath.

Only exception would be if the bathroom needed to be ripped out anyway and there was enough space for a bath, then I'd buy it as it wouldn't make a difference.

I love a bath and if I had a choice, wouldn't live without one!

CambsAlways · 03/08/2021 19:37

No I wouldn’t consider buying a house without a bath, although if there was room to have one installed that’s different and I liked everything about the house, but we would make it first priority to put one in

Suzi888 · 03/08/2021 19:41

No I wouldn’t. I love my bath and shower equally.

DGFB · 03/08/2021 20:21

I personally find it far easier to bath small children together in the bath, especially for hair washing. So yes I’d buy a house without one but I’d want to put one in ASAP

With two DC under 6 including one with SEN who refuses to go in the shower, I wouldn't be able to.

It wouldnt bother me now and when my DS was small he would scream blue murder going in the bath so he stood the entire time.

It is relatively cheap to put a bath in.

NeverSurrender · 03/08/2021 22:31

We did, it was a newly renovated bathroom but the plumber managed to move the toilet and put a bath in and keep the shower. Only a couple of holes in the tiles which are barely noticeable with a bit of filler. We tried to make do with the shower but sometimes only a bath will do to soak the mud/ paint/ pen etc off a toddler!

DappledThings · 03/08/2021 22:37

Nope, would be a deal breaker for me.

BrilliantBetty · 03/08/2021 22:37

No, not unless there was a very easy/obvious space available to put a bath.

We looked at and liked one house, but putting a bath in would have meant having to take out the whole bathroom, change where the doorway was and extend the room in to the hall by about 1.5 feet and then put it all back together in a new layout with new bath. A pain in the ass. We offered a lower price, having calculated how much all of this would cost. They actually accepted! But there were some other issues so it didn't go ahead and I was pleased in the end as didn't really want the hassle.

RandomMess · 03/08/2021 22:40

We did just had a large baby bath in the shower cubicle. They still fitted in it at 6 and they were tall for their age.

lannistunut · 03/08/2021 22:43

I am buying a house that only has showers, but checked carefully a bath could be fitted because I would be worried a buyer who really wanted a bath would be put off it they couldn't fit one in.

LittleFroggie · 03/08/2021 22:44

We did! Then installed a bath and it only cost around £600. We did it because we have young children otherwise I wouldn’t have bothered as never use it myself.

AlmostSummer21 · 03/08/2021 22:47

Yes, especially if there was a lovely big shower!!

MrsClatterbuck · 03/08/2021 22:49

@LidoLady

I'm really interested to read everyone's replies as I have a bath that is never ever used and am contemplating removing it and putting in a big shower that would get used. I'm just nervous that 2 shower rooms and no bath may slow down selling the house if we decide to move on. I'm very tempted to just do it though as I think life is for living in our house as we want it to be.
When we sold our house I was a bit worried as we had renovated the bathroom and taken out the bath and put in a bigger shower. When doing a loft conversion the ensuite had a large shower so no baths in our house. When selling it actually went very quickly. There was room to put a bath in the ensuite and still have the shower.
sarahc336 · 03/08/2021 22:49

Now I have small children I'd say I'd either need a bath or space to put one in. Once my children are older a bath wouldn't bother me as a shower is all I ever have. X

HandlebarLadyTash · 03/08/2021 22:59

Showers fine for us, I would be happy buying a house without a bath

carcarbinks · 03/08/2021 23:01

No

Kite22 · 03/08/2021 23:18

I wouldn't, unless the house was cheap enough to allow for a bathroom refit plus compensation for having to go to the hassle of that work after I'd gone through the stress of the whole buying and selling process.

With a little one, and plans to have more dc, that would be even more important.

WelshWhisky · 03/08/2021 23:23

I wouldn’t. I shower every morning but I love a soak in the bath one evening a week.

You have young DC? Nope. I wouldn’t OP. You are sure to find something more suitable. Good Luck 💐

Livingintheclouds · 03/08/2021 23:34

My daughter is 16 and there is a bath in the family bathroom but not her loft en suite. We are putting one iin as she prefers baths. And the showers are all waterfall type which I hate so changing them too.
So I Would buy only if I could put a bath in.

PickAChew · 03/08/2021 23:35

Only if it could be fixed tomorrow!

Maggiesfarm · 04/08/2021 04:20

I would if the house was marvellous in all other respects. It is nice to have a bath, maybe you can have one installed. We used to have a corner bath with a shower over it.

saleorbouy · 04/08/2021 04:39

If there is space for a bath then installation is very straight forward as you will already have all the plumbing required insitu, H&C water and a waste drain.
It shouldn't be more than a couple of days work for a reasonable tradesman.

HungryHippo11 · 04/08/2021 05:47

If everything else about the house was good, this wouldn't be a dealbreaker for me.
