Anyone done big commute for dream home?

We (DH & 1 year old DC) have been looking at joining the London exodus, freed by the fact that we won’t need to be in the office everyday. But we’re quite late to the trend and so everything within an easy commute is already so expensive.

We’ve found what would be our dream house but it would mean 2.5 hours on the train each way. We’ll probably need to be in the office 2 days a week. We could work in the train so could be reasonably productive time. Train tickets would be very costly, but doable for the right home.

Has anyone done this? And was it a case of getting into new routines, or was it too exhausting to do long term?

I’m so tempted for the fantastic lifestyle we’d have, including being near family. But nervous of doing something we’d regret if it was a strain to do over time.

@AndAroundAgain good update and good to hear.

I tend to think that the problem with "dream" houses is that they don't really exist in the "real" world... and if they do it only works for a very privileged few.

It just won’t work, far too long a commute and that is assuming that there are no hiccups if the 5 hr round trip is on public transport. I wouldn’t even consider it personally.

2.5 hours is more than Leeds to Kings Cross, not including any commute either side of the station. The cost is horrendous.

You won't have your dream lifestyle with this commute as you will be exhausted. And it's tei days a week at the moment but what's to say as business needs change, this won't change either?

I did it 4 days a week pre children - up to 8.5 months pregnant. It was (suprisingly) fine when the trains were ok as I’m a morning person. I didnt claim train time as work time but got stuff planned and was able to avoid overtime. But train delays of 30-40 minutes seemed to happen weekly for a few months and were pretty soul destroying on a complex (bus/train/tube/tube) commute. I’m considering going back to it shortly but lobbying for 2 days a week with slightly longer hours on the work from home days.
