Would you buy a house without a bath?

Me and DH are buying our first property. We have come across a house for a really decent price and although we haven't viewed it yet, one thing is seriously putting me off... it doesn't have a bath, only a shower.

We have one child but would like 1 more in the near future. The house we live in currently has a bath and a separate cubicle shower so bathing DS hasn't been an issue. Baby bath in the big bath, then bath seat in the bath and now just a non slip mat in the bath.

My question is, if you were in my situation, would you buy a house without a bath?

We don't have the money to renovate and don't know how much it would cost to install a bath just yet.

What's your thoughts?

If there was no space for a bath then 100% no. If there was space to put one in then maybe but it would definitely put me off, especially if the bathroom was otherwise nice and didn’t need redoing.

readytosell · 03/08/2021 10:17

I would, but then there is only myself to think about and I never use a bath. Completely depends on your circumstances.

Angel2702 · 03/08/2021 10:32

No not unless there was an easy way to install one quickly, but then we don’t have a shower only a bath.

girlmama32 · 03/08/2021 10:40

It probably wouldn't put me off, my one year old will happily shower instead of a bath and for future children you can just stick a baby bath in the shower

emmathedilemma · 03/08/2021 10:45

I wouldn't unless there was space to put a bath in.

SupermanWithTheGreyHair · 03/08/2021 10:47

Yes. We’ve got rid of the baths in our bathrooms. Some people said we were mad, but when asked when they last had a bath, they said, point taken. I think lots of people have baths they don’t use.

RightOnTheEdge · 03/08/2021 10:51

Only if there was space to put a bath in.
I like showers and baths depending on my mood. My children love a nice bubble bath.

YanTanTethera123 · 03/08/2021 11:02

No, only if I could reinstall a bath.

mafted · 03/08/2021 11:08

Yes. We got rid of ours.

Bluntness100 · 03/08/2021 11:11

Happily, I prefer showers.

FurierTransform · 03/08/2021 11:15

I'd only consider on the basis i'd be able/willing to add a bath.

BluebellsGreenbells · 03/08/2021 11:19

Personally I’d think it was easier to stand under a shower with a toddler or child rather than have to faff about with filling a bath and then all the mess and splashing, but I appear to be in the minority

But it’s more than getting kids clean - they love to play in the bath, it cools them down on a warm day, it can kill an hour easily! Give mum some peace even if she’s sat on the toilet!!

GlamGiraffe · 03/08/2021 11:20

No. Absolutley not

Lockdownbear · 03/08/2021 11:26

As long as there's space to re-install a bath I wouldn't mind but that would reflect in my offer.

I actually don't get why people get rid of baths, there is always the odd day when an adult has an injury that is helped by a soak in a bath.

Not to mention washing kids, too big for a baby bath, but impossible to wash in a shower.

ToffeeNotCoffee · 03/08/2021 11:29

Granted, I shower every day but can't remember when I last had a bath.

However, I need to know the bath is there when I need it i.e. if I pull a muscle and want a long soak or I just feel like having a bath with nice bubble bath etc.

yikesanotherbooboo · 03/08/2021 11:36

I would buy it but plan to put on a bath when money allowed. Babies can easily be bathed in sinks and can be showered as they get a bit bigger . The bath is nice for relaxation though.

missbunnyrabbit · 03/08/2021 12:06

No way. Love baths.

blobby10 · 03/08/2021 12:10

I did - the house had been owned by an elderly couple who had installed a shower cubicle and bidet instead of the bath. I put the bath back once I moved in as a) I like a bath now and again b) estate agent said that it would help if I ever wanted to sell the house on as its in a really good catchment area. Cost me £7k to renovate the bathroom which was more than I expected - I didn't go for the most expensive of everything but I guess its a decent sized room.

lynsey91 · 03/08/2021 12:21

Me and DH did. Our house has a small shower cubicle but we are about to change it for a large walk in shower.

Baths are a waste of time and water. I think the last time I had one was about 25 years ago.

I know most parents with young children like a bath but parents in other countries that don't have baths seem to manage

sourdoughnut · 03/08/2021 15:25

We had some money knocked off of the asking price as they had no bath. First thing we did when we moved in was have a bath installed. I think it cost us about 3 grand

Comefromaway · 03/08/2021 15:44

Now that dd has left home I would. When the children were little, not a chance.

Dd is training to be a professional dancer so still had baths to relax tired muscles until recently. Very occasionally ds will have a bath just to relax when he is stressed.

HereWeGoAgain24 · 03/08/2021 15:48

Thanks everyone! Mixed responses but I think I definitely would consider it even though I have very young DC.

Someone's beaten it to us anyway! The housing market is so competitive at the moment and they've accepted an offer today, it was only listed 5 days ago.

I'm really interested to read everyone's replies as I have a bath that is never ever used and am contemplating removing it and putting in a big shower that would get used. I'm just nervous that 2 shower rooms and no bath may slow down selling the house if we decide to move on. I'm very tempted to just do it though as I think life is for living in our house as we want it to be.

lawofdistraction · 03/08/2021 16:06

We offered on a house without a bath that went to best and finals today. It sold for 10K over asking price (not to us sadly!) We'd be happy without a bath in the right house.
