imitation devol kitchen

There was a brilliant old thread with ideas about how to create a devol type kitchen on a budget. Would anyone like to discuss this again with current ideas/suppliers??

I dont have any ideas -yet - but im definately watching!

BinocularVision · 27/05/2021 17:50

No ideas, sorry, but would be interested in responses.

hobbyhearse · 27/05/2021 18:01

I remember the thread, wonder what it was called. I'd be interested too but not quite at the kitchen planning stage yet

TangoWhiskyAlphaTango · 27/05/2021 18:14

I don't know the old thread but I am doing a renovation at the moment. DeVol would be my dream but alas not my budget. After a shit ton of research I found a company in the West Midlands (Walsall) that do virtually the same carcass except it's made from pine. They deliver nationwide too and they will paint it any F&B colour you like. They aren't well known and their website isn't anything to fawn over either but with the right worktops I think it'll come pretty close.

I'm having mine in Cornforth White with quartz I think. They'll do any size you like, only downside is a 20 week lead time 😭

Ooo I just wish I could afford a deVOL kitchen! I’ll be following this thread with interest!

Sweetmelody72 · 27/05/2021 20:06

Ooh thanks for the heads up @TangoWhiskyAlphaTango. I know Willenhall well (but not Furniture Nation) as my husband is from Walsall. Also, some time back I was looking into a similar business in the East Midlands. Pineland I think they’re called.
I cannot work out from the website whether the interiors get fully painted or whether you are left with raw pine, which is very knotty. Also, what do the drawer boxes look like? Are they dovetailed? I love that look.
You didn’t mention cost but they look good value on a per cabinet basis, although I’ve been looking at whole kitchen costs for comparison.

Do you know I did not even ask about the drawers! To be fair it would not be a deal breaker for me as I could only afford a DIY.com / Ikea kitchen price (had diy.com before in my old kitchen and nothing wrong with it but it was not solid wood or inframe).

To be honest when I put the deposit down it was during lockdown and so I could not get to the showroom to see. I am on a tight schedule of needing to move in on a certain date so needed to order asap with such a long lead time. I know they paint all of the insides except the very back panel, I may paint mine but then with stuff in the way will I notice it? I was assured that I will not see the knots as the wood is treated with a special undercoat / primer prior to painting.

I think cost wise I compared to DeVol and its was well under half. For 16 ft kitchen which I am running in one straight run including two tall double larders and a 900mm pan drawer I am paying £3k (just for units though). This includes the cornice for the larders too. I did lots of research into various companies and could not find any to compare the price with solid wood / bespoke / painted to order. Their gallery is not great but with vision it will come very close.

Sweetmelody72 · 27/05/2021 21:36

@TangoWhiskyAlphaTango did you look at Handmade Kitchens of Christchurch? They were the front runners for me along with DIY but £3k does seem good value, on the face of it.

I’ve looked closely at the gallery and the yellow kitchen is just spot on. I think there was a lovely black/grey one too. The lead time might be difficult to work around but if we plan well, it might be doable.

TangoWhiskyAlphaTango · 28/05/2021 06:18

@sweetmelody72 I did look at them but I do not like the idea of having to paint / getting somebody into paint it after fitting, Furniture nation were also cheaper plus solid wood instead of some parts solid / MDF / veneered. I used DIY in my last house and absolutely nothing wrong with it but its not the same as DeVol and that is what I am really trying to achieve (albeit much cheaper!). DeVol have fab marketing with their gorgeous showroom / IG page to drool but I do think this kitchen will look pretty much the same.

The yellow kitchen is lovely and i think shows how it could be with a modern touch. The owner actually has an Instagram page and I sent her a DM asking her if she was happy with the kitchen (quality / service etc) and yes she was, could not recommend highly enough. I cannot find her page now to link it but it made me feel more confident.

I think overall with budget constraints for a solid, painted kitchen it will be the best I could find for the price. I will post some photos once its done but thats not until August sadly!

Sweetmelody72 · 28/05/2021 07:18

That was some serious super-sleuthing @TangoWhiskyAlphaTango. If you do find the IG page again, please do come back and share it.

I’m definitely after a classic rather than a country look so it’s good to know that it is achievable.
Thanks so much for letting me know about your experience. Good luck with your project!

Honeybee2021 · 28/05/2021 08:42

What is the cost of average devol kitchen?

Sweetmelody72 · 28/05/2021 08:57

I think I read somewhere once they start from £20-25k? Don’t quote me but you could probably find this on their website.

@TangoWhiskyAlphaTango I had cornforth white in my last kitchen. Lovely warm grey

Mumblechum0 · 28/05/2021 08:58

Bookmarking! We’re probably going for deVol (have a visit planned to their Leics showroom next month) but I also have a cabinet maker coming round next week, as if I can get really good copies made for less, I will.
Budget..... without getting a quote I don’t know but I have a vague figure of somewhere between £40k and £60k.

Not a big kitchen but awkwardly shaped and I want a window seat which is why I’m going for bespoke.

DeVol marketing is so good, hope the reality is up to the hype

GyozaPoser · 28/05/2021 09:05

Herringbone kitchens might worth getting a quote from. I'd be worried about pine warping and not keeping its shape especially with an in-frame design. I think I'd be more inclined to go with an MDF carcass and a hardwood front.

Wow 40-60k for a kitchen? I'm sure you'll be able to get what you like for that no imitation needed. I'm not sure I'd pay it even if I had the money (not being snarky I promise) because aren't you paying a premium for the hype? Be interesting to visit the showroom I'm sure I'd die with envy!

I’ve seen their kitchens online before - gorgeous! Any idea of cost?
Mumblechum0 · 28/05/2021 10:29

@TangoWhiskyAlphaTango, quite possibly I am falling for the hype 😂
I’ve put up with current kitchen for 22 years (tho it’s had a few facelifts in that time), and we’ll be here for the rest of our lives so to me, I don’t mind paying a chunk of money for something I really like 😊

Mumblechum0 · 28/05/2021 11:08

This thread reminded me to phone up DeVol's leics. showroom to ask for another copy of the brochure (I've been tearing bits out of mine), and there was a peacock shrieking in the background.

Wonder if they actually have a call centre in Slough with a peacock sound effects button Grin

GyozaPoser · 28/05/2021 12:32

@Sweetmelody72 I don't but they do an off the peg range now that will be more affordable

Ozanj · 28/05/2021 16:04

There are many bespoke kitchen fitters in leicestershire and northamptonshire that have done very well imitating Devol. I won’t mention names but if you Google them they are all on page 1.

Unprecedentedusername · 28/05/2021 17:10

We had our kitchen and extension drawn up by our interior designers. Happy with the design we asked devol to quote for the cabinetry. They wouldn’t give us a quote unless their designer had designed the kitchen. We had our cabinets made locally and to a better standard for less.

Barnabyted · 28/05/2021 19:10

I concur about there being some very good cabinet makers in the Leicester and Northampton area. I’m having an Alexander Lewis kitchen (Market Harborough) when I replace mine (and can afford it). I love De Vol kitchens but all the kitchens I’ve drooled over on Right Move have been from Alexander Lewis.

depressedor · 29/05/2021 11:21

@Ozanj what do i google to find them please?
