Garage conversion: exposed trusses!

Hi there! We have left the trusses exposed in our garage conversion. See attached. This is still work in progress but shall we paint white (so it blends with the ceilings etc when we get there) or does would you just stain and leave? Thoughts please?

Lovely. I’d paint them black personally

Livingintheclouds · 27/05/2021 20:39

Paint white.

fabricstash · 27/05/2021 20:46

Stain them don’t paint them dark grey and not white. The 2 whites will probably look a bit odd

Waitforwhat · 27/05/2021 21:09

White can look nice but thinking it will be a nightmare to clean/dust! 🙈 attaching an example...leaning more towards stained look! But we have so many that I am just not sure if it will look nice 🤔

And some hanging chairs? The dream! 🤣 but are the trusses strong enough to take this?

I would give them a good sand and stain them

Nice btw!

pussycatlickinglollyices · 28/05/2021 16:35

Sand and stain...and get a cat 😻

PresentingPercy · 28/05/2021 16:38

Mine are painted a pale grey and the room is white. Not as many as you have though. Sack the structural engineer! Stain, once done, is impossible to remove. Paint is kinder and way more modern.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 28/05/2021 16:53

I wouldn't stain them, they look fine as they are. I would just use a satin 'varnish' to seal them.
Rather than getting a cat, get a monkey it would love swinging about in there! 🐒

PresentingPercy · 28/05/2021 17:44

Varnish does not cover up dust. It is the same dust! It is more a case of what looks modern and what looks dated. I went to Daylesford Organic and saws their painted ones in the restaurant. Definitely moved me on to paint.

Waitforwhat · 28/05/2021 18:09

Ok! I am going to get the builder to paint one and stain an other so I can decide. But yes, we have so many paint might give a more modern/open look! And yes, we do have a cat! 😬🤣

@presentingpercy

Ok, but what about the monkey?

PresentingPercy · 28/05/2021 21:12

Here’s Daylesford.

@presentingpercy

Yes that's all very well but what about the f**king monkey?

PresentingPercy · 29/05/2021 20:22

We have a three toed sloth hanging in there!

It was built as a garage, which is only now being converted into habitable space. I don't think whoever designed it cared what it looked like!
bumbledeedum · 29/05/2021 22:30

@Waitforwhat I'm absolutely useless with designs so won't offer an opinion on the colours but would you mind if I asked roughly how much the conversion has cost? We're thinking about converting the garage in the house we're buying at the moment but have been given all sorts of rough estimates from various people.

Mitchellernie · 29/05/2021 22:50

Paint them white / whatever colour the ceiling is going to be. Looks lovely.

Waitforwhat · 29/05/2021 22:51

@bumbledeedum we are paying about £10k but then we’re in south east (velux windows and the vaulted ceiling has pushed the price up a bit). I hope this helps!

bumbledeedum · 29/05/2021 22:54

@Waitforwhat yes thank you, that's really helpful!! Looks like it's going to look fab when it's all done as well :-)

PresentingPercy · 29/05/2021 23:34

Ours was a garage storage loft but we raised the roof! Was a very expensive job but it’s now a flat with kitchen and bathroom etc.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 30/05/2021 04:35

@waitforwhat
If you've not already done it I would suggest remotely controlled opening, and external shutter or internal blinds on the velux.

Waitforwhat · 30/05/2021 09:37

@TwoLeftSocksWithHoles, my thinking didn’t go beyond the paint so thanks for the advise! :)

Paint white.

wonkylegs · 30/05/2021 10:00

My studio (currently being built) has exposed trusses like this they are going to be painted white inside to match the ceiling and black on the overhanging patio roof to match the windows.
