Tipping removal men

Is it usual to tip removal men? We're moving this week and DM has just 'reminded' me to get cash out to tip the removal men. We've paid actual costs in full in advance. Last time we move I think I got them a crate of beer/cider, but DM thinks I should be giving them cash. Is this right? If so, how much?

Yeah, there was 4 of them who packed us up, gave them £40.

Yep, did the last two times I moved. Gave the Gaffer £60 to split between the 3 of them as he saw fit. Gave them a six pack of beers and fed and watered them throughout the day (sandwiches, crisps, drinks, biscuits).

Yes, gave them £40 beyween three of them I think. I don't think they expect it, but it is a nice thing to do if they do a good job.

We tend to do £20 each, as well as snacks and drinks during the day.

Just stick it in an envelope and hand it to the lead guy as they're leaving.

We bought them all cases of beer and kept them in supply of tea (they didn't want anything else)

We did because they did some kind of magical space bending trick and got a sofa up a staircase that was physically too small to fit it. I've never seen anything like it.

Honestly, this one chap said 'everyone step away and let me think, it's not stuck as it's only touching 2 sides'. A few minutes later he was giving directions and up it went without a hitch while we all stood there open mouthed.

I'd only tip for better / harder / more complicated / friendlier work than you're expecting.

But I would feed them. Bacon sandwiches / pasties or something.

Growing up, it always seemed to be the norm. The times I have moved, we have done it too....yes to an envelope of cash given to the lead mover.

Yes, they get paid, although the ones who do most of the hard graft don’t get paid well. It’s usually a Friday and they’ve often worked into the evening, so that extra £20 just might pay for a round in the pub, if they like to do that before heading home.

When you’ve spend £x mega bucks in moving, an extra £100 seems worth it, to feel you’re finishing well. You’ll presumably be having a takeaway or similar that evening after your day of hard work....nice for the workers too.

But I always give a gift to the solicitor and the estate agent too....usually just biscuits or a bottle of wine. I’m of the view that when you receive a personalised service, small gestures of appreciation are due, beyond the standard payment.

Interesting responses - couple say no, but most seem to give something in cash. I think I'll have to get some cash out to go with the crate of beer! @WombatChocolate you're right that we'll have a takeaway that evening, and I've also ordered a £90 hamper from JL for our solicitor who has been fantastic (and prioritised making sure it gets through before SDLT deadline). I normally give our EA a gift too but this time he has been awful so I'm not on principle.

We did. We gave £50. The company we used get really booked up. In my mind, if we or a family member moved again they'd prioritise us.
It might be wishful thinking but they moved a 4 bed house by 3pm with all furniture reassembled. They were amazing

We always tip the removals men with cash and beer to take with them if they've done a good job.

The last move we had was a really tough stressful one. We had two trucks for a two day load, two day journey and then two day unload. So they stayed with us when we all got to the new house! They slept outside in their cabs but had BBQs for tea and showers indoors etc and I even took some of them to the shops to buy food and beer so they didn't have to take a truck. We got to know them quite well over the week and to be fair they handled every single thing we owned with such care and respect. We tipped them but also wrote to their boss saying how excellent they were.

Yes £10 each

I used the same company twice in 6 months. Same 3 lads both times. I bought them breakfast and gave them £20 for lunch.

I gave mine all my wine (not high end stuff, but there was an unopebottle if port). They seemed happy with that. They will be moving me much further out of storage eventually, so will give them cash tip then.

We moved a few months ago and the guys went above and beyond, they dismantled and rebuilt my sofa and plumbed in the washing machine! I was very grateful and I think I gave them £50.

We also got some personalised cakes made for our estate agents as they were so helpful and friendly but didn’t get anything for the solicitors who just did their job and no more.

I’ll always tip if someone goes out of their way to give better service or be extra helpful.

£40 for four men

Didn't occur to me to tip ours. It cost us over £2k via a big company and I'd hope at that price they were paid a fair wage!

We did feed them cake and bring lots tea/coffee, but no we didn't tip them. Was an eye wateringly expensive luxury as it was 🤷‍♀️

For our last move it was £20 each and a bottle of booze of their choice.
