Tipping removal men

37 replies

Is it usual to tip removal men? We're moving this week and DM has just 'reminded' me to get cash out to tip the removal men. We've paid actual costs in full in advance. Last time we move I think I got them a crate of beer/cider, but DM thinks I should be giving them cash. Is this right? If so, how much?

I dunno. I guess it would be nice if we tipped everyone doing really hard, labour-intensive work for crap pay.
But just because we can't, and don't, doesn't mean we shouldn't tip anyone IMO.

We gave them £50 each, think there was 4 of them and got them sausage rolls and cans of coke from greggs.

Just moved, didn't tip as I paid £1500 and was then charged an extra £200 because they had to wait till 3pm for us to complete. I would have tipped but felt the additional £200 should cover it.

We had a removals company in, 3 men. No tea/coffee on the day as we had packed the kettle, but we gave them ice-creams at lunchtime (they bought their own lunch) some beers at the end, and £60 cash to split up how they chose. They worked very hard for it on a very hot day.

Shelddd · 12/06/2021 21:45

I have tipped 20 each time but I don't have much stuff so it's usually just s couple hours to half a day. If it was a full day I'd probably tip 40 each.

I don't feel like I have to and I wouldn't tip at all if I thought they did a bad job but thankfully that has never happened.

I always offer water, but haven't provided food or anything else as I've never had one gone beyond half a day.

Lockdowndramaqueen · 12/06/2021 23:53

We did - 10% in cash. They were very grateful. They did work very hard for it though - we have a lot of books 🤣

@Dinosauraddict

Interesting responses - couple say no, but most seem to give something in cash. I think I'll have to get some cash out to go with the crate of beer! *@WombatChocolate* you're right that we'll have a takeaway that evening, and I've also ordered a £90 hamper from JL for our solicitor who has been fantastic (and prioritised making sure it gets through before SDLT deadline). I normally give our EA a gift too but this time he has been awful so I'm not on principle.
Your EA should get you a gift, he’s made money off you. No way would I get them a gift, probably why I’m surrounded by people who are friends now with the EA and I am not 😂

£20 each to 3 of them in cash.

alexdgr8 · 13/06/2021 00:04

@OldTinHat

I didn't. Didn't even cross my mind!
really ? why would you not ? i suggest £50 between them. the alcohol may not suit everyone, some people don't/can't drink it.

@Farenth my dh can do the space bending furniture trick as well - he was a mover for a year in his youth. It's amazing to see when it works (though I have been jammed against doorways quite a lot as well!)

We always tip ten quid each, give to each guy in their hand in case there is some fiddle by the main guy. Usually it's the youngsters that do the real back breaking lifting!

HeartShapedBalloon · 13/06/2021 05:56

We gave ours £20 each, 3 men. They quoted way cheaper than another company who let us down, fitted us in at short notice, and did a fantastic job of moving everything (even insisting we didn't need to empty drawers of clothes....they moved them all full!). Everything was put in the exact room we needed it to go to. And they didn't damage a single thing!
